I'm agreeing also. It must be tempting to preamble with "So this next one, y'all been sayin that it's as hard as we're gonna hear from this band, so that'll be interesting!" and then take a detour for three minutes. But they DO give good analysis in the middle of the song, but not too much, 1, 2, or 3 times (a 5-second rewind would be nice so's not to miss cool transitions, but whatev, heh) and at the end. I AM waiting for the time that Che answers "Uh, no." to La's "You ready?" LOL!

Get in, killit, get out? Yeah, but.... I've, personally, heard these songs many times, so.. I wanna know what these fellas think. I wanna know if and how classic rock works or doesn't work for them. I want a bit more elaboration from these dudes, is what I'm saying.

Love me some STYX! Great group out of Chicago. I believe you’d love most of their material but I’d like to suggest “Renegade” next it too will knock your caps back. Progressive, conceptual Rock music at its best; believe it or not they do have a couple of great ballads too!

I graduated HS in ‘79. These reaction channels (and especially yours) reveals how spoiled we were with music. Exhibit A this song. Which comes out of nowhere with its (as you say) musical theater opening and then rocking second half. I will be honest, I don’t think we appreciated the wide range of outstanding music the was regularly produced.

A top ten hit from 'The Grand Illusion' (estimated at over 6 million copies sold), the first of four consecutive multi-platinum albums. KANSAS was ALOT MORE PROGRESSIVE than Styx in the 70s. Not even close. I would call about 6 of Styx' songs truly progressive rock. Kansas put out 6 solid ALBUMS of Progressive Rock in the 70s alone. The best American Progressive Rock Band.
I just saw their 50th Anniv Tour just a week ago.
      >Song for America
      >Miracles Out of Nowhere
      >Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)
      >Icarus II
      >The Wall
      >THE PINNACLE!!!
      >Glimpse of Home
      >Lonely Wind
      >Belexes
      >Hold On
      >Carry on My Wayward Son
and that is only a small portion of their Progressive tunes.
Styx was "proggy" sometimes. Prog Lite maybe.
      They never composed epics like
      >Journey from Mariabronn
      >Apercu
      >Lamplight Symphony
      >Incomudru Hymn to the Atman
      >Mysteries and Mayhem

They should go back to 1975 ... Album - Equinox ... Song - SUITE MADAME BLUE ... the song still resonates with many and probably will for many more decades. I agree, though, that Crystal Ball is one of their best and most popular. There are so many great songs, and their earlier songs are often underplayed and underappreciated.

The entire "Grand Illusion" album is one hit after another. You can listen to it end to end, and you won't find a bad track on it. Lead singer Dennis DeYoung did fancy himself a "Broadway" singer. He tried to take the band in that direction ("Mr. Roboto"), and that is probably one of the reasons the band parted ways with him.

Styx is an American rock band from Chicago, formed in 1972 and is best known for melding hard rock guitar balanced with acoustic guitar, synthesizers mixed with acoustic piano. Alot of upbeat tracks and strong powerful, power ballads that incorporated elements of international musical theater into their sound. Along with gorgeous harmonies and strong vocals. Here's another song if interested. "Styx - To Much Time On My Hands" Fun reaction fellas...La seemed to really enjoy this one. Take care~

And, also like this, the lyrics are pretty off the chain good as well! Great to see y'all digging Styx.

Great pick up on the "Broadway" sounding beginning. It was actually the demise of the group. Dennis DeYoung, the lead singer, was a big musical / Broadway fan and wanted to take the band in that direction. It's very evident from the Paradise Theater LP. Most of the other members wanted to just be a straight rock band, And the band fell apart not long after that. Another great one guys!

I wish Dennis DeYoung was more appreciative of Tommy Shaw but it's those egos that are part of the process. Styx was great. At a time so many fantastic bands still rolling out great material. Styx definitely more oriented to radio airplay, but I always like it when Styx is on the radio or grocery store piped in tunes.

I think you're missing my point. That's a list of American bands that are easily better bands than Styx if you took a general consensus of the rock journalists, DJs, music industry etc along with the educated American rock fan since the 60s. And those were off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm missing some.

