    Best how to wire relay I've found. Thank you. The led drl's I installed on my 2007 Toyota Tundra caused me problems after 5 years. They came with a harness and tapped into the acc and headlight + so they would come on when the truck was started. I've decided to wire them to a switch in the cab so I can turn them on and off as I choose. I have to figure out which wires are which coming off of the harness. That shouldn't be too difficult. I already have the switch. Just need to get the relay and in line fuse. Thank you. I look forward to future how to videos.

      @RockyXTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you found the video useful, thanks for watching and I wish you luck with your install! Keep in mind that some Toyota's use a "positive ground" setup for their lights. This meaning they don't use the positive wire on the switch, they use the ground on the switch and the power is on all the time. Some quick probing around with a multi-meter will tell you if yours is wired like this.

      @@RockyXTV I am building a system for a guy. It's a surround sound system to be used outdoors at a drive in theater. He only wanted one switch, and the switch was rated at only 5A. I knew it would not be enough, especially since I am installing a huge 2.1 amp, and a voltage booster, that will power the amp at 48 volts. I used a 12 volt, 40 A relay. Your video was perfect.

    Question, Can i use two different voltages? id like to run 12v as my signal into 86 but run 18v into pole 30 and out 87. Any ideas?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure... I've never done it before. In theory it seems like it would work as long as the relay can handle the 18V. Pins 85 & 86 only control the electromagnetic coil which makes a physical connection between pins 30 & 87. So the 18V SHOULDN'T come in contact with the 12v on 85 & 86. I'm still not sure though.
      If you do try it, make sure to let me know what happens, I'm curious now.
      Thanks for watching!

    I have a new relay that the contacts appear to be in a closed position with nothing connected. Is this normal? When I connect power, the contacts separate. Disconnect the power, the contacts close, the opposite of what it should be doing.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are relays that function like this, but they are normally labeled as N/C or "Normally Closed" relays. 5 pin relays can function like this as well if you are using pin 87a.

  • @PittsburghCrawling
    @PittsburghCrawling 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don’t know if you will see this or not, but should your accessory switch (which has 3 connectors) be grounded as well? I see you have your power hooked up, and the middle hooked up which I believe to be the accessory terminal but you still have a non connected terminal which I believe to be your ground. Did you forget to ground that or?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read and reply to all comments, it's one of my favorite interactive things to do as a TH-cam creator. The ground for rocker switches is not required as it performs no safety function. The ground on the switch is for illumination, if your switch has a ground that means it can light up if you want it to, if not you just don't wire in the ground. Thanks for watching!

Would I just get rid of the ground since that just lights up the switch, use the red power wire tap it into a fuse and white trigger wire attach that to the headlight power wire?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His way is also correct. backwards but correct. Pins 30 & 87 will always be used as power IN or power OUT for your light, they can be switched. The same goes for pins 85 & 86, one of them needs to be a ground and the other a positive "trigger" or "coil" wire in order to activate the relay coil and turn it on. In a few diagrams from years ago showed that you could wire relays in a somewhat backwards manner and they would still work. A lot of people picked this up as being the standard way of wiring relays. People learn how to do something one way and don't like to change I guess. The way I told you is the standard and "correct" way of wiring a relay in an automotive application such as yours. Their are other ways to wire relays for different applications as well.

    Does anyone know if this setup with a 12 volt battery would work with a 3 volt accessory? I’m trying to wire a garage door opener to the passing high beam button on my motorcycle. I just don’t know if the relay would prevent the battery from frying the opener. Thanks

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could use a relay with pin #86 wired to your passing switch, pin #85 to a ground then you would have to send only 3 volts to pin #30 from the battery in your opener, then back out of the relay via pin #87 back to your opener to activate it. This would use 12 volts to turn the relay on and off (pins 85&85) but would only pass the 3 volts through pin #30 to pin #87. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

    how to works 75a the middle pin on relay?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pin 75a on a relay is a constant ON so to say. As long as you have Pin 30 wired up to power, Pin 75a will have power as well. When the relay is turned ON the power is taken away from Pin 75a and goes out through Pin 75. Then when the relay is back OFF, power will again go through Pin 75a and not Pin 75. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

      Hella brand uses this relay design quite a bit, and yes you are correct. It is so you can power a pair of lights/accessories without having to splice them together.

