But why wouldn't they double down. People who hate her will always hate her, you will always hate KK and Disney star wars, there is no decision she can make that will make you not hate her & DSW, so it's pointless for her to consider what you think of her or Disney star wars. Nobody in their right minds would try to please someone who cannot be pleased.
@@Dani-kq6qq Because for many who had read the old EU, there already have been plenty of badass ladies well before Rey came along, specifically *Mara Jade Skywalker* and the “Sword of The Jedi” herself, *Jaina Solo* . For those who read those novels or at the very least know of them know of the journey they went through, from where they started to where they would end up, there was lots and lots of character development for both of them. Especially for Jaina. She earned her abilities through simple hard work and through both her failures as well her successes. As such Jaina *earned* the audience’s respect. Rey on the other hand didn’t seem to earn anything and was a Mary Sue all across the three movies, where she was too perfect. It’s amazing LucasFilm hasn’t stopped to consider that most of the criticism was because Rey did not match up to that level of quality that Jaina did. Now, is it fair to compare both characters? Probably not. However, LucasFilm had an example to draw on in Jaina Solo. There was no reason why they couldn’t have crafted an overarching story that could match Jaina’s.
And that’s a great point. It will be very interesting to see how well the Mando movie actually does for box office success. Disney as well as all of the other streaming platforms are very creative in how they measure viewership. Hours of streaming but box office revenue is pretty telling.
Is everyone completely insane? Their is no plant to center three movies around Rey. The plan is to have her be the Obi Wan character with new protagonists. Of course that is the plan. How can people be so stupid not to see that. Everything Lucasfilm has said has pointed to that. But yet we get countless videos and posts pretending the exact opposite. That they are planning a Rey trilogy and how could they when they are not and never were.
Exactly.. it was never the Skywalker saga.. they slapped that on there in hopes to make the trilogy sell better. Same thing with the 3rd film being titled Rise of Skywalker
As surprising as it sounds, I think KK really doesn't fully understand how widespread resentment against her and her direction has been. I think she's surrounded herself with people to blow smoke and tell her that it's just small portion of old-school geeks that are unhappy. She probably sees herself as a fighter for the current and new generation of SW fans.
IS there a new generation of Star Wars fans? Do kids hang out at school talking about Star Wars? Are kids the ones buying the Lego sets? I honestly don’t know if it’s much on their radar. My impression is they’re mostly into gaming and anime but I’m not really in the know.
I don’t know about that. The massive decline in revenue and overall brand value ought to tell KK that’s it’s not just a small group of haters that are upset.

@Blisterdude123 Is almost irreversibly destorying a beloved franchise not a legacy? Just because it's a bad one, doesn't mean it's not what she'll be remembered for.
It's 100% safe to assume she had absolutely no contributions to the successful movies she produced in the past. She sucked up to George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and rode their coattails for decades, and that's the only reason she ever had a career in Hollywood.
Everyday that goes by, the decision to make Luke Skywalker a mystery box was the worst decision that Disney ever made, everything after is terrible too, but that really set everything in a direction
It was the mark of failure. In theory it made sense. You needed a new movie, a new mystery, a way to build hype for the next movie while also having enough room for the next writer to make something out of it. In fact most people was fully expecting the second movie to having a training arc for Rey and actually learn. Looking back there was a lot of interest and good will as everyone knew the movie wasn't that great, but they were interested in the future and were willing to cut them some slack. Instead we got the subversion mess that made things worse... and then doubling down on the mistakes rather than trying to improve what had worked.
Build hype for the next movie? You do know Star Wars 77 was a stand alone film right? So your theory is already incorrect. instead of concentrating on making a complete movie they went the lazy route and litter it with a bunch of unnecessary mysteries like it was a tv pilot. So now the sequel has to finish the story of the previous movie without having the opportunity to tell its own unique story. Luke was originally in episode 7 so Disney self sabotage itself. Also giving Luke an arc took away from the protagonist development. All problems with this trilogy leads to TFA establishing such a wacky foundation for this trilogy.
@@jeremyfields9009 I thought the comment was talking about 2015 force awakens. Not the 1997 original star wars movie. The 'why isn't he there' or 'what happened to him' or the 'what is he going to do in the next movie.' It is lazy writing for the sequal, but the whole goal is to produce hype, raise expectations, and set up a general profit model to be exploited. If they pull it off it works well, but obviously they failed to even meet basic ground level expectations or basic writing. Also they never planned on giving Rey a character development arc. They really haven't bothered giving any live action female characters a development arc since then. That is just bad writing and directors. (Yes even the live action shows are victim of this as Ashoka doesn't change, Sabine just gets a power up, Reva just walks across the void of space and gets instantly redeemed for not killing a child she planed to murder because Obi Wan might have cared about the child. Lack of character development for female characters as they all play the card board cut out with no personality is the new Lucas Film cookie cutter template.
