I crave for a friendship like this. Now at 37 I lost count of "friends" that "grows" out of gaming. I'm married with a family and a busy construction job and there's always time for gaming. Not as much as before but you get the picture. People think they're growing up but really they just watch more tv lol!
I have a grand total of two good friends that I've known since high school/before. A couple of other acquaintances that I see from time to time, but most of the others are pretty much just out of my life lol.
Hey Jon, I guess back then you couldn't have imagined that today you would touch so many hearts, and that you would have a community that spans the globe!!
Johnny's episodes with guests are the best. Whether it's old friends like Andrew or RobMan, Kim's visits or possibly best Johnny interviews another TH-camr (like Game Sack or SuperDerek) they're always such excellent episodes and a major part is how Johnny brings out the fun in anyone who comes on the show.
Early 2000s I was so broke and needed to pay rent. So on eBay I ended up selling my Genesis, sega cd model 2, popful mail, and both lunar games on sega cd for $100 on eBay. 😩
Lunar silver star story is one of my favorite games of all time. The PS1 version I felt made it even better and oh those cutscenes back then. Great game!!
Hi I've had a very similar experience. I sold my Neo Geo console and games including Samurai Showdown 2 to buy a 3DO console just to own super Street fighter 2 X. It still pains me 25 years later .Love all your videos keep up the good work 🙂.
I had the opposite experience. In the late '90s, I worked at FuncoLand, and with a couple of friends that worked with me, I convinced them to buy Saturns and pretty much all of the good stuff. With one of them, I took one of the price lists and just circled everything I thought was worth buying. We all ended up buying Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Magic Knight Rayearth, Legend of Oasis, Albert Odyssey, Shining Force III, Shining Wisdom, Shining the Holy Ark, Burning Rangers, Guardian Heroes, Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men, Street Fighter Alpha 2... we were all buying these games when most cost about $20, and we all still have them. To this day, more than 20 years later, of I told either of those guys that something was a must, they'd probably just buy it sight unseen. It gave me credibility that I probably don't deserve!
@@timsohn7057 Thanks! I miss those days of hunting stuff down and calling friends with stuff they were looking for... it was a really carefree time. Those FuncoLand days were about as much fun as a person could have at work!
sometimes when I'm short on cash and see how crazy retro game prices are nowadays, I get the itch to sell my collection. I don't think I'll ever do it though. money comes and goes, but I have a lot of love for my old games and the memories I have with them!
Thankfully I’ve never had a bad video game trade, but your story reminded me of a bad Yu-Gi-Oh trade. I had a childhood friend who was more knowledgeable about cards and their rarity, and he convinced me to trade something like my Pot of Greed for whatever. Some time later, I didn’t regret the trade so much as I was disappointed in him knowingly taking advantage of my ignorance.
My older brothers did the same thing when I was young to get the OG Sega CD. Sold our NES and all the games for it like FF and some of our SNES games. I don't have the games they got any more but I do still have the system and all those Working Design RPGs for it.
We've all been there. I'm 48 y/o and I recall selling my Genesis system and games to get a SNES. It was a good switch, but after about 6 mos, I wished I would have kept it and just saved up for the SNES. I missed Sonic, Gaiares, MUSHA, etc. You live and learn, and it was a great life lesson... appreciate what you have.
It’s so sad, I went through childhood also starting to trade in all my games to get N64 games and PS1 games when I was right at the age where I was in middle school starting high school and not quite old enough to have a job. One of my biggest regrets in life, my father was a doctor and my mom a stay at home mom that would game hunt for me so I had a huge collection of NES and SNES games. Sucks. I did get to play some awesome PS1 and N64 games though as a small consolation.
I have sold my collection several times over the years to get new consoles. It’s a pretty bad feeling thinking out the hundreds of games I’ve traded in.
I freakin love you got Ghaleon just kinda hanging out in the thumbnail.😂 Watching your video's have brought so much nostalgia flooding in it's crazy...I remember getting Lunar silver star story complete on ps1. I went to a little shop and traded the owner 5 of my rarest Yu-Gi-Oh cards for it. Freaking amazing game as was the second one. But it's funny cause I have the leather back game book for lunar sitting 2 ft in front of me.
