Abusing children is not a "weakness", it's a crime. I don't understand why when it comes to famous people, there are those who are like, "It should have remained a private matter. His/her children should have tried to understand them and be grateful". No one is stopping you from enjoying Joan Crawford's work, but acting as if her abusive behavior is just some minor flaw instead of seeing it for what it is baffles me.
Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were both fiercely independent and strong women in a predominantly male run industry where if you didn't play the game you were labeled as difficult or a bit*h. None of us knows what goes on behind closed doors and never will. She was an amazing actress who made many great movies.
Joan grew up with a lot of trauma which shaped who she became. She was determined to be the best and worked incredibly hard. I am sure there were issues w her but I try to look at her in a context of her background, her goals and the times in which she lived. I believe she struggled in life emotionally but she had a lot of positive characteristics. I think she really needed psychological help back then which is so much better today than in the 30s or 40s and 50s. They did not understand childhood neglect, abuse and how it impacts the brain and behavior like we do today.
yes! I don't think one negates the other but should be looked at in totality. All of us in life have many different sides which makes us who we are. I’m sure the truth of what happened lies somewhere in the middle of what Christina claims and what those closest to them witnessed. Great video! ❤
i feel that if you have multiple kids, each kid is going to look at their parents differently. each kid is going to be raised by a different parent even if they were raised by the same people, especially if there is huge age gap between the oldest and the youngest.
One of Steven Spielberg's first directing jobs was an episode of Rod Sterling's Night Gallery featuring Joan Crawford. Even in those many B movies she did, she gave her all. Speaking of Rod Sterling, I was yesterday years old when I found out he taught at Antioch College and lived in Yellowsprings for a time. This was after The Twilight Zone.
My grandfather told my dad a story about her. My grandfather was a backdrop painter for the studios back then, while he was working on the set, she went on a huge tirade cussing and screaming toward her trailer. Her assistant followed her in and for about 30 minutes she came out ready to do the scene with a smile. It was like a whole different person went in and another walked out.
And I guess you never had a bad moment or bad day in your life where you did the same thing? Joan Crawford was one of the most beloved stars in Hollywood. I am in my 70s and was from the Hollywood area born and raised for 40 years worked in the industry and I have my own friends and family and people that knew her and loved her, personally and professionally! She lived an extremely disciplined life and wanted her children to grow up with backbone and appreciation for what they had. Cynthia and Cathy were tremendously, respectful and loving to their mother, realizing who she really was, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, working hard alongside their mother in the home, and we’re joyous companions to Joan when she traveled, giving her love and happiness & truly cared about Joan, not bringing their mother grief and nightmares. Joan, herself physically worked so hard. Scrubbed her own floors on her own hands and knees in her home and brought a similar discipline with her when she was on set! Joan could’ve never achieved the stardom the love and respect she earned in that she always had if she’d been 1/10th the maniac MD depicts! She only had one lady, her loyal housekeeper, Mamacita for many, many years. Between the two of them, they did all the work!! I love & respect Joan probably more than I do any of the other well know celebrities for who she truly was, for all she did, and all she gave and for all the tremendous heart and brilliance she painstakingly brought to her dozens of memorable film performances, many we still treasure to this day, and I really appreciate Jordan doing such a respectful, lovely job sharing the highlights of Joan’s life & career within his post here today. Good one, Jordan! Christina C. has been proven to have written a book of fiction with Mommy Dearest. She should be ashamed of herself. Side note: At the 1969 Oscars I was in the stands with a high school friend. I spotted Joan Crawford coming down the red carpet and when she was in front of us I yelled, "I love you, Joan Crawford!" She stopped, looked into the crowd and made eye contact with me and said, "I love you too!" I was in heaven!
Um it hasn't been proved fiction. And in fact many of Joan's friends confirmed the abuse did happen. She was a very narcissist person who wanted complete control. She was a very damaged person.
I think her birth date is earlier, 1904, has been mentioned, she did appear in silent movies, she actually said in an interview she started to tread the boards at 14 through necessity,
They did, but Stanwyck was all career too and didn't know how to parent. She never said anything bad about the boy, just that there was bad blood between them.
I think leaving the two kids out of her will is a bit vindictive which would lead me to believe that there may be some truth that she may have mistreated the kids. But like you said we weren't there so we probably will never know for certain.
