Green River Guitar Lesson: Tips and Tricks for Blues Rock Players
If you're a fan of blues and rock guitar, then this “Green River” guitar lesson by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) is perfect for leveling up your skills.
This song skillfully blends the two styles of music and adds a swampy feel for good measure.
I’m going to break it down for you step-by-step so when you're done you'll have an awesome version that will sound great for accompanying yourself, playing along with the recording, or even jamming with other people as well.
Who wrote Green River?
"Green River" was written by John Fogerty for the American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was first released as a single in July 1969, one month before the full Green River album was released.
The song was written about a vacation spot on Putah Creek, near Winters, California that Fogerty used to go to as a kid.
Green River Chords
You’ll only need to know 3 chords to play “Green River” and they are E7, C, and A.

Jon is a great teacher. i have done many years teaching guitar and Jon is one of the best: Clear precise instruction.
Great lesson! There's just one thing that pretty much everyone misses out when teaching or covering this tune, which is the changes on the main Riff after the first "chorus". The main Riff keeps varying during the song, after each chorus, which to me this is what adds that special spice to tune. So, hope it could be a nice to know info. 🎸🎶💪🏻
Another excellent video by Jon! Amazing! 😀👍
Nice to see the guy from school of rock is still doing guitar lessons
Excellent! I learned this from my guitar teacher way back when the group was still together. I was only learning chords though and you added all the bass and lead fills. Still a great song to hear and play.....
Awesome brother from Warren 😎
Excellent Jon. Thanks!
Another great song for me to learn. My hats off to you friend. thanks for all these awsome videos you make, they really help me get better and keep me from getting bored at learning guitar. 2 years and getting alot better.
Decent and thanks Jon...I wish you would really dig into this more though like you did with Tuesdays Gone..Fantastic !...need some help after 2 verses where 2 guitars are playing and solo....let's go and Bring it home ! Cheers & thanks for all you share and do
Great tutorial!….don’t forget the higher runs and the lead.
I wish you added the other parts during the song. But dead on for what you did
Fogerty plays the opening and first-position fill licks with index on the 5th string (B note) and middle-ring fingers on 3rd-4th strings (D and B notes) respectively. See the 1970 Royal Albert Hall footage.
Awesome lesson and playing
Classic tune! Great lesson!

Any tips for getting fingers out of sync with the thumb, my fingers and thumb don’t seem to want to move independently?
Wow💥
wELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl
Take me back down' where cool water flows y'all
HELL YEAH , IF I'M GONNA LET SOMEONE ELSE TEACH A CREDENCE SONG , THEY HAD BY GOD BETTER BE WEARING A FLANNEL (PLAID) SHIRT !! 😂
Hey John, if you suck at finger picking can you play that with the pic and still make it ring like that the way Fogarty did?
I was just curious.
Fogerty played it pick and fingers.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver yes I know he hybrid picked
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Best thing to do is practice, practice, practice
Wow John nice playing I am motivated to learn this song how do I buy the TABS 🙏?
hi do u have this tabbed out? im trying to add the bass and losing count
The John Lee Hooker Chord.
No. 1 struggle with the guitar...the guitar lol 👍🏻
Still wrong, but I like how you at least attempted to address those low E notes.
I think John Fogerty and I may be the only ones who do it like the record.
Dang my thumb can't keep the beat with my fingers!
skinny marty?
If you can't show the whole lead guitar parts through the whole then your not a guitar teacher
Huh?
You're used to getting lots of free stuff, eh "Mr. Govt Cheese"?
You spend way too much time going over the slide chord and then breeze througg the riff. I have to watch another video bc you go way to fast and then move on. I am lost. Slow down when you teach riffing!!!!
terrible lesson idk how everyone thinks this is great