@ I brought up the first Star Wars to remind u that you don’t need to turn your first film into a commercial for its sequel. That’s not how you start a trilogy. You start with a stand alone story and if it’s successful you expand on it. Lucas planned the first movie to be a coherent story with character development and a meaningful plot arc. So he's already two steps ahead of JJ Abrams. Then he planned a second movie that was based on the first, and continued the story and characters in a coherent and meaningful way, even as it tried out a few new things and retconned a few old things. So he's already two or three steps ahead of Rian Johnson. Then he planned a third movie that built on the first and the second, honoring the characters and plot development that had gone before, and finding a clear through-line that leads to a v satisfying and sensible climax. So he's already two or three steps ahead of JJ Abrams. Most successful movie franchises don't start out as a multi-movie master plan. Most of them take a successful standalone movie and find a character arc or plot development that can be continued in some meaningful way. Alien, Terminator, Back to the future, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix, etc all did this Disney had a 30+ road map on how to do this and they still failed.
Damage is already done and i don´t know, if they could get much attention with other topics, since seemingly most fans already have a negative attitude towards Star Wars . I would not expect much of the movies concerning production value. I would wonder, if it gets something different than relatively cheap movies.
So does Andor and Jedi 3 just don’t exist in arguments like this? Because this is exactly why I rightly condemn arguments like this as not just defeatist in nature but simple minded.
@@achaudhari101 the star wars jedi videogames are fun, but they are nowhere near the quality level and world building creativity of Kotor. Andor is a very well made show about character that nobody cares about and the plot is kinda boring and has nowhere to go, all in all just wasted talent imo. Also the general state of the franchise affects everything in the end, cant get excited about a videogame if I lost interest in the universe due to the direction it has taken.
@@achaudhari101andor and those Jedi games are soooo over glazed because everything else Star Wars does is shit so it shines like gold in comparison lol
Say what you will about the prequels, but they were amazing for world building, and the 1999-2008 era of Star Wars spawned some phenomenal non-film content. We got heaps of books and video games that all contributed to the lore, and you could take or leave them based on your personal preference. With Disney controlling the flow of content now, there are far fewer books and hardly any video games to pick from. I've started reading the Clone Wars Multimedia Project novels and Republic Commando and they're phenomenal. Throw in video games like KOTOR, KOTOR II, the battlefront games, republic commando, and the Jedi Knight games and we really had a golden era. I wish we could have something like that now.
1000% correct!! Look at all the great fan favorite characters from the prequels- dooku, grevious, quinlan vos, Rex, ashoka, asaj ventress, kannan ezra, to name a few. These are all characters that appear on multiple shows in different media which means we can't get enough of them. While the sequel had- poe, fin, rose, holdo, all characters that appeared once! And forgotten
@@Blisterdude123 Agreed. I recently snagged two of the Republic Omnibuses on eBay for heaps good deals and they’re incredible. Buying a comic on Saturday mornings at the grocery was a big staple of my childhood.
Serious question…does anyone know anybody who actually likes Rey or wants more Rey content? I’m not trying to be mean or anything but I honestly don’t know a single person. From talking with other Star Wars fans, I hear a lot of people asking for either, KOTOR (or content based on KOTOR/TOR characters), Darth Plagius content, T.Zhan Thrawn trilogy content and/or remaking Sequels…
Honestly, I kind of like Rey because I find Daisy Ridley charming as an actor. I think the Mary Sue criticisms are pretty valid, but I still kind of like Rey. That said, I’m not really interested in trilogy about her…
I've said it before, but I think it's high time Disney went back to "Legends" lore. Make movies, games, and other content set in the old EU. That content doesn't upset the current Disney canon, and gives old school fans content they really want.
3 problems with that plan. 1) It is them admitting defeat. 2) They might owe the people who made some of the Legends royalty fees. 3) It means they can not make bad knock off versions of those stories as 'totally original Disney ideas'
So long as they mostly stick to the established lore behind the stories they use. Most of these so called "writer/directors" are not qualified writers and tend to botch many build ups.
I would only watch a Rey movie if it was a retcon eliminating the sequels - where she never met any of the Lucas characters and has an interesting new adventure unsullied by the failed movies.
I may be 100% wrong, but these are the facts as I think we know them: -Multiple Lucasfilm projects have had to have massive rewrites/reshoots before release -Multiple Lucasfilm.projects have been announced, and had writers/directors tied to them, and then those people abandon the project citing "creative differences" (including some of those rewrite/reshoot projects). The only constant among all these projects is Kathleen Kennedy. Now I realize that being a failure is not a dealbreaker in the corporate world, but has there been a bigger failure in the movie production world than Lucasfilm, since moving to Disney? How does someone keep getting paid so much, to fail so hard?
