      the soundtrack in the background "vague voices" is really odd, it gives a scary and mysterious vibe, the feeling that its just another day at work, but of course, we know what happen next

      polycount, shaders and textures might evolve, but everything is a product of their time, and if that product is done with passion and care it becomes timeless. See the classic Resident Evil games, Halo, Half Life, etc. Back then we wished for games to be closer to reality (aesthetic-wise), but now that they are, I think it's time to realise it's not a special thing to have at all.

  • @wysoft
    @wysoft 3 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    HL1 really felt like you were first hand witnessing a world ending event. The story flowed like a well written novel. The situations and environments you felt yourself in really made it seem like you had to get out of Black Mesa, if only to find out what had happened to the world outside. There were times when you thought you were going to make it out, only to be sucked back in. I still remember the first time I hit the surface when the military showed up, expecting them to be there to help, and not at all expecting them to start shooting at me. I actually felt bad fighting them in the game. The fact the game showed they were fighting the portal storm invasion as well as trying to seal up and quarantine Black Mesa at all costs made it clear how out of control the situation had become. Haven't played it in years but I still think about it some times. HL1 was up there (maybe more so) than DOOM in its sheer influence on gaming for decades to come.

    Aaaah this was the best game of the nineties. Back in the days there was no widespread internet as of today, no youtube reviews. We as kids collected video game magazines that came with CDs full of playable demos and review/test-videos. I first saw half life in a review and could not believe how a game can have such fancy things like scripted scenes (Scientists being pulled into ventilation shafts, helicopters dropping soldiers on ropes etc). Half Life was absolutely revolutionary and back then we couldn't imagine how graphics could be more photorealistic. I remember playing the demo (Half-Life: Uplink) at least 50 times. I was really that good!

    At a time when games still had the flashy exaggerated and colorful art direction, this game made something bold; a really long, eerie interactive opening sequence with no action. There were no GUI clutter, just soft subtitles used extremely sparingly. From the first moment you were given the idea that this was going to be an "experience". Probably turned off most numb, or stupid gamers away, but it was followed up by an intense 10-12 hours long incredible series of events.

And 1998 was a super heavy year for gaming: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Grim Fandango, StarCraft, Baldur's Gate, Thief, Unreal all came out that year. Something magical might have been in the water because 1998 was a pivotal gaming point in many aspects, probably one of the best years ever especially for PC gaming.

    Everyone always goes on and on about how Half-Life 2 is the best game ever. I don't think so, but compared to the others, I still think the original Half-Life beats HL2 to the ground. Idk, there were so many things in this game that were far more impressive than HL2 did IMO. The intro, the situations, the characters and enemies you encounter, the environments you traverse, this was basically godlike, and I can definitely see why people still praise it to this day. So, to those who worry how I don't like Half-Life 2, take comfort that I think the original is till beyond impressive.

    • @benwasserman8223

      It means he doesn't have any protocol to follow during an emergency. He can do whatever he wants, attempt to escape, stay and help, it's up to him.
      In Blue Shift, Barney's priority was something like:
      "First priority: preservation of Black Mesa Facilities.
      Secondary Priority: Safety of personnel.
      Low Priority: Self."
      But Barney was security so he was in a way, expendable.

    Good morning and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa Research Facility personnel. The time is 8:47 AM. Current topside temperature is 93 degrees with an estimated high of 105. The Black Mesa Compound is maintained at a pleasant 68 degrees at all times.
    This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities. If your intended destination is a high-security area beyond Sector C, you will need to return to the central transit hub in Area 9 and board a high-security train. If you have not yet submitted your identity to the retinal clearance system, you must report to Black Mesa personnel for processing before you will be permitted into the high-security branch of the transit system.
    Due to the high toxicity of material routinely handled in the Black Mesa Compound, no smoking, eating, or drinking are permitted within the Black Mesa transit system. Please keep your limbs inside the train at all times. Do not attempt to open the doors until the train has come to a complete halt at the station platform. In the event of an emergency, passengers are to remain seated and await further instruction. If it is necessary to exit the train, disabled personnel should be evacuated first. Please stay away from electrified rails and proceed to an emergency station until assistance arrives.
    A reminder that the Black Mesa Hazard Course Decathlon will commence this evening at 1900 hours in the Level 3 facility. The semi-finals for high-security personnel will be announced in a separate, secure-access transmission. Remember: more lives than your own may depend on your fitness.

      Do you have a friend or relative who would make a valuable addition to the Black Mesa team? Immediate openings are available in the areas of Materials Handling and low-clearance security. Please contact Black Mesa personnel for further information. If you have an associate in the background of Theoretical Physics, Biotechnology, or other high-tech disciplines, please contact our Civilian Recruitment Division. The Black Mesa Research Facility is an equal opportunity employer.
      A reminder to all Black Mesa personnel: regular radiation and biohazard screenings are a requirement of continued employment in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Missing a scheduled urinalysis or radiation checkup is grounds for immediate termination. If you feel you have been exposed to radioactive or other hazardous materials in the course of your duties, contact your Radiation Safety Officer immediately! Work safe, work smart. Your future depends on it.
      Now arriving at Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities. Please stand back from the automated door and wait for the security officer to verify your identity. Before exiting the train, be sure to check your area for personal belongings. Thank you and have a very safe and productive day.
      Sorry for spamming

    One thing that bugs me about this intro is that no research facility, even in the US, would use Fahrenheit to measure temperature. But then again, this is Black Mesa.

    • @michaelmerritt7406
      @michaelmerritt7406 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not a high-security train, and may move people without a background in STEM. Office workers, M&E, janitors, etc.
      And it being a US-based company with, presumably, a majority of it's employees being American, even with STEM professionals there's a tendency to think of ambient temperatures and whatnot for day-to-day life in degrees Fahrenheit.

    2:53 - 3:18 Makes me wonder about the rest of the game's story a little bit... What if it's all just one big test? A decathlon is an athletic event usually associated with track and field events (going off of this brief google definition). So just imagine what a "Hazard Course" decathlon would be. Thought it was worth picking up if it's even anything. Maybe I'm not the only one that thought this...