In my early 20's in the late 2000's, I sold my entire game collection as well. My biggest regret was selling my Gameboy collection, to this day I still haven't been able to get a fraction of my games back.
Guys both of you are speaking to me bringing back horrible memories lol. I traded in at a flea market, all of my super Nintendo Sega stuff for PlayStation 1 and N64 stuff. I'm slowly getting back all of my games that I had from that era at double or triple the price lol.
I'm so glad I always knew better than to sell off or trade in stuff. My brother always wanted to and I always stopped him, except for two particular games. He ended up selling Pokemon Colosseum and Gale Of Darkness. God, that was foolish. I'm glad I resisted the rest though.
I didn't collect console games, but I had a fairly large collection of PC computer games (roughly 200) when I moved out of my parents house. The girlfriend I was living with cheated on me and I moved out because she was the primary on the lease. I forgot my computer games which were in the storage section of the apartment. She sold all of them. I have managed to buy a lot of them back now, but I had signed boxes of sierra games that I have never gotten the slip covers re-signed. Still hurts to this day 24 years later.
The Japanese version of Space Megaforce, (Super Aleste) can be had for $62.99 on eBay. The Japanese version also has additional content over the US and european versions.
I haven't got rid of my entire collection but I do remember trading in quite a lot of PS2 games in order to buy new games which I do regret but I'm fortunate I've re-bought a few of them back. Good to see Andrew back. Great video Johnny! :)
When I was a teen, I've been preserving my PS1 collection of games, my mom thought that I don't need those games anymore so she ordered me to throw them all. Some of them were very rare games because they had been pirated, but the art work on the cases were actually amazing, like in MGS1. So I just did what I was told, I threw all 118 PS1 games to the trash, to this day it still stings a bit. But on the flip side I managed to get a rare downloaded PS1 case art digitally, and I remember most of the games I loved, that's close to 95 games, I guess some of them I didn't played that much.
I eventually got a Sega CD in 2004 or 2005, I'd always wanted one and they weren't too expensive on Ebay at the time. I bought the console and a bunch of games for it, and ended up only really liking two of them lol. Can't imagine how I would of felt if I'd given up my entire game collection in the process.
After a series of getting caught sneaking out of the house, back when i was 13... My dad got so pissed and took a hammer to my entire game collection... Still feel that one today...
Lunar is in my top 5 games ever. Popped it in my ps1 bored looking through my older brothers collection he left behind for me when he joined military and I instantly got hooked. Played it start to finish in Aw. My favorite jrpg ever, an amazing story, music that’s stuck with me for years. Wish it’d make a return.
Andrew(nice to see you again), please don't underestimate how much we all love seeing and hearing about your stories/life. You're one of the best parts of this show. Equal to Robman, or Kim, or Satan. We love when you're on. Thanks for showing up, please make it far more frequent.
Well Jon, I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in selling all of your games for a new system. I'm just a few years younger than you and hearing your story took me back 20+ years. I sold all of my nintendo and super nintendo games along with the consoles to preorder the original xbox. I thought I was soooo smart. Talk about regrets. It took ages to rebuild my collection. Anyway, just had to share. You weren't the only one hehe. Great episode as always 😊😊👍
Nice to see you guys do a video together after a few years. I have to say that I sold my PSOne to buy LEGO. I wasn't and am not today terribly regretful over it as I did get a ton of playtime out of the LEGO, but looking back I wish I still had that PSOne.
It's what we all did back in the 80's 90's we has kids, teens young men would sell off our collections for the next "NEW THING" not best thing. I sold my nes, for genesis, genesis for ps1, ps1 for dreamcast... Then never again, i keep all. Last games I sold was prg2 which I played for 100 hours and was rank #! or 32 in the world, and tony hawk 3 which I played and beat 3 to 5 times over. Got them back for $4 or less at ebgames.
Nice episode. Good to see Andrew. 1st half of 90’s , stores for used games popped up here and there. I traded in ALL my classic NES games , one after the other , just to get the new games coming out. Today , I don’t like them and they’re not worth anything and I miss the old ones , but they cost a kidney , a retina and 17 pints of blood. If I could , I’d travel in time and kick myself. HARD !