How they can get back the trust? Just go on stage and say „Yes! We fucked up! We did many things wrong and we have to accept it! BUT! We want to be better! And we want to start here!“
5:15 this is the absolute truth. There’s no other reasoning. Like ahsoka is Dave filoni’s favorite child. Rey is Kennedy’s. This is a battle she’s willing to die for. And i for one will be excited to see the bloodshed 😂
Most of the casual audience doesn't care about Star Wars anymore and with people being more picky about what movies they go see these days it doesn't bode well for SW.
That’s not really entirely true. If the next SW stuff like Skeleton Crew, Andor S2, and Mando movie come out and are praised, there will be that kindling of interest again.
I didn't care about Casian Andor until I watched Andor. Now, I still don't really care about Casian, but I do care very much about season 2. Then again, no one's counting on that character to carry the entire franchise forward.
It's feels like hardcore's don't have an interest in Disney star wars. Normies might go and see it but will probably wait for reviews at this time. And those that do seem to enjoy it don't actually seem to be watching it (if the numbers are to be believed) they just seem to enjoy getting into culture war arguments online and feeling morally superior to others.
There is a report out now that Disney refers to Star Wars as a legacy brand now. Mando movie will happen because Favero is driving it, but that's about all we are going to get.
It should have been so easy to pass the torch and honor Lucas and his characters. To use Basketball terminology, it should have been an easy layup. Luke only needed to be wise and kind as a teacher, and to be Luke. He needed to train Jedi and pass on what he had learned. He didn't even need to be the super hero Luke of the EU, just Luke.
If rey was a well written character people would like her. Sadly she's not well written at all. Trilogy won't make her better character the damage is done disney needs to cut their losses and move on.
Kathleen Kennedy is either the densest person in the world or the most stubborn. I don't know how anybody can be so stupid as to avoid profits without intending to avoid profits.
Considering that Lucasfilm just threw an MCU movie budget at the untested, inexperienced crew of The Acolyte, no it is NOT a surprise that ceo Kennedy is determined to bet the farm on this gamble. It is very apparent that ceo wants to turn sw into Barbie 2.0 ip.
Thanks Thor. Feels like Rey is KK's self insert, so these announcements are hardly surprising. While Disney owns the IP, and the SMT is the same, I don't expect SW to markedly improve.
Rethink your mindset before saying stupid stuff like that. It sounds like Fandom Menace logic which is no different than what Kennedy wants for the franchise.
@@achaudhari101It's not stupid just because you don't comprehend it, Alex. This is KK's true legacy, the creation of the anti-fandom. They're still getting enjoyment out of Star wars, just not in the way that's intended. 😆
Wookie show. BAM! Make a show with Wookiees…no talking other than Wookiee grunts. No subtitles. Just a quality show that tells you what’s going on by emotion and great physical acting.
KK isn’t gonna be satisfied with going out on a high note, she wants to leave saying “told ya so”, while making sure her foul scent permeates everything that comes after she’s gone.
There's enough material from Disney that could create a whole Mandalore trilogy, which could run in parallel with OT and never go near the Disney trilogy. The next big trilogy in my book is the Andor/Rogue One arc which is the only thing that I have high expectations for.
Remember how Joker 2 recently released theatrically, and was a colossal box office bomb? With a huge $200M+ budget, Joker 2 could not even break $60M domestically, and Warner Bros. is going to lose hundreds of Millions of dollars off the film. This, coming off of the first Joker film which was a huge Billion dollar blockbuster. My point with this is, if Disney moves forward with a Rey movie - or God forbid, a trilogy - I really think the Rey movie would also bomb just as badly as Joker 2 for Disney and would also lose them hundreds of Millions. So personally, I hope they DO move forward with a Rey movie! Yes! Give us a whole Rey trilogy, Disney!!
I’m a 55 year old chap. I came to Star Wars ,when it was called that , as a nine year old boy I was very excited about the sequels. I remember reading that George had ideas for nine movies. He later denied that I think? But I was keen to know what came next Let’s just say I was disappointed I’m not sure what Disney wants to do with this franchise? When they make something that’s aimed at people like me ( be that nerds or 55 year olds or men?) they seem to make good product. Mando and Andor for example. When they make something for some other group it doesn’t seem to come together so well. Book of Boba Fett ( I waited forty bloody years for that!), or Obi -Wan Kenobi. Badly written and awfully directed I get why they do it. I just don’t understand why it’s so bad. I fully appreciate that a story written for teenagers or young adults is not necessarily going to resonate with me. But Rebels was written primarily for young adults and I enjoyed that for the most part. But couldn’t finish Asoka. It was silly Perhaps Disney should stick to making stuff for me
It actually was 12 episodes and 3 spinoffs for a total number of 15. Then he whittled it down to 9. I think one of the films was the origins of the Jedi and Sith, the other two were a Wookiee movie and a R2-D2 and C-3PO origin movie. Luke's story originally was going to take two trilogies to tell. Ultimately all that got made was the middle part the OT and the prequel films. I guess you can call that compression since Luke's story was cut down into 3 films. Obi-Wan's story was cut into 3 parts along with Anakin. The Droid origin was moved to the prequel. A lot of the second sequel trilogy was moved into ROTJ, in the second Saga Luke was supposed to meet his sister and confront the Emperor. Originally, Luke would have defeated Vader in the third of the first trilogy. And Luke's sister was not Leia.