Seemed very narcissistic. A good example is temporarily replacing Christina on TV when Christina became hospitalized when ill. Christina's role was that of a young wife.
Lovely video! The Ed Sullivan Show was before my time, but he had a really big shoooooo! Joan Crawford was a legendary self-made star. Mildred Pierce was the jam. Thank you Jordan!
I am glad you told this story. I post Old Hollywood on Instagram and it never fails, when I post Joan, I’m ready for the Mommy Dearest comments, and the negativity. I always would visit her grave, Judy Garland used to be buried there as well. On the very bottom in single crypt. It’s funny I was posting Joan today, but saved my reel for another day.
If one reads Christina's book you will run across strange parallels of Christina's account of her mother and characters Joan played in movies. Queen Bee, Harriatte Crighe, Humoresque, The Damned Don't Cry, ect. Christina invented the story's based on Joan's movies characters and are not true imo. It's a shame the stories tainted Joan's memory. Btw, Christina made over a million on the book and bought out her brother's involvement with $5,000.
And there she is, appearing with Disney characters on behalf of Pepsi/UNICEF at their NYWF pavillion! It's a Small World was the featured attraction. :D
This what a great video! Considering the movie and book aside the thing is Joan is she put more pressure on her two oldest and they might just different experiences than younger ones and she just connect with them much better. Also there some think Christina might been a victim, which might be true, we cant taken that away. I think might been Joan must have a mental illness like OCD cus what she went thougt growing up, she was clari a victim of abuse too, she loved everything cleaned and thats effect Christian negative too.
Ty Jordan for this positive story, i have to agree with you, when someone passes and then you tell smack they can’t defend themselves, so sad. RIP Joan Crawford Steele
Why would she not leave anything to the first two kids she adopted but leave the other two well off? Also. Abusers can hide what they do very very well..... I know this first hand.
Exactly, they usually target one victim and only abuse behind closed doors, so nobody will believe the victim when they finally speak up. Scapegoat of the family here🙋🏻♀️
yes considering she really used Christine later in life for help. The oldest is often the one expected to be reliable, etc....I think the twins came at a time in her life that she was mellower. You can have 5 kids in a family and each see things different because of personalities and treatment by others.
@mcstocks5395 Many interviews with Joan's friends and employees I found led me to believe that.. that they didn't see the need for hard work when they were Her kids, and she was determined to have all of her kids be self sufficient. I really can't understand why former employees and friends would find the need to lie, but that's just me.. seems like as a former employee it would benefit you financially to make accusations or support a book/movie like that to tell your own stories..
She was a real star. But, yes, I believe she did abuse her daughter. I worked in the medical field and some people do horrendous things to their children, and yes, often well-educated, privileged people abuse their children; you would never dream what horrors are occurring behind the doors of beautiful homes. Her penchant for tantrums, sexual promiscuity, obsession with extreme cleaning, extreme control of her body and home, indicate someone damaged and who is attempting to rigidly control her environment. And abusers often choose one child, a scapegoat, who gets the bulk of abuse. It makes sense that the other children did not experience what Christina did. Crawford was still a fascinating, talented woman, but a flawed one.
Thank you for your video of visiting Joan Crawford's grave and your kind remarks about her.👍😊 Joan was an amazing film star and Hollywood legend.❤😊 *I have never viewed Joan was 100% villain in her relationship with her two older children!* I half-believe Christina, but Christina's version of what happened is probably not the complete truth. " *Recollections may vary* " Also, that that point, Joan was not around to defend herself. In addition, people who worked for and with Joan never had anything bad to say about her! (Even years later, after their retirement) She was the consummate professional on the set too. A trait that was much appreciated by the staff and other actors, who wanted their days of filming to go as smoothly as possible. The two younger girls were sent away to boarding school at a young age. At that point Joan was older and may have realized that being a hands-on mother, while working in the then-horrible Hollywood film-making process, was not an ideal situation and it was loaded with undue stress! Also, Alfred Steele was in her life, shortly after she adopted the two younger children. Steele was a very stabilizing influence on Joan. He truly loved her, and she him; furthermore he was a family-type man who was not in competition with Joa or who felt cowed by her star power.
Thanks again Jordan for another beautiful story. If you've never done a video about Gladys Georgianna Greene, the great Jean Arthur, please do. I think she was really wonderful, although very private about her personal life. I'd love to see what you could find out.