Sold almost all of my GameCube items to get a Wii. Loved the Wii, but GameCube games meant the world to me. Happily, I rebought just about everything I wanted prior to the Covid price spike. John, you should do a follow up video to how you rebought a lot of games! For me, I really felt like I got my childhood back and put all of the missing pieces to a puzzle together.
No where even close to this level but I really regret whatever happened to my original GameCube box, I kept everything I got to do with games but that box must have got tossed somehow and it hurts even more because it's my favorite system
A neighbor of mine asked to borrow some ps1 games and ended up taking all of them which was weird to me but I thought okay as long as I get them back. Cut to him telling me his family sold them during a yard sell while he was asleep.. I didn't believe him and searched his house lol, of course I didn't find them and I still feel salty about it. I never let anyone borrow anything of mine again..
When I think about the games I've traded in over the years 😳 Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, all games I would love to have back in my collection but simply can't afford to buy again. Certainly not in the condition I had them in. I don't trade in games now and don't think I ever will again.
I feel that pain Andrew talked about, realizing within minutes that you've made a huge mistake ... back in the 90s I traded in my SNES and my small but awesome collection (Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy II, Chrono Trigger, Run Saber, FF Mystic Quest) as well as my Genesis with the lone game I had for it (Phantasy Star III) for a shiny new PlayStation and Battle Arena Toshinden. And I still had to come up with an extra $200. Learned my lesson though. From that moment on I vowed to never trade or sell off any game/system I love ever again and I've stuck to that over the past 27 or so years.
I sold my entire NES collection with console and ROB, for a loose copy of Night Trap! The game had just been banned and I thought I'd never get that controversial game...lo and behold it was soon re-released with the ESRB rating! I really regret giving up all my old NES games.
Yes I got rid of my entire Sega Saturn collection (including Panzer Dragoon Saga) to buy the Neo Geo CD, so I know how you feel and it still hurts to this day 😂
Yes, welcome back Andrew!!! I love it when Johnny goes into his storytelling mode from the yesteryears. I can't believe you made Andrew sell his collection! I think you'll need to do some Old Testament sacrifices to atone for this sin😄 As for what Andrew thought of Lunar, I have to agree with him, even back then when I would see it in magazines, I always thought the color was dark and off. We know Genesis color palette is weak but games like Sonic, Story of Thor, and the latest Fantasy Zone port show they can be bright with a pop. I actually had a JP Mega Drive and PC Engine back in high school and I used to go to Japan during the summer break as my dad lived there. I would pick up a bunch of used games in Akihabara (Softmap stores) and rental video/CD shops since they always sold used games. And when I would return the next summer, I'd sell the games to these shops for now looking back, an absurdly bad price. Oh man, I wish I still had those games now!!! So I can totally relate. I sold games like Ninja Spirit, Gunhed (Blazing Lazers), Bonk, Gaiares, Daimakaimura (Ghouls N Ghosts), and on and on. More PC Engine games b/c I didn't really have problems having access to play the Mega Drive since I could play the US Genesis games on it and I had friends with Genesis. Really kicking myself for this. Anyway I've always been curious about Lunar and now that I have a JP Mega Drive Mini 2, I will finally play it! And Johnny, you really do owe Andrew a lifetime supply of beer.
Back in 2005 I traded in a lot of amazing PS2 games for the OG Playstation Portable. The system was pretty sweet, but in hindsight, I really regret trading in a majority of my PS2 library for it. One game I wish I could have back is Def Jam FFNY.
I traded my entire PS1 collection which included almost every squaresoft title released in the US at a local video game store which also sold PC parts. All of these now rare titles to get a ATI Radeon 9500 Pro gpu back in late 2002 so I could play Morrowind. At the time I thought it was the right move seeing pixel shading on the water but as soon as my gpu became outdated less than a year, I realized how much of a terrible mistake I made.