@ Hi, thanks for the reply I actually didn’t know there was that many movies in his head. Goes to show how difficult it is to get an idea into a movie. What if Lucas just wrote books? ROTJ is my least favourite of the originals. Maybe because it’s a mash up of the other stories you said about. But I do love how a farm boy walks into the fortress and confronts the two most dangerous creatures in the galaxy
Hey Thor, do you think doubling down on Rey could be similar to the “Whaling” we see so much in the games industry? I’ve met some people that genuinely love Rey and the sequel trilogy and talking with them, it strikes me that they’re the kind of fans that will watch and love anything, so long as it’s their favourite franchise. They will watch it and any new thing relentlessly, spend obscene amounts of money on the merchandise, and happily pay to keep drinking the blue milk. Could this all be Lucasfilm trying to cater to and find more of them?
The Character of Rey has been indelibly sullied by previous horrible script teams, the REAL question is if Disney have the knowledge or bravery to get together a group of writers who can actually put a coherent story onto paper! I think Rey is blown as a character unfortunately, there's ALWAYS possibilities with new characters but they chose to waste pretty much all of them.
I agree, I think the criticism of the sequels could push Disney to ‘correct’ them in the same way Disney has tried to ‘correct’ the prequels by incorporating aspects of them in new product.
“Disney bought a massive ip a little more than a decade ago. Your Sequel Trilogy made less money each movie. You’ve also lost literal hundreds of millions on Disney Plus shows. Seemingly More projects have been cancelled then released. Many people point towards the lack of planning, too much oversight over writers, Poor and incoherent story telling, and the defamation of the Original story and characters George wrote. Will Star Wars change course?” Kk *Nervous chuckle “Nooooo”
Hey Thor, thank you for the awesome content, it is always a highlight when a new video comes out. I genuinely enjoy listening to your unbiased and thoughtful commentary and I think this makes your channel truly special and outstanding in this polarized era of Star Wars fandom. After last week's Yaddle video, I am really curious to hear your thoughts about this: Do you think that Dooku was ever a true Sith Lord under the Rule of Two and was he planning to overthrow Palpatine at some point? If so, his ultimate plan surely must have been to eventually betray Palpatine and usurp the title of Sith Master for himself. He had ample opportunity to do this during the Clone Wars, all he had to do was send a simple message to the Jedi via unofficial channels that 'Palpatine is the Sith Lord you have been looking for, please investigate' and maybe send some secretly recorded holos of Darth Sidious to confirm this. We know he was capable of such a feat, because he contacted Yoda to arrange a potential peace agreement during the events of the Dark Rendezvous book. Should the Jedi have been informed before Palpatine had the chance to trigger Order 66, he might very well have been arrested or executed, removing him from Dooku's path to ultimate power. If Palpatine had had the chance to trigger Order 66 anyway, that would have been even better, as Dooku would have had to deal with the Jedi at some point. This would have turned his two main obstacles (his master and the Jedi) against each other. Furthermore, Dooku knew that the CIS was never actually intended to win the Clone Wars because Palpatine was manipulating both sides to prevent either faction from overwhelming the other. With Palpatine removed, Dooku would have been able to take control of the CIS forces for good and wage a total war on the Republic without any meddling or inhibition from Palpatine. Given how precarious the Republic's position was for most of the Clone Wars, there could have been at least a real chance for a CIS victory with Palpatine removed. In short, I don't see why Dooku could not have betrayed Palpatine and taken advantage of the confusion to lead the CIS to complete victory over the Republic and install himself as the new galactic leader. I'm curious to hear what you think. Thank you again for the awesome videos and please keep up the good work 🙂
Icons arent made, icons happen not due to market analysize but through love of what you make AND the audience latch on to the character. Look at Luke, Han and Leia, Chewie, 3PO, R2, Wolverine, Iron Man, Ripley. Those didnt happen cause an executive wills it, but through dedication from the writer, director, actor and audience response, if that makes sense...
I can't help but think how much better Jynn Erso from Rogue One and the Emilia Clarke one from Solo were. But post-ROTJ we still have a big gap that could be filled with Mandoverse offshoots like a Thrawn trilogy. Kind of wish they weren't doing the Mando/Grogu movie so it could be rolled into a trilogy. And we need a lovable team. We didn't get a good team with the sequel trilogy, and now thanks to the Mandoverse we've got a lot of candidates for a decent squad.
