I tried tying this knot with a helmet on...but it just made me too over confident and I almost hanged myself...damn stupid horse's fault again! ;)

Pome one taught me this knot once when I was sailing (the skipper was big into knots), but I could never remember it's name, nor find any videos for me to have a go again. How wonderful to have it pop up on one of my favourite channels.

I love how clearly you explain things in all of your videos so that they are pretty much dummy proof. Thank you.

Nice tutorial, Rick. When I started knotting, I noticed pretty quick, the hard part is not to tie the knot, it's the finishing part (in particular with decorative knots)that needs the most practice.

Good explanation. I learned off of a bad drawing in a horse magazine 25 years ago. At that time I tied rope halters and sold them. I wanted some detail to them. So I used a piece of cutoff rope and tied a Alamar to the bottom loops in halter. Just for looks. Attention to the details in the knots are important.
    Thanks for sharing your expertise

The single Alamar Knot is just like the Japanese Tsuna Knots (called a few different names depending on their colour). It's a religious symbol for protection and you will find it in a lot of Japanese Bippu aka"VIP" tuned cars.
Its great to see a proper guide for this though. I have always been interested in different knots and while I may never use such a knot, I always like learning new things so thank you. I hope Buddy and Mr.. T aren't too cold over there :)

My back is out again so I figured I'd try this while unable to get around. Hay string was the only thing available within reach. Knot is a mess, but the cats had fun helping! lol

Well, I'm impressed. I used to work from home for a rope company. I'd pick up huge spools of rope, cut them with a burner to length, and then spliced one end back into the rope and made dock line. Very, very secure on the spliced end. No amount of pulling will make it come undone, and I made a few for lead ropes. That and tying shoes is about the extent of my knot-tying abilities...my brain twists what my eyes are seeing and I get turned around. :)

I looked up this knot, and apparently it's traditionally an indicator of how good the horse is - a horse with this knot can do any roping task that may need doing.

GoldenLioness100 So people say and so people post on the net, it does not make it so and anyone can tie it, put it on a horse and it means nothing to the horse and does not mean the horse is good. That is like saying the more expensive the saddle you buy, the better the horse will perform, not true. Tradition and words and books are written by people who see things from their view and beliefs, it does not make it so.

@@ThinkLikeAHorse...Well since it was developed in the Californio tradition,i would say, that their definition,is correct, regardless of weather you agree or disagree..

Actually,,it really had nothing to do with roping, but reigning..It was a Statement, that a horse was a top notch bridle horse, that didnt even need a bridle..If someone questioned it and called you on it,you were expected to reach up and strip your bridle off and ride them doing maneuvers, with nothing but the Mecate around their necks..If the rider distorted the Alamar Knot, while doing so,,it was a disgrace and would be removed, until the horse was truly straight up to that level..Usually there was money and more importantly honor involved,,so a person had better be quite sure of themselves and or their mount,to call someone out on it,or to hang one on ones horse..

Just made one of these. Had a brain fart when ordering rope for halters and leads and got 5/16 instead of 5/8 for leads. duh. So used one piece for this neck rope. Easy to follow, although I did have to re-do the first over under loop once. :)

thanks for the presentation, made it first time, it's not that difficult, for me anyway...it's a good knot for an adjustable loop because of the double pretcel makes it stable during adjusting :D

'symbolize a finished horse'..............a, so called, finished bridle horse...................a horse that has 'graduated' to the spade bit. Really?! Some traditions are best left to the dust of time. Going from various sizes of traditional hackamores to a spade bit is stupid. 'But it is tradition'............Well, one knows how I feel about that. Look at the unnatural head position in the finished bridle horse. Why is it perpendicular to the ground? Because that is the neutral position of the spade. Change the angle and the spade is engaged. Then there is the pain.

Think Like A Horse I tried it with one of my lead rope's, managed to sort of do it! haha you were right. Probably would have worked a lot better if i did it inside instead of out in 15 degree weather.
