Winter in Sapporo, Japan - it's not that cold - if you do what the locals do!

  • When most TH-camrs talk about Sapporo in the winter, they show you tough winter conditions of snow, freezing temperatures, and ice. Most focus on the "Yuki Matsuri," the Snow Festival, held during the second week of February every year (outside of Covid years). But what was fascinating for me was how the locals in Sapporo get around in the winter. They are not walking outside if they can help it, they are walking underground! There is an amazing labyrinth of walkways, annexes, passageways, and subway stations from Odori Station to Sapporo Station along where all the major banks and companies are located. It is officially called the Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Pedestrian Space also known as "Chikaho," which opened on March 12, 2011. There are so many shops, restaurants, coffee shops, toilets, information centers, etc., located in their underground sanctuary. What a brilliant idea!