I absolutely have no interest in watching anything done, by Lucasfilm, under KK. I don't even care if it's good. All of Disney Star Wars should be swept aside. If they want me to pay attention to and care about Star Wars going forward, then they'd have to fire KK and Filoni, et al, and put Jon Favreau in charge of the whole thing. Favreau has had actual success with the Mandalorian; KK has done nothing but poop on the Mandalorian, and Star Wars at large. Now they want to push a new series of Rey movies out? I think this is just a case of 'Let's give the stupid shareholders something to chew on before canceling it after we get a stock bump!'. KK's got it in her tiny brain that because the sequels trilogy made money, then it must have also been good. Instead of the actual fact that the sequels trilogy made money because they were the first new Star Wars movies in years.
You are exactly right. KK doesn't care if a film or show is good as long as it makes money. SW fans still hate watch everything that comes out i.e. The Acolyte, so it still makes money even if people don't like it.
I think people are missing the fact that in the modern streaming era where we are used to watching movies at home, familiarity in and of itself is no longer necessarily a good thing. Audiences are now using their knowledge, their familiarity with particular films to decide whether or not to go to the theaters to watch them. I think you’re gonna have a better chance to get butts in movie theater seats with unfamiliar Star Wars characters.
It's just sad that Lucasfilm sees Rey as their most valuable IP, and therefore they must make more movies centered around her. Just make good movies, guys. It takes more than spreadsheets and market research to make good films that people want to watch. Star Wars should broaden its horizons, not give us more of the same.
Hey Thor, while I agree Rey is a damaged character when it comes to the fandom, if I was tasked with saving this character, I would drop the Skywalker name and have her embrace her true family name of Palpatine. I would use her a vessel to explore the emperor's origins, along with the wake of destruction left behind by his reign over the galaxy. I'd make Darth Plagueis the villain and have him going after her for revenge against the apprentice that tried to kill him. Along her journey I'd have Rey meet up with an elderly and battered Mace Windu and make him her mentor. There's a lot that can be bounced off of these characters with their histories and a good bit of hand waving that will have to be done regarding episodes 7-9. In the end it would be a relatively simple story about a girl/princess on the run learning about her family history and then having to decide whether to embrace the legacy of her family or forge a new destiny with Plagueis striking from the shadows killing off characters along the way beating Rey once or twice leaving her almost dead each time until she finally embraces a righteous path and stands up against evil.
I just can't understand. I am literally incapable of understanding. Just the business aspect of it is just foolish. Fine, make another whole trilogy that MIGHT just break even
The problem with moving way forward in the timeline is the canon still sucks. Why would I watch stories in a horrible story canon even if it's far in the future. It's not for me as a Star Wars fan but I'm happy for any fans that are interested still that they are getting whatever this is supposed to be. I'll stick to the EU and Hope for the suits to eventually Force a second canon reboot to move the sequels and acolyte from the canon.
Hey Thor, I’m wondering what you would think about Disney pulling a Star Trek and just create an alternate timeline for a series of movies after ROTJ. Essentially, it would faithfully adapt the “Legends” source material continuing the story from the OT into the EU. Everyone would be recast. Except for 3PO or whoever would look and/or sound like they did in ROTJ. There could be an in-universe explanation or it could simply be an announcement that the “Legends” are being adapted. This solves a lot of problems in my view. We can finally see our heroes as we knew them to be. There would be characters and stories that we’ve never seen on screen. I think it could really revive things. Yes, the original actors time will have passed. They would have to find excellent actors to fill all the lead roles. Not just lookalikes but talented performers. Some viewers may not be interested; however, it would give them back all the characters they have killed off or ruined and it would avoid the new characters who are unpopular. Perhaps this would only happen if all else fails. It excites me though.
Someone my partner works with posted on social media she's going to a SW themed xmas party dressed as Rey - never seen a single Star Wars film - Rey just looks cool to her. I think (sadly) that about sums up that character's legacy, whether they do more movies or not.