No, I have never made a mistake like that. I did want to get the next best thing though. I remember the cheapest next thing was the Sega 32x. I wanted it because I thought more bits were better. I wanted a cheap way to get the bits that my parents would get. I got it, but didn't know how to hook it up or get the games to work properly. I think I have 3 or 4 games for it somewhere. Now I have it stored away somewhere.
I always wanted to play Lunar, but I could never find it! It was right around when I really discovered RPGs when I was young, I always saw ads for it in gaming magazines for ps1 but I could never find it in a store. Now the prices are 😰
I was sad today, but after watching this video about you guys playing game as childhood friends it reminded me of my friends back in the days doing the same thing……. Now I’m happy for those memories 😊
Back in April of '995, I bought Metal Warriors on the SNES thinking it would be as serious as Cybernator. Since it wasn't the internet era, I didn't know that I would find the music cartoonish and I absolutely hated the "pew pew" sound of the machine guns. I was 14, but I actually teared up a little because I was convinced that I had got the successor to Cybernator and it represented almost 2 weeks' worth of morning duty (I was a paperboy). I sold it 3 weeks later to a friend and lost about 18$ at that time. Today, I know I lost quite a lot more than that!! But it's OK, I would never get rid of my whole collection for one good game on the new console I'll just be able to wait for!!! We all make mistakes man!!! Look behind you, it cost you a lot more than what you sold back then!
Loved the friendship backstory, almost everyone had a gaming best friend, I had one and still is a best friend, we don’t play anymore but still stay in touch once in a while, now with online gaming you really don’t cultivate person to person gaming friendships everything is virtual, we had it good and didn’t realized it 👍
I sold my N64 and PS1 to buy a dreamcast. Couldn't even afford a game at the time but I rented sonic adventures and ready to rumble boxing. Didn't have a memory card so I left the game running until I beat it. After that I traded in the Dreamcast so I could get Diablo 2 on PC. After that, I had nothing but a single game. So glad I built my collection back up since then.
I always loved the sega cdx or as it was called in europe, the multimega. A friend of mine had this back in 1994 when we where about 6 years old and it cost about 1000DM in germany😅 years later in 2010, i bought one on ebay for just 100€ with a few games and i still have it to this day🙂
I sold all my top tier SNES RPGs for the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure at launch. Kept a couple gems (FFIII and Chrono Trigger), but Earthbound was part of the trade ins
When the GameCube came out I was pretty young and my neighbors who were older loved the GameCube but being poor I only had the N64 so they made me believe the N64 was for babies so I sold the N64 and about 40 games (all the big ones included ) at my neighbors garage sale for 20 bucks. To this day one of my biggest regrets

No where even close to this level but I really regret whatever happened to my original GameCube box, I kept everything I got to do with games but that box must have got tossed somehow and it hurts even more because it's my favorite system
I can't get used to him with new glasses after seeing his early episodes so many times 😂
Awesome story and I am glad Andrew is back.
Ouch!
Great show, good to have Andrew back.
love it - so real and heartwarming!
You both went down on that ship together!
My youngest boy just turned 1 today, me, him and my 5 year old are watching this and playing Mario on the switch, thanks for the video
This is why Super Derek says "hype responsibly"
Yes I got rid of my entire Sega Saturn collection (including Panzer Dragoon Saga) to buy the Neo Geo CD, so I know how you feel and it still hurts to this day 😂
Sometimes, good friends do bad things. Glad you two could clear the air! 🤣
Just one more year until we get the "I'm 50!" Episode 😏
Back in 2005 I traded in a lot of amazing PS2 games for the OG Playstation Portable. The system was pretty sweet, but in hindsight, I really regret trading in a majority of my PS2 library for it. One game I wish I could have back is Def Jam FFNY.
From the thumbnail I thought it was Clint from LGR! Lol, great video though! 👍
Lunar it’s still my favorite game to this day I wish they would release this for modern consuls
Loved the friendship backstory, almost everyone had a gaming best friend, I had one and still is a best friend, we don’t play anymore but still stay in touch once in a while, now with online gaming you really don’t cultivate person to person gaming friendships everything is virtual, we had it good and didn’t realized it 👍
Oh man, those Genesis and Sega Channel days are some of the best gaming days and memories.
Such a good story! Man I love this channel!