Smoking, drinking all day and obsessive sun bathing. I am 46, retired US Paratrooper and look 15 years younger than my dad when he was my age. No smoking, no drinking and sun screen go quite a long way.
I knew when I saw this video that Jordan would treat Joan with the kindness and respect that she deserved. Glad he didn’t give any due to the rumors generated by her bitter daughter. She was a beautiful and uniquely talented actress and a caring person. Not everyone in the limelight would sacrifice time and effort to adopt children, provide them a home and love. She always looks happiest in photos when she was with them, and that speaks volumes.
You mean the children that she obtained illegally from black-market baby rings and the children she later used for publicity purposes to enhance her image? By the way, her adopted son confirmed that she was abusive to him as well.
They were publicity shots done by the studio, so of course everyone is smiling. Christina said that once the lights went out, everything went back to normal. Many abused children look happy in photos, so what?
At 13:54 old "girlfriend " Bette Davis tries to upstage Ms Crawford and Pepsi Cola . However Ms Davis was later upstaged by BD Hyman , Ms Davis' only natural born daughter by writing her own Mommy Dearist book while Ms Davis was still living . This really tore up Ms Davis in her latter years . At least Ms Chistina Crawford waited till after Joan Crawford was dead .
She have may been a strick mum, but aren't we all...we can get pissed off when tired, I don't think really like that, probably just had control...just got angry...as a mum I remember screaming into a pillow as was so stressed out....was tired...motherhood doing all... overwhelmed...My boys 11 and 7 now great Little men so would say that I have brought up two great guys, so loving...hugs everyday, they compassonate, great lads❤

@@minniepearl1052 all I can say is we were not there. If it did happen I feel bad for the children. I think leaving the two kids out of her will is a bit vindictive which would lead me to believe that there may be some truth that she may have mistreated the kids. But like you said we weren't there so we probably will never know for certain.
Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Right?
You do t know what happened so its not up to you to make judgements. I've done the same do what do you think of me ?????
@@JK-vu6hl it’s more what you think of yourself. We don’t have to live with you. But, your tone in this comment does make me wonder.
@@Purplenpinkk judgemental much
@@JK-vu6hl yup, I judge as does everyone, it’s called being human.
Thank you for bringing these amazing people to life for us Jordan. You never fail to captivate us.
I love Joan Crawford. My most favorite movie is Mildred Pierce. I never get tired of watching it!
Great video Jordan and thank you for sharing Joan Crawford story with us.
You left LA (understandably), and yet you're still able to do some great Hollywood vlogs when you want to. That's awesome.
Loved her, she was a wonderful movie star and a good actress.
Awesome, Jordan!
Congratulations for this wonderful story!
👍🌟
Seemed very narcissistic. A good example is temporarily replacing Christina on TV when Christina became hospitalized when ill.
Christina's role was that of a young wife.
Thank you for this wonderful Vlog I love John Crawford very much
Lovely video!
Jordan, you are my favorite Videographer on You Tube! Thanks for all the amazing stories! XO
She was very pretty when she was young. She came from nothing and became a legend.
And there she is, appearing with Disney characters on behalf of Pepsi/UNICEF at their NYWF pavillion! It's a Small World was the featured attraction. :D
Great video, Thank you ❤
Her daughter seems like she is the one that’s unhinged. That’s my view
Jackie Gleason went to her house in Hollywood and said the booze she drank would even kill W C Fields
Great story Jordan. You always do a great job.
Maybe they were ungrateful jerks
Exactly, they usually target one victim and only abuse behind closed doors, so nobody will believe the victim when they finally speak up. Scapegoat of the family here🙋🏻♀️
@@MissPresley69 I'm sorry that happened to you.
yes considering she really used Christine later in life for help.
Great vlog as always! When I watched Mommy Dearest, it gave me chills! Joan was very talented but complex too.
Jordan you are a true gentleman. Excellent video.❤
This was a very informative and positive view that was so nice to see!
Great job on this 👏 Very educational!
!
Thank you for your video of visiting Joan Crawford's grave and your kind remarks about her.👍😊
Joan was an amazing film star and Hollywood legend.❤😊
*I have never viewed Joan was 100% villain in her relationship with her two older children!*
I half-believe Christina, but Christina's version of what happened is probably not the complete truth. " *Recollections may vary* "
Also, that that point, Joan was not around to defend herself. In addition, people who worked for and with Joan never had
anything bad to say about her! (Even years later, after their retirement) She was the consummate professional on the set too.
