Had Stich consolidated his 3-0 lead in the 4th set tibreak in this match against Lendl, he would have faced Edberg in the Semis. That would have been a great re-match. Remember how Stich beat Edberg just little over a month ago in the 1991 Wimbledon semi-final where Edberg did no drop a serve.
Yup, I have the book. Pete does say that Stich did not enjoy being in the limelight. Stich is among the very few players (krajicek the other) to boast positive head-to-head lead against Sampras who I believe was the greatest player ever.
@@Zenoandturtle agree on g.o.a.t. comment, peak athleticism Sampras on a fast court is toughest test in history of tennis. Precision, power, body control, nerves of steel and humility; new Gen could learn from him. Borg and Pete should've stayed longer
Stich was a great player, still underrated by many. He deserved 4 or 5 Grand Slam titles I believe.
Without a doubt. He should have beaten Kafelnikov in 1996 French Open. Phenomenal big serve-volley game.

In Sampras autobiography he states that Stich was his most intimidating opponent
Pete lost quite offen against him....and Pete was right when he said that If everyone plays at his best, Stich ist the best...
That is true.