At any cost, Kathleen Kennedy wants to make a female character at the level of Luke and Anakin. The Rey character is a bust. Maybe we will have to stomach one more lousy movie, and Disney will move on from the Rey push.
hey Thor, you may have talked about this already but I was curious to know how star wars is supposed to deliver it's messages (moral ones, life lessons and other types) if we consider George Luca's movies to be the standard? It had appeared to me that star wars -with it's characters , setting and others elements - is meant to be a shadow of real life instead of it's reflection given how a lot of the things is kept slightly ambiguous and simple without Lucas sneaking in his own political ideals and specific values (The Jedi for example who are defined by their unconditional selflessness and compassion before anything). What I mean by this is that the audience isn't supposed to be preached on to follow a single specific worldview, but rather interpret the elements and events journey of a character and relate them to their personal struggles, values and experiences to make sense of them. To learn, re-evaluate and even implement their personal philosophy as they have seen their favourite hero do and avoid being like the ones who fall. The original trilogy can be interpreted in more than one ways such as being a story of undying hope, a boy becoming a man, triumph of love (Luke's love of his dad) etc. This probably should be the case with fiction other than just star wars but in Luca's movies this approach feels more pronounced. But nowadays it seems the opposite is happening with star wars and other stories of other franchises which is causing more and more content to be so sharply divisive. The writers recently literally seem to be going "my side good, other side bad, disagree if you're a sick monster" , Where they should be teaching audiences that deep down regardless of the differences in our approach towards life, all of humanity believes in some certain things which must be upheld and valued and without them we shall all fall. They should build bridges, not tear them down. I remember your reaction to one of the actors of andor saying something like that it will show Donald trump's style of rule through the empire and where you did not agree with manner of comparison to share ones thoughts. While an actor is free to have their own views, but should the creators and show runners not have their content welcoming for anyone? I hope I could get my point across clearly . English is not my first language. I would love to hear your view on this matter if you already haven't spoken about it. Love your stuff and hope you so well. may the Force be with you.
I just them want to release something, anything to the big screen at this point. Rey movie could be great - won’t mean much if it gets indefinitely delayed and then canceled.
I 💯 agree with you, Thor. KK is going to make this happen NO MATTER WHAT! Come hell or high water (never understood that reference) we are getting a Rey trilogy
Hey Thor, I fell like making Ben Solo a only child was another failing from the ST that doesn't get talked about enough. Once Luke, Leia and Ben died in the ST the Skywalker line was wiped out. I feel like Rey taking the Skywalker name at the end of TROS was in a way an acknowledgement that they stuffed up there even though many fans will never accept Rey as a Skywalker. Would you have given Ben siblings?
It is wild that they’re still going to make movies with Rey. I don’t think the majority of people are going to even give it a chance. Ol Kathleen has driven Star Wars to the point that even good shows like Andor don’t get any actual viewership. When you’ve reached the point that good word of mouth does nothing, you’re in trouble.
Who SHOULD Star Wars base its future on? I would have no problem with one of her prodigies becoming THE Jedi, with Rey being their mentor. If we're time jumping 15 years for the first installment, it is not out of the realm of possibility that an even more affluent Force user enter the fray. I love the character of Rey. The only problem with said character is that she discovered her powers right around the same age as the legend, himself, Luke Skywalker. She has lineage, and she has heart. I have no problem with Star Wars moving forward with Rey.
The one to blame are the shareholders and CEOs who refuse to fire Kathleen. She's just doing her job. Make as much money and get as much power for herself as she can. And getting her patented Mara Jade lite character to be the focus of another trilogy would do that. The ones we need to blame are the shareholders and CEOs who keep renewing her contract. And love "sticking it to the fans." Same way we need to blame them for JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson. People need to stop focusing on these people and follow the money to their boss. We don't blame a project/middle manager in a company when something goes wrong. You go to the CEO and grill them.
I think the script quality, I.e. the writers ability to write a great story that is also on canon. The last trilogy was a mess because of story/writing inconsistency. I think the character would be fine inside of a great story.
Since Disney is interested in $$$ besides the movies how much demand is there for Rey merch or for any of the last 3 Star Wars episodes? How does it compare for the demand for episodes 4, 5, & 6? That should be the strongest argument that the character has little to no following or interest from the public.
The only way I can see Star Wars truly coming back is if they have their own “Into the Spiderverse” type film/show where it’s something entirely different and new but honors what came before. There needs to be a push not to just satisfy old fans but bring in a lot of new fans. The only way I can see that happening is if they move on from the Skywalker Saga and make something new. I’d rather not have them take an MCU approach to building this hypothetical new era, if they want spin-offs they have to be an additional enjoyment to the main story but not a requirement to enjoy the main story like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
The only character from the sequel trilogy that fans genuinely got hooked on and wanted more from, was Kylo. Rey was never anyone’s favorite, if anything they just liked her with Kylo not to see her on adventures she’s just not interesting she’s a passive character that is given everything and has practically no flaws.
