It can be done, but you have to use a small saw guide and the remaining amount of steerer tube needs to be at least long enough for the saw guide to clamp on.

Not sure if I’m going off on a tangent, but when dropping the stem, necessarily that’ll result in reducing the space between the top of the knees and the torso, at the top of the pedal stroke (closing?) the hip angle to some extent. Countering clash of knees to torso in the more slammed position could be by a)reducing stem length? b)reducing crank arm length? c)reducing biscuits and gravy? As per Tarmac's user manual, a spacer bigger than 5 mm shall not be placed above the open stem cover. Is it because of the top cap bolt's length? And what are the risks of installing a spacer bigger than the recommended one? Thanks.
dont worry about it, as long as you tighten the pinch bolts on the stem to the right torque readings I have slammed my stem and rode with all the spacers on the top no worries at all
@@GCPerformance18 I tried this today and was wondering the same after noticing the comment in the Tarmac user manual... @@IPAColosseum On the safer side of things, ideally you want to clamp the reinforced section of the steerer tube. Yes it is, just remember to take note of the minimum insertion mark's distance from the edge of the seatpost, then make a new mark post-cut. If it's an uber-lightweight carbon seatpost like Darimo's, no. It has a designated clamping zone, so the carbon's thickness is only thicker in that zone.

Hey GC, with the original top cap and cover. do you need to use that specific top cap for the cover to clip in? Or is the top cap not involved with the integration of that plastic cover?
Yes, the stem cover clips into the top cap, but there's another version of the stem cover that has a hole up top, allowing you to use any top cap you fancy.
I got myself a brand new SL7 tarmac, when I got it I noticed that the wheel wasn't quite lined up with the bars, therefore I realigned it. Now when I turn the bars I can hear a hissing, I didn't thighten the bolts too much, the top one a bit tigheter than the pinch ones, pinch ones are just snug. No play in the headset.. Any suggestions or this is expected behavior? Bare in mind I haven't ridden the bike yet.
How low you can go before deciding on bar height because of the compression plug length? I assume you should not be riding with stem clamping carbon steerer below the compression plug.
Your fine. With specialized the steerer plug is deep as is but I mean as long as you don’t over tighten it there are no issues with it. I have done it to my bike and also customers bikes. There are no worries. It is thick there
The distance between the top edge of the stem and the edge of the steerer tube should be 3 - 5 mm. If your steerer tube plug has a flange that rests on top of the steerer tube when installed, take the flange's thickness into account too. The Specialized steerer tube compression plug's flange is a little over 1 mm thick, so I usually cut 4 mm below my first mark (the mark that's flush with the stem at the desired stem height), making the steerer tube 5 mm lower than the top edge of the stem. Once the plug is installed, it'd be about 3.5 mm.
I don't recommend do this without cutting short brake hose. because most BSA BB don't have a "cup" inside the frame. So if you just push down the stem, brake hose will be lowered too, and it's very likely that brake hose will touch the spindle of crankset, and rub it. I know this because it happens to my bike.
sooo, this is where the bottom bracket comes into play, shimnao and sram stock bb both have plastic sheeths covering them so there is not direct contact with a rotating spindle...... but if you use an aftermarket bb or maybe an installed wrong one then yes this is possible.... also the cable slack should be allowed mainly in the handlebar to hide excess

This is true
Next SL7 video to show us how to cut the steerer tube without take the fork off completely 😄
lmao I have done before but I dont think i want to show it because everyone would hate me for it, there is a lot of procise cutting lmao
Somebody who can tell me where i can buy the stem cover?
any specialized store can get it
At first when you said loosen the 4 front stem bolts, I was like "Huh"... lol, good catch though. Great content brother!
#RobbArmstrong
hahahha thank you!!! I hope you enjoy it
Yep helpful thnx
Cylindrical is less aero js
yes this is true but also being up super is less aero as well
i wish i have bike like that for my birthday this February 12 😔❤️
nope
My dude. If my mechanic were sitting on my top tube like that, I would be pissed
lmao, you dont like to share? but I mean I have been working on bikes for a long time, i dont have all my weight on there............it can take it, if it cant hold me kind of sitting on it how do you feel with your whole weight on the bike and hitting a pothole or a bump
@@GCPerformance18 If you’re saying you’re not completely sitting on the top tube then fair enough. And sitting on the saddle and sitting on the top tube are two different things. Your viewers would be ill served if they are to believe sitting on the top tube is ok
@@youngkim666 genuine question - why is it not ok? Just that I’ve sat on top tube for years when stopped briefly and I’m now curious about what damage I might be doing.
What’s nice about lowering my stem is it doesn’t require a how to video. #sl6
hahahha touche!!
i need those top cap desperately :(
It's already low as is, No need to get a back strain even more
lmao
the hoses are cnacked .... i'm sure his brakes doesn't work well anymore !!
always remove your handlebar and get help from a second person to hold the handlebar and always remove the bolt at the underside of the stem that holds the hoses
Hoses work perfect. Done this on more then 100 of these bikes. If you could only see the bend the cable has on the fork steerer. That’s the point of hydraulic brakes. It’s a fluid
Just lower... nvm, wrong video.
Hahahahaha got me good
don't hyper bend those cables.... kink city.
They are meant to go like that, that’s why they are hydraulic lines that can bend more then a normal cable and housing
Lowering the stem on a Tarmac SL7 does not require tools. Just ride the bike, the CF steerer will snap, and your stem will automatically lower. LOL 😆
Lmfao
What size diameter and thickness are those spacers?
How many spacers can I put on top of the stem? Because the manual says only 5 mm.
Thanks
thats what they recomened and yes for saftey issues yea, but I have seen full chimneys on there like full slammed with all stock spacers on top, and people have ran them for a while
Does the third big spacer (the one below the two you removed) breakaway?
yes all the tarmac sl7 spacers breakaway so it makes it easier to lower
@@GCPerformance18 awesome! Going to slam my stem tomorrow! Hopefully my back can take it haha!