    This is the exact video I needed for my install. My accessory is a set of air horns, which is the only difference (to your LED). I do have questions though. My air horn set includes 2 compressors and 2 relays.Q1. Can 1 relay feed both compressors?Q2. If I need to install both relays can I run 1 power wire and 1 ground wire then split them to feed each compressor?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on how much current your compressors are pulling you may be able to use a single relay, it needs to be less than 30 Amps for both compressors combined. If it's more then unfortunately you are stuck using two, or you can use a big HD relay like the one from another video of mine - th-cam.com/video/u-GXqTpICNM/w-d-xo.html For your second question, yes. Just be sure to use a heavy gauge wire. Thanks for watching!

    But when your wiring a car you dont just have 5-10 or more wires ran directly to the battery. Its typically alot neater than that but how is this achieved??? Through the use of bus bars?

    • @RockyXTV

      I'm a huge fan of using bus bars or battery terminal distribution blocks. I've also made my own waterproof switch boxes/enclosures (like an Spod) You're 100% correct that it would be much neater.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your relay should have numbers on its pins.
      PIN 87- to the accessory/light/etc. This wire should be the same size as whatever came with said accessory.
      PIN 30- to the positive on your battery. This wire should be the same or larger than the wire on your accessory.
      PIN 85- to negative of your battery or any ground.
      PIN 86- to your switch. This will send power from the switch to the relay coil to turn it on.
      *PINS 85 & 86 can actually be switched and work just fine. As long as one is a positive and one a negative. These wires can be small as they are only used to activate the coil in your relay, they pull very little power.
      *Relays can also be negative/ground triggered.
      I hope your answer was in there somewhere. Thanks for watching!

  • @ty6896

    So in the case of a light that goes out on a vehicle when something else turns on, is a 5 pin relay used for that? If so, how is that wired and what PIN numbers are used to turn a relay off when something turns on?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5 pin relay would be wire as such;
      Pin 30 = +Power IN
      Pin 87 = +Power OUT (when relay is ON)
      Pin 85 = -Ground/Negative
      Pin 86 = +Power from switch
      Pin 87A = +Power OUT (when relay is OFF)
      When wired up, Pin 87A will power whatever accessory hooked to it when the relay is OFF. Once the relay is turned ON, power is taken away from Pin 87A and given to Pin 87.
      I'm not sure if I answered your question, or if that even made sense. Thank you for watching!

    • @RockyXTV

      If you have power going to the relay, but not coming out of the relay it sounds like a bad relay. Try having someone turn the fog lights on while you stand near the relay. Listen for a click, if there's no click, then most likely the relay is bad.

  • @Greg65

    Conventional flow is pos to neg (the way circuits are drawn), but electron flow is neg to pos (the actual flow of the current through the wire).....therefore the ground wire should also be able to handle the current!

      I've never seen a relay numbered like that... I would think the pins would be in the same spots though, but I can't say this for sure. Honestly, I would get a different relay. How do you do it, to have a ground wire switch, rather than a power wire switch.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually pretty simple.
      Wire pins 30 & 87 just like in the video.
      Wire pin 86 to constant Power (+) instead of a switch, you can even make a jumper Wire and get the power from pin 30.
      Wire pin 85 to a switch like in the video, but using your Ground (-)
      Relays are very simple & can be used/wired in many different ways.
      Pins 85 & 86 are used to "activate" the relay. It doesn't matter if you give it constant Ground (85) & "trigger" it with Power (86) OR give it constant Power (86) & "trigger" it with Ground (85) It will work the same.
      I hope that all made sense. Thank you for watching!

      If you had the other pins wired as follows you would be fine. PIN 30=12V+ PIN 85=Ground then you would be able to use PIN 86 as the trigger/coil wire and PIN 87 would be a 12V+ Output. I hope that answers your question, thanks for watching!

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a "standard" way of wiring in a relay. This makes it so you can only turn on that relay if your key is on, and also can't accidentally leave it on. I like the ability to turn on my accessories whenever I want, that's why I wire pin 30 directly to battery power. I hope that makes sense.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know how many watts your light strips are? Here is a simple formula you can follow to figure out what size fuse you need.
      Watts divided by Volts = Amps (W/V=A) Example; you have a strip of lights that are rated at 65 Watts and your vehicle's operating voltage is 13.8 Volts. 65W / 13.8V = 4.71A. You would technically only need a 5 Amp fuse, but you want some wiggle room, in that scenario I would go with a 10-15A fuse. I hope that all makes sense, let me know if you need more help, thanks for watching!

    Thanks for this tutorial, but I'm a bit confused. Which cable goes to the - pole on the battery? or is that the chassis ground? Maybe this is a very stupid question but my knowledge about electricity is very basic and I know that to make an accessory work you have to connect it to the
    + and - from a power source.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no need to connect the - to the battery itself. Pin 85 on the relay can be connected to the battery ground if you wish, but it is normally just connected as a chassis ground. Thanks for watching!