A trait that was much appreciated by the staff and other actors, who wanted their days of filming to go as smoothly as possible.
The two younger girls were sent away to boarding school at a young age. At that point Joan was older and may have realized that
being a hands-on mother, while working in the then-horrible Hollywood film-making process, was not an ideal situation and it was
loaded with undue stress! Also, Alfred Steele was in her life, shortly after she adopted the two younger children. Steele was a very
stabilizing influence on Joan. He truly loved her, and she him; furthermore he was a family-type man who was not in competition
with Joa or who felt cowed by her star power.
Thanks for the video I enjoyed watching love watching her movies
Thanks again Jordan for another beautiful story. If you've never done a video about Gladys Georgianna Greene, the great Jean Arthur, please do. I think she was really wonderful, although very private about her personal life. I'd love to see what you could find out.
Thank you much for this video..
Wow, Joan Crawford wasn't that old when she died. She looked older than her years, hard life.
Her birth year was altered. Like many female stars, she made herself younger.
I believe her real age was early 70s.
As usual, you deliver, good job on that beautiful movie star Joan!💯🌟
Your videos are excellent, interesting and fun to watch!!
Thank you!!!
BD Hyman wrote that nasty book about her mother, Bette Davis, because she was desperate for money.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc She's now telling people that Bette was a witch.
Thanks again Jordan, another great actress Joan
This was so interesting, but I don't know why any one would say that Joan wasn't beautiful. I think she had a very beautiful face and manner.
Love the video!!Keep making more!!!
Thank you. I really enjoy your videos. ✌️
Jordan I love your vlogs I learn so much .. I saw another TH-camr that actually pointed out all the reasons your unique because you research, educate and are so thorough. I found you from Adam the Woo but you took it to a whole new level! Thank you ❤️
Wow, thank you!
@@DazewithJordantheLion if I said anything wrong I apologize, I just wanted you to know how respected you are among your community. Stay safe 🥰
I’m wishy washy with Joan Crawford. Especially hearing about “Mommy Dearest”. So many say it’s lies but others say it isn’t. I’m glad you did this Vlog. It gives better perspective
I 100%feel the same way. I love her and her movies. However, abuse happens. Sad for all that were involved.
@@minniepearl1052 all I can say is we were not there. If it did happen I feel bad for the children. I’m a huge advocate for adoption but to me if you adopt a child it’s not to make their life worse it’s to give them a better life than what they had. If she did do that it’s horrible but we just don’t know.
@@rebeccarodgers3649 agree totally with you. 💕
Seems odd that if she got along so well with the two younger children that they were left so little out of her total estate in the will.
NO ONE will ever know both sides of the whole story. The lurid stories do not take away from her huge acting career.
Definitely
❤and blessings thanks for your utubes
A former employee of hers, many years ago, told me her daughter is a liar.
Excellent segment Jordan! I wasn't there either, but she was a great actress. It's what one wants to believe. Just like Cary Grant & Randolph Scott, Danny Kaye & Lawrence Olivier, or Bing Crosby & kids from his first marriage. We should remember as fans, how they entertained us. The joy they gave us. 😊
I totally agree..
Love the content here! Great work👍🏻
Mildred Pierce was an excellent movie.
Mildred Pierce was Joan Crawford's best film.
Ah she was fabulous looking, what a beauty
When she first came to Hollywood, she was in some naughty precode movies like The Casting Couch, Velvet Lips, The Plumber and Dancing Lady. These films featured a shower scene and Burlesque review. She lived at the Hotel Washington early on, in Culver City, according to my landlady when I lived there. To quote Bette David "what a dump"! A big climb up to her own feature films and an Oscar!
Yes, I read that Mayer got ahold of the footage and burned it to protect mgm investment
Hey Jordan. I was a youngster when they filmed "The Horror of Party Beach" and "Curse of the Living Corpse" in my home town of Stamford CT. They were a twin bill for the Drive Ins. It's a long story but my Mom was Production Assistant on it and my brother was one of the Monsters! Would you be interested in doing a show about it? I could probably get you a hook up with my brother as well.@@DazewithJordantheLion
