    Recently got a 450 for Father's day. These saws are impressive little beasts and with the 20 in. bars I can tackle up to a 32 in. round easily. Also with the Dremel and the new diamond bits I ordered from Amazon they eat though the log faster than 10 hungry beavers on a beech tree!

    Purchased my 1st Husqvarna saw yesterday AM. The 460 Rancher with the 24" bar. Planned to spend a few hours cutting rounds from the lower section of an old downed ash tree at a neighbor's house down the road. On my 4th cut the chain hit a metal object about 20" deep into cut. Bye bye sharp chain! Hopefully I can bring the chain back to life. Forgot to grab the necessary tools to sharpen this chain and grab an extra chain. A tad heartbreaking!
    Or maybe I should have grabbed 3 saws instead of 1! ......Well maybe some day.

    Boy, you weren't kidding when you said Black Locust is green! I bought a 1/2 face yesterday of Ash/Maple mix, to replace what 'Ive been burning. There are quite a few pieces of locust in there, too. Never seen it split like that in person before- it's quite striking, isn't it? An odd shade of greenish yellow.
    Utterly different from the Honey Locust I'm used to, which is hi-liter yellow with a reddish, honey brown center. I'd love to get a piece of that milled for table or counter tops- that'd look SHARP!
    I've found it relatively easy to differentiate between species of firewood. Once it's been identified. Oak has long coarse grain, with tiny spots or pores in it, while Maple has a very fine grain. When it's split- esp from dead standing, you get nice smooth surfaced pieces. It's rock hard, too and the pieces clink like chunks of ceramic when dry and knocked together. Ash also has long fibers, and darker stripes from the rings. When fresh split, it has a pleasant sour-sweet smell. It can split smooth like maple- or it can be kinda stringy. Wood ranges from very slight tan to butter colored. Green and black Ash are totally different, but I have yet to get any in my woodyard. The black is MUCH softer than the White Ash most of us know as "Ash". Beech is easy- if you have bark to look at. Otherwise, it's pretty similar to other off-white woods. It is heavy and dense, though so that can help. The smoothbark hickory (pignut) I have is easy: Shell-like bark, off white wood with a dark brown center, long stringy looking fibers, and it's smelly! Like sour mulch. I have 2 facecords of mixed green hickory, cherry and sugar maple drying on the patio, and when it gets wet, or the temp rises, you can really smell the hickory and cherry!

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris i watch you everyday, you work so hard, so simple man and sharing your experience. Thank you i learn a lot by you channel. I think you need to try a jacket with a "softshell" fabric, in single layer ( no lining) style. this is very breathable clothe and it really help to work wihout become wet. very simple clothe but very effective. With this jacket type, your body dries while you work. try it!

    Hi Chris, I love your Video's and attitude and the longer they are the better. Your like a fine tuned machine! I'm very impressed how everything is so well thought and carried out. I'm 73 years young at the present time and am no longer able to make firewood. It's great your being on TH-cam it brings back some really great memories. I worked in a now abandoned wood yard in southern Georgia for many years and cut, split and stacked a lot of wood. The only saws we ever used were Reds. I had 3-90 Reds I used, and was a great saw at the time! When you cut, it brings back memories of the great smell of fresh cut wood. Keep up the great work and keep the video's coming!

    Morning Chris, nice cutting’ I’ve thought that the log pile would be easier to cut if it was scattered around. Now, you have those cat-like reflexes , but for the rest of us, guys that are hesitant to get a truck load of logs, if they have the room, if the driver would place them randomly, cut around the perimeter getting the low hanging fruit, gather rounds, adjust logs keep cutting, seems pretty safe, not much of a chance for the log avalanche, Take care

I like the idea of them not wrapping around and less straping? TIA

    Impressive productivity, as always, and good explanation and reminders on your thought process.
    But I see another commenter also wondering if you really wear a cotton T shirt while you work?? If you do, you definitely need to upgrade your gear to wear a synthetic moisture wicking base layer under your fleece. I have used them along with other high quality gear to layer up or down based on my activity and wind/weather conditions. Your outer layers in the videos look to be good quality gear for cold weather work and hunting. But, if you wear cotton against your skin, you’re at risk of more than being sweaty and uncomfortable. Hypothermia can sneak up on you because your sweat can create a heat pump-like drain on your body temperature. Sweat trapped in your base layers returns to skin contact and your body expends energy and heat to drive it away, then the cycle repeats. Distance runners, cyclists, cross country skiers and all those actively working outdoors in the winter need gear that moves the moisture away from their skin. Hypothermia can create mental confusion and loss of balance…a dangerous combo when running a saw in the woods and walking around wood rounds and piles. Cathartt Force line of clothing works quite well as a sweat wicking base layer. As do most synthetic blend thermals.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only wear cotton in the summer, and I change often! In the winter I wear poly blend and synthetics as a base layer.

    • @canvasman2307
      @canvasman2307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InTheWoodyard I thought that was likely given the high quality of the outer garments you wear…Keen boots and what appears to Sleeping Indian guide series camo wool jacket. But I have a friend that complained about freezing on stand after hiking in wearing high end Browning parka and bibs. I asked about his base layers and found out they were old school cotton thermals and T shirt.