I don’t understand how they can get a Rey movie when they didn’t even have a script yet. Even the actor for Rey didn’t have a script for the movie. I think she said that at one point, I could be wrong thro. The Rey movie will just be like all the other Star Wars movies or projects that were supposed to happen but didn’t happen and got canceled. Which Disney had done before where they will announce something and was supposed to happen but didn’t happen at all. Or the director for a Star Wars movie or project leaves. This has been happening since Disney has had Star Wars. There are other things they could be doing that isn’t a rey movie, many people already don’t like the character because of how Disney wrote the character in the sequel films. Now there’s like reports of a new trilogy for Star Wars, they just won’t quit will that. It probably won’t end well for them. Just look at the projects for Star Wars like books, games, movies, merchandise, comics, and tv shows and tell me how many have succeeded since Disney has own Star Wars. Star Wars isn’t in a good place right now including interest in the franchise as well. Disney has been lose money on Star Wars because of certain decisions they make. I think there was at one point a Star Wars hotel that Disney had but shut down. The cancelled projects include the Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron movie, The cancelled David Benioff and DB Weiss Star Wars trilogy, who can forget The cancelled Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy that was supposed to happen, The cancelled Kevin Feige Star Wars movie, The cancelled JD Dillard Star Wars movie, and Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is supposedly on “indefinite hold”. There’s probably more as well that I’m forget and didn’t mention. As for me, I’m still a Star Wars fan as a 27 year old but I’ve been losing interest in the franchise because of Disney and Star Wars episode 8 and episode 9 which I despise for a variety of reasons.
Heyy Thor i was thinking maybe some day we will get content of the old republic (i know is very unlikely), do you think instead of starting with big sharks like Revan we could get a show of Zayne? I feel he is a character that many people can relate and his story is pretty cool, what would you like to see of content in the old republic era, if it ever happens?
The Problem is we only hear about the REY-MOVIE and the REY-TRILOGY, but we have no idea what is actually behind it. What is the story? Where is this going?
A single Rey movie could have its place; have her meet Mara Jade, Luke's child and other survivors of Kyle's purge. You don't need to kill off Rey, but I would like the extinction of the real Skywalker line to be retconed. Rey's involvement seems necessary as a bridge
I think it would be worth suggesting that you make a video comparing Acolyte to Arcane. Both series have a similar idea behind them, but Acolyte is forgotten by most people and Arcane is considered a masterpiece.
To be fair, I never had a problem with Rey. I just think she was a wasted opportunity. I liked what was set up for her in TFA (Mary Sue-ness aside) - but then Last Jedi and RoS just trashed all of that potential and mystery and turned her even more one note. And I have no problem with Daisy Ridley's performance either. I don't really care about a Rey trilogy, but I'm hopeful that if they do make one, it ends up making her a worthwhile character (as the second question you addressed pointed out).
This is further confirmation that Disney has no plan whatsoever. Basically, their rationale is which bankable actor/actress can we use as a "vehicle" for future STAR WARS movies, as if they could carry the whole picture(s)? The concept itself is flawed and should never be employed in a STAR WARS movie, which is arguably at its best when there is sequential, multiple character development as there was with Luke, Han, Leia, and Darth Vader, and then Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme and Palpatine. They started out with promise with Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe, but it fell apart, and they are better off with a completely new slate. Rey has had her time. Now, her time is done, and my movie ticket purchasing/enthusiasm for any future STAR WARS movie (if it ever comes) will reflect this. And I am not alone with this viewpoint across the fanbase. So, Disney, you have a flop, or multiple flops, in waiting. Your choice, Disney. Your choice to ride with Kathleen, or do the resourceful thing by liquidating her.
Hey Thor, Do you think the Sequel Trilogy would have been stronger if it took place over a longer period of time, and started Finn, Rey, and Kylo at significantly younger ages? (Like 15, ending TRoS at 19/20 y/o) I recently watched The Force Awakens again, and I realized that all these characters act like teenagers, and that'd be so much less jarring if, ya know, they WERE teenagers.
if they go down this route, there is a 0% chance it's based on business interests. we all know the interest just isn't there, so it would have to boil down to an emotional and/or ideological content decision
Do they have a choice? What other character can they use going forward? The Prequels tie into the OT because you want to see how things went downhill, there is a Skywalker (Anakin), Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine. How will anything tie into a trilogy after the sequel trilogy? I don't care about any of the new characters.
I have no faith that new canon can be fixed. The sequels are irredeemable. And they force everything that occurs between the OG movies to conform to fit them. You have to scrap the sequels. That's the only way new canon can be saved. Mando, Andor, Bad Batch, Ahsoka, they've been good and there's a good foundation to build on. Use that. Give us a new sequel trilogy built off of the Thrawn and Imperial Remant story. Let Luke reestablish the Jedi. Let the Jedi be good guys again. Most important: stop this stupid modern trend of trying to say the Jedi are actually the bad guys and to blame for everything. It's like blaming doctors during a pandemic. Even if they fail, they were still trying to do the right thing. The Jedi are the good guys. Period.
hey thor if they actualy make a trilogy to continue rey story i think the best move is make her the antagonist so that the fans who hate her could chare and the ones that love her for some reason could wonder what could happen?
KK’s constant doubling down is the same as “The beatings will continue until morale improves.” “You WILL consume this product because I said so!”
