- Hey Everyone,
I will be vlogging my week as a substitute teacher. I have no prior experience as a substitute teacher. I also did not receive training on how to be a substitute teacher. I am learning on the go and taking tips from people around me who are teachers or have been a substitute teacher longer than I have. Eventually, I do hope to be able to share any tips and tricks that I have learned along the way.
Start date: February 16th, 2021
Pay: $94/day with Bachelor's Degree
Schedule: You get to make your own

I have applied to become a substitute teacher and I am watching as many videos as possible in order to give me a better idea of what to expect if, in fact, I am fortunate enough to gain a position. Thank you for this presentation. I am in the process of getting registered to become a substitute teacher in an area of Houston Texas. I found the district has a lot of information in a document for new substitutes outlining all the requirements and procedures. I found some second hand books on eBay about classroom management and substitute teaching practice … also found there is a Substitute Teacher Lounge podcast and facebook group.

I would just say when you need help as a sub, especially when your subbing multiple days, you can ask another teacher for assistance. Many subs carry extra activities that are season related. When you come early and see plans you don't understand you can ask another team teacher or just go on TH-cam.
I don't think its appropriate to bash teachers and students on TH-cam. The 15 minute cool down should be used for bathroom and story. When you're confused re alouds are a great option. There's to much identifiable information and race should not be addressed. I love these videos and hope no one is discouraged from the profession.

Had my first day today subbing for a middle school math class. Had 7th and 8th graders had to be strict with them.

Girl I feel you! I'm subbing just for now and am not sure if I still want to pursue teaching. What else are you thinking of besides teaching?
Yeaa. I thought about teaching, but idk. I've also thought about dental hygiene.
So relatable , I was so confused at things. The kids were like looking at me like we’ll help us. It was beyond confusing, I think I will have activities I understand just in case. Otherwise kids act out if there is confusion, and down time
Yessss, and even with some of the work the teachers left, the kids would zip right through it. Extra activities are a must!

Being a High school teacher is much easier compared to elementary

I love elementary because that’s all I’ve taught, I’ll be a kindergarten teacher for the up coming fall year. Until then I think I want to sub high school🤷🏽♀️ just to have a easier load. I’m not sure though.
So as a sub do you have the option to pick between elementary, middle school, or high school? Or does it depend on what district you work in? I’m thinking about doing substitute teaching but I only want to do elementary, at least to start out.
I had the option to pick between elementary, middle, and high. The staffing company I worked for opened shifts for every grade level, but we had the opportunity to choose. We just had to ensure we met the month's required hours.

Lol! thank you! At that time, i think the pay was about $90 per day, and it increased if you worked in more urban areas of the cities

What would you say is the hardest thing about subbing for Elementary? My friend is a sub and is helping me with becoming one. She mainly does middle and high school, but I personally don't think I can handle older kids. Especially not highschoolers since I'm not that much older than them.
Lol! I felt the same way. The hardest thing about subbing for elementary would have to be trying to keep the kids on task to get them to finish their work. Lol. They want to do everything else but do their work.
What’s the qualifications in being a sub?
omgosh girl i just looooooove your energy and it tickled me when you looked dead into the camera like; i had to improvise because you didn't know they wasn't suppose to have recess. i start subbing next week on valentines day and i'm trying to picture everything that could go wrong. lol i claim you as my friend honey because we need to talk about this. Like im going to need another sub to talk to on a weekly basis. So are you still subbing this year?

Lol! you will be fine. I was scared as well but there was people there to help me and teachers usually leave good lesson plans.

What about Pre - K or Kindergarten ?
Kindergarten wasn’t my favorite but I did enjoy the kids. I haven’t tried pre-k

I think I would do better with high schoolers. They are less active. Those elementary school kids sounds emotionally and mentally draining.
