I'm agreeing also. It must be tempting to preamble with "So this next one, y'all been sayin that it's as hard as we're gonna hear from this band, so that'll be interesting!" and then take a detour for three minutes. But they DO give good analysis in the middle of the song, but not too much, 1, 2, or 3 times (a 5-second rewind would be nice so's not to miss cool transitions, but whatev, heh) and at the end. I AM waiting for the time that Che answers "Uh, no." to La's "You ready?" LOL!

Get in, killit, get out? Yeah, but.... I've, personally, heard these songs many times, so.. I wanna know what these fellas think. I wanna know if and how classic rock works or doesn't work for them. I want a bit more elaboration from these dudes, is what I'm saying.

This is one of Styx' most proggy tunes, kind of Yes influences showing. Another midwest Chicago area band.
The extended instrumental and synth work put it into prog territory, that's when they were at their best.
    I highly recommend
    >CASTLE WALLS
    >SUITE MADAME BLUE
    >MAN IN THE WILDERNESS
    >LIGHT UP
    >CRYSTAL BALL
    >GRAND ILLUSION
All from their best 3 albums, Equinox, Crystal Ball and Grand Illusion from the mid 70s.

I graduated HS in ‘79. These reaction channels (and especially yours) reveals how spoiled we were with music. Exhibit A this song. Which comes out of nowhere with its (as you say) musical theater opening and then rocking second half. I will be honest, I don’t think we appreciated the wide range of outstanding music the was regularly produced.

They should go back to 1975 ... Album - Equinox ... Song - SUITE MADAME BLUE ... the song still resonates with many and probably will for many more decades. I agree, though, that Crystal Ball is one of their best and most popular. There are so many great songs, and their earlier songs are often underplayed and underappreciated.

KANSAS was ALOT MORE PROGRESSIVE than Styx in the 70s. Not even close. I would call about 6 of Styx' songs truly progressive rock. Kansas put out 6 solid ALBUMS of Progressive Rock in the 70s alone. The best American Progressive Rock Band.
I just saw their 50th Anniv Tour just a week ago.
      >Song for America
      >Miracles Out of Nowhere
      >Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)
      >Icarus II
      >The Wall
      >THE PINNACLE!!!
      >Glimpse of Home
      >Lonely Wind
      >Belexes
      >Hold On
      >Carry on My Wayward Son
and that is only a small portion of their Progressive tunes.
Styx was "proggy" sometimes. Prog Lite maybe.
      They never composed epics like
      >Journey from Mariabronn
      >Apercu
      >Lamplight Symphony
      >Incomudru Hymn to the Atman
      >Mysteries and Mayhem
      >Cheyenne Anthem
      >Magnum Opus
      >Portrait (He Knew)
      >Closet Chronicles
      >Sparks of the Tempest
      >Paradox
      >The Spider

There's a blast from the past. I remember hearing this 40+ years ago on the radio. Solid song and group when Dennis DeYoung fronted with the vocals. When he left Styx kinda went south. There's a good and lengthy interview with him where he talks about band, he also has some stories where he interacted with Zeppelin. Also talks about today's music in general and why things are so different now. It's on y t..

The entire "Grand Illusion" album is one hit after another. You can listen to it end to end, and you won't find a bad track on it. Lead singer Dennis DeYoung did fancy himself a "Broadway" singer. He tried to take the band in that direction ("Mr. Roboto"), and that is probably one of the reasons the band parted ways with him.

I saw them for the 2nd time last year and the sound the same and what a visual show they put on. They were touring with Loverboy and REO Speedwagon. What a show they all put on. After them, I saw Tears for Fears for the second time, and Santana was touring with Earth, wind and fire. I’ve seen Santana about four times now and it was the 2nd time Earth Wind & Fire. To say that I go to a lot of concerts in understatement. I have been going since I was 16. I’ll be 62 next March. I am slowly approaching close to 300 concerts over the last 40+ years. I will keep going to concerts until I can’t no more.🥰

I heard this song (and entire album) far more times than I chose to. Styx was my then girlfriend/now wife’s all time favorite band. She reminded me Dennis DeYoung was from her neighborhood every single time she popped that eight track into the deck of my 72 VW Beetle. Great memories!

My favorite TV was the brief Freaks and Geeks. In it the lead freshamn geek is at a school dance abd asks the cheerleader he's got a crush on to dance. He can't dance and this soundslike a slow ballad. They slowly cross across the floor through to crowd to an empty space....and the guitars kick in. This partially sums up the whole show.

"Crystal Ball" uses a similar approach with a soft start that explodes into a highly energetic song. It's one of the best by Styx, along with "Snowblind" and "Half-penny two penny",

The first two albums I ever bought were Styx….”Pieces Of Eight”, because of the songs I’d been hearing on the radio, and this album, “The Grand Illusion”, which was actually the previous album….and this is my favorite Styx song of all time!
Styx is my wife’s favorite group and another way we connected back in high school.
Styx formed in Chicago at the end of the sixties with founding members Dennis De Young (Lead vocals and keyboards) and the twin brothers John Panazzo (Drums) and Chuck Panazzo (Bass)….the classic lineup also includes James Young (Lead/rhythm guitar and lead vocals) and Tommy Shaw (Lead/rhythm guitar and lead vocals)
Yes, there are three lead vocalists, depending on the song and Tommy and James traded playing lead guitar, also depending on the song.
Extremely talented group of musicians with a vast library of eclectic songs…and you could definitely say they were prog.
I saw them at my local fairgrounds in 2013, with three classic members…still a great show and I found myself singing at the top of my lungs with every song…just like I did in my room or with the living room stereo when I was a teen!
Other of their tracks to check out are Renegade, Too Much Time On My Hands, Lady, Sweet Madam Blue, Miss America, The Grand Illusion, Babe, Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man), Crystal Ball, Blue Collar Man, Man In The Wilderness, Snowblind, Queen Of Spades….. I could go on but I’ll leave it at that!

Styx hail from Chicago and consisted of James Young (guitar and vocals), Dennis DeYoung (Keyboards and vocals), John Panozzo (Drums), Chuck Panozzo (Bass) and John Curulewski (Guitar). Curulewski quit in 1976 after six akbums (Styx I - 1972, Styx II - 1973, The Serpent Is Rising - 1973, Man Of Miracles - 1974, Equinox - 1975 and Crystal Ball - 1976) to spend more time with his family. He got replaced by Tommy Shaw (Guitar and vocals). Singing duties were covered by either Dennis DeYoung (here), James Young and Tommy Shaw. Their "best" period was from 1975 until 1979, covering Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces Of Eight (1978) and Cornerstone (1979). Later they started to go more chart-inclined with Dennis DeYoung gathering more influence in the song-writing. DeYoung was more broadway-minded (good observation there) while James Young and Tommy Shaw were more rock-friendly.

Dennis DeYoung is an odd guy with a superb voice and great song writer. Tommy Shaw tons of talent in his own right. They were able to manage to put out some fantastic songs. I wish Dennis DeYoung was more appreciative of Tommy Shaw but it's those egos that are part of the process. Styx was great. At a time so many fantastic bands still rolling out great material. Styx definitely more oriented to radio airplay, but I always like it when Styx is on the radio or grocery store piped in tunes.
