  • "The Conqueror Worm" is a haunting poem by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1843. Set within a metaphorical theater, the poem presents a nightmarish play performed by "mimes" who embody humanity, manipulated by unseen forces and ultimately devoured by the grotesque figure of the Conqueror Worm. It serves as a stark meditation on the futility of human existence, the inevitability of death, and the relentless march of decay that spares no one. Poe's vivid imagery and dramatic narrative style paint a bleak but captivating portrait of life's tragic theater, where all are mere puppets dancing to the whims of a greater, unseen script.
In our dark jazz adaptation, brought to life with the help of AI, we dive into the depths of Poe’s gothic vision, blending the poem’s themes of cosmic despair and inevitable doom with a smoky, jazz-infused soundtrack. This rendition captures the essence of a cabaret in the shadows, where eerie piano notes, haunting brass, and a slow, sultry rhythm evoke the sinister elegance of the Conqueror Worm's creeping presence. By fusing the dark cabaret atmosphere with elements of jazz, we aim to underscore the poem’s timeless themes with a fresh yet faithful musical interpretation.
Using AI, we've crafted a soundscape that not only honors Poe's original work but reimagines it through a modern lens-bringing together the ethereal, the macabre, and the irresistibly haunting tones of dark jazz. This collaboration between art and technology allows the poem to echo anew, resonating through a jazz club of the mind, where shadows dance, and the Conqueror Worm waits in the wings. Welcome to a new rendition of Poe’s eternal tragedy, where the stage is set for a performance that lingers long after the final note fades.

Hi, is everything made by ai? The composition, the instruments, the mixing, the voices?
    What software do you use?
    This is really impressive.

Hi, and thank you! Yes, every aspect of the music is made by AI. For this particular song, I used three tools: Suno (suno.com/), Udio (www.udio.com/), and Audacity (www.audacityteam.org/).
Suno and Udio are AI music generation tools that serve different needs in music production. Suno is designed for quick and catchy compositions, making it easy to create songs with minimal effort, though it lacks in sound quality. Udio, on the other hand, focuses on sound quality and detailed compositions, offering clean, artifact-free audio, but it may lack the same level of creativity.
For this song, I first created a track using Suno, then uploaded it into Udio to remix it. The Suno track served as a model for Udio to build upon. Since Udio can only remix up to 2 minutes and 10 seconds at a time, I extended the rest of the song in 32-second chunks. Afterward, I used Audacity, a free audio editing and recording app, to make adjustments. I mixed two separate versions of the song I created with Udio in Audacity, which resulted in the final song.

Was excited to hear this, rather disgusted by the use of ai. How ironic to use his beautiful poem with the use of ai.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We understand your concerns. Our goal is to explore new ways to bring classic poetry to life, and we see AI as a tool that helps us creatively reinterpret these works, not replace the original beauty of the poems. We appreciate your perspective and hope you continue to enjoy the timeless words of the poets themselves.