Interesting you mentioned Broadway. The band kicked out the singer and lead songwriter for all these great songs because of musical differences. They wanted to do more traditional rock and he was more into theatrical songs. Never the same after that. If you want to hear the song that first made us stand up and take notice try "Light Up"!

    • @bookhouseboy280
      @bookhouseboy280 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dennis and J.Y. had the most differences. Tommy was into Yes and Alan Parsons Project and liked theatrical songs like Mr. Roboto. Dennis was tied up with solo projects and then when he wasn't well enough to tour, J.Y. and Tommy felt that they had to make the decision to continue without him. Dennis believes he was fired because of pettiness and impatience.

  • @JimmyRJump

Styx hail from Chicago and consisted of James Young (guitar and vocals), Dennis DeYoung (Keyboards and vocals), John Panozzo (Drums), Chuck Panozzo (Bass) and John Curulewski (Guitar). Curulewski quit in 1976 after six akbums (Styx I - 1972, Styx II - 1973, The Serpent Is Rising - 1973, Man Of Miracles - 1974, Equinox - 1975 and Crystal Ball - 1976) to spend more time with his family. He got replaced by Tommy Shaw (Guitar and vocals). Singing duties were covered by either Dennis DeYoung (here), James Young and Tommy Shaw. Their "best" period was from 1975 until 1979, covering Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces Of Eight (1978) and Cornerstone (1979). Later they started to go more chart-inclined with Dennis DeYoung gathering more influence in the song-writing. DeYoung was more broadway-minded (good observation there) while James Young and Tommy Shaw were more rock-friendly.

I always hated sticks when the beginning man. And Dennis DeYoung was okay as a singer but mostly he was just all coked up and I thought they were all lightweight stuff compared to bands I really like like Boston and Kansas and rush and you know the the bands that actually were Heavy Hitters. But I have to say man sticks did get into me and especially what is it from their album Pieces Of Eight? America? Something like that that went to hit home but most of the rest of it is like yeah they're good, but I don't know they're just not stacking up against the Heavy Hitters in my opinion

Welcome to my favorite band. This song is their anthem - check out the live performance from 1996's "Return To Paradise" tour (almost 20 years after its release). Their live versions always rock harder.
This song has the slow/softer introduction that then morphs to rock out - a common thing of theirs. It is also an uplifting song of hope like most of their stuff - songs to make you feel good instead of the depressing mood of a lot. Even "Renegade" about a guy facing death is somewhat upbeat.
STYX has always had 3 lead singers and songwriters, each with different stuff; so it makes for a wide variety of song styles - keeps it interesting. I guess you can say like Queen's variety.
Here are a few of the many songs I could recommend:
    "Blue Collar Man"( th-cam.com/video/astDDt5OUYM/w-d-xo.html ).
    "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue"( th-cam.com/video/KOlJPA2tUrw/w-d-xo.html )
    "Fooling Yourself"(Album: th-cam.com/video/apTy_Wez4V4/w-d-xo.html , Live: th-cam.com/video/brDDzKOcvPA/w-d-xo.html ).
"Young Man"( th-cam.com/video/8qXT9k9LY-U/w-d-xo.html ). Early Styx by JY.
    "Queen Of Spades"(Album: th-cam.com/video/FXd0JR2SRE8/w-d-xo.html , Live by current lineup: th-cam.com/video/6yhOY0r-6R4/w-d-xo.html ).
    "Man In The Wilderness" ( th-cam.com/video/biKrDFBp0ns/w-d-xo.html ).
"CASTLE WALLS" (Fan video: th-cam.com/video/02cZoM5reqo/w-d-xo.html )
    "Crystal Ball" (Live: th-cam.com/video/5dYH62bpmec/w-d-xo.html , Album: th-cam.com/video/6X8FFR9qf2Y/w-d-xo.html ).

Styx is the best. Dennis DeYoung on the keyboards. James Young and Tommy Shaw on guitars, Chuck and John Pansazzo on bass and drums. The group is from Chicago. This whole album is fire. I suggest you listen to the Styx masterpiece Suite Madam Blue from their album Equinox. And Renegade from Pieces of Eight . Thanks for your reaction.