To quote a certain Captain,
“No. No I don’t think I will.”
Nailed it!
Actually no I won’t. Haven’t even watched the last film and don’t intend to.

I'm not even entirely sold on this Mando movie, much less another 3 movies about "Rey Skywalker"

The 'why isn't he there' or 'what happened to him' or the 'what is he going to do in the next movie.'
It is lazy writing for the sequal, but the whole goal is to produce hype, raise expectations, and set up a general profit model to be exploited.
Alien, Terminator, Back to the future, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix, etc all did this
Disney had a 30+ road map on how to do this and they still failed.
The damage is already done, because I, like many others, just can’t bring myself to care anymore.
Damage is already done and i don´t know, if they could get much attention with other topics, since seemingly most fans already have a negative attitude towards Star Wars . I would not expect much of the movies concerning production value. I would wonder, if it gets something different than relatively cheap movies.

@@achaudhari101 the star wars jedi videogames are fun, but they are nowhere near the quality level and world building creativity of Kotor. Andor is a very well made show about character that nobody cares about and the plot is kinda boring and has nowhere to go, all in all just wasted talent imo.

Those are the same conditions I would require.

I may be 100% wrong, but these are the facts as I think we know them:
-Multiple Lucasfilm projects have had to have massive rewrites/reshoots before release
-Multiple Lucasfilm.projects have been announced, and had writers/directors tied to them, and then those people abandon the project citing "creative differences" (including some of those rewrite/reshoot projects).
If they’re really serious about this then I have no hope for the future of Star Wars
I doubt it based on recent events.
How they can get back the trust? Just go on stage and say „Yes! We fucked up! We did many things wrong and we have to accept it! BUT! We want to be better! And we want to start here!“

I came to Star Wars ,when it was called that , as a nine year old boy
I was very excited about the sequels. I remember reading that George had ideas for nine movies. He later denied that I think? But I was keen to know what came next
Let’s just say I was disappointed
I’m not sure what Disney wants to do with this franchise? When they make something that’s aimed at people like me ( be that nerds or 55 year olds or men?) they seem to make good product. Mando and Andor for example. When they make something for some other group it doesn’t seem to come together so well. Book of Boba Fett ( I waited forty bloody years for that!), or Obi -Wan Kenobi. Badly written and awfully directed
I get why they do it. I just don’t understand why it’s so bad.
I fully appreciate that a story written for teenagers or young adults is not necessarily going to resonate with me. But Rebels was written primarily for young adults and I enjoyed that for the most part. But couldn’t finish Asoka. It was silly
Perhaps Disney should stick to making stuff for me
It actually was 12 episodes and 3 spinoffs for a total number of 15.

Rey, Rey go away. Come not again another day!

Thank you again for the awesome videos and please keep up the good work 🙂
I think It time to introduce the star killer sagas
As Rick would say.
Death
What kind?
Instant.
They've ALREADY delayed the one they've just announced lmao
Darth Kennedy mission accomplished
All I want at this point is evidence that the studio actually cares about quality production and honoring the franchise
Maybe we will have to stomach one more lousy movie, and Disney will move on from the Rey push.
hey Thor,
you may have talked about this already but I was curious to know how star wars is supposed to deliver it's messages (moral ones, life lessons and other types) if we consider George Luca's movies to be the standard?
Love your stuff and hope you so well. may the Force be with you.
you're correctly describing how a person relates to a piece of Art. Disney does not, can not and will not ever make Art.
I am missing the days when star wars had a soul. say whatever you will about the prequel, it is evident that Lucas made them out of love.
I think the magic 8 ball is making the decisions
I’d rather not have them take an MCU approach to building this hypothetical new era, if they want spin-offs they have to be an additional enjoyment to the main story but not a requirement to enjoy the main story like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
to bet on something you have to have a hope of a small chance of success. Cancelling a movie years in advance, is retreat and a lack of resolve.
The seeming attention to - and changing content based on - fan reactions is one of the most baffling aspect of Disney’s handling of SW.
You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results...
I'm also not interested in any more Rey movies but I will say Daisy Ridley is absolutely fetching and I would like to see more of her.
Hey Thor,
Do you think the Sequel Trilogy would have been stronger if it took place over a longer period of time, and started Finn, Rey, and Kylo at significantly younger ages? (Like 15, ending TRoS at 19/20 y/o)
I recently watched The Force Awakens again, and I realized that all these characters act like teenagers, and that'd be so much less jarring if, ya know, they WERE teenagers.
if they go down this route, there is a 0% chance it's based on business interests. we all know the interest just isn't there, so it would have to boil down to an emotional and/or ideological content decision
She’s a Rey of hope for this mega-blockbuster hit movie franchise. A New Hope, you might say…
