This completes my DBZ Vegeta themes. I covered it in my Vegeta Medley, but like the version of Hells Bells I did in that Medley, it was in a different key. It was time for me to do the standalone version. Now... how in the world was I going to be able to improve one of the best tracks in all of DBZ? Well, it took me longer than I thought it would to figure it out, especially since the original is only 1 minute and 13 seconds long. How does one extend it without losing the magic of the melody? I tried a few things but eventually I decided to start it as it does in the anime, then explore the ending with the low synth that trails off. From there, I wanted to know where it would go next if it kept going, and I came up with a new section that I felt represented Vegeta's character at this point in time- being the first time he transformed into a Super Saiyan (which also applies to the first, first time when he was training in space). He wasn't exactly a good guy, in fact, despite helping the Z fighters with the androids he seemed morally ambiguous, not quite the heroic person we know him as today. That darkness, still driving his ambitions- I wanted a hint of that in the bridge of this track. Then we return to the piano, which I think at this point, is as much his instrument as the bells are. They both are associated with classical, royalty. Anyway enough from me, please enjoy!!

I don’t usually get to hear someone melodically embellish themes THEIR OWN WAY to elevate the theme beyond its original concept. It’s how I would want to rearrange all sorts of songs. This feels like one of the rare times I’ve actually heard it happening from someone else. Thank you for making and sharing this!
That’s an awesome compliment! Sounds like you’re a musician too. That’s one of my favorite parts of making these covers- being able to make them my own by extending parts, embellishing, exploring more of the potential inside of the music (some of these pieces aren’t very long, less than a minute sometimes, so there’s often plenty of room to discover where else it could go). It certainly helps that the originals are so good already; it just makes what I’m doing with them that much more fun!! You’re welcome, thanks for listening and commenting! 😊

I’ve said before that the originals were so good, limited only by technology of the time, but even so, they had such a unique sounding production that made them unmistakably recognisable. I think musically they were ahead of their time, and maybe even in a league of their own.

Coming back to put some respect on this piece, I feel my 3 whole amazingly long sentences totally did this song justice(absolutely sarcasm, I didn't give you the Ioannis Review you so clearly enjoy.)
Starting off, the classic piano with the almost horror sound effects playing along it almost feel like a nightmare, to be honest. If you think back to this Vegeta, he is not a good guy. Don't get me wrong, he sided to kill Freeza both times we saw him, and he was eager to help defend Earth, but that was not a benevolent action. It was animalistic self preservation, an understanding that if Namek or Earth blows up because Freeza willed it, Vegeta is gone. And as far as training to reach the mythical status of The Legendary Saiyan Warrior, this was merely a means to an end to beat the Androids that would soon be planning to take the place he currently resided from him. Sure, the prince later becomes a far more exemplary guardian of Earth and the many friends he makes, but this is before that time, where now, arguably, should he beat the Androids, and he has the desire to, who would stop him from completing what the Saiyan Invasion started? Goku has the heart virus, and it takes him a while to recover. Piccolo is close in power, but undoubtedly the Saiyan Prince is a superior fighter and strategist, and would overwhelm the Namekian he shares a fascinating number of traits with. The humans are all but cannon fodder for Super Saiyan Vegeta at this stage, as he was far above them at base before his gold locks, and now he is more than just godlike, far surpassing these measly Earthlings. That gives me feelings that, should Vegeta win, Earth might be doomed if he couldn't be convinced to recognize that his team was that of who was beside and behind him when he took on the Androids.
Back to the song, the classic Gladius Choir is here, really making it feel like a truly transcendent power is beginning to be unleashed, and the faithful remix with newer instrumentation takes over, here with it truly feeling like a remake. Then, 1:18, you are one of the poor metalic abominable sons of bitches, gawking at this shining golden god, mouths agape and hearts seized with terror as he stood there, grinning, and you could feel something within you, programmed by Gero, sink down as far as it could within you, knowing you weren't going to see the conquest of Earth.
I love the part where we can see you play piano. It reminds me a bit of your Behind The Scenes Pikkon video, but more of a "Hey, this part is COMPLEX complex. Like, you can't play it alone, complex." that really adds to the visuals, as well as your Vegeta looking immaculate as well, and it really makes the visuals feel quite well put together, as while it's a primarily auditory experience, you wanted to make sure your eyes had something to feast on as well.
I really like this transformation, not from a writing or mechanical angle, but for the weight it has for the story. It makes it truly feel, at the moment in time, that Goku isn't this absolutely unmatchable god. I mean, they had to get rid of him with a virus, but the bad guys won't win, not if he's still alive, right? No, because Vegeta's there. No, because Goku isn't at an unobtainable power level. No, because enemies CAN GET THAT STRONG, NOW. Before, Super Saiyan, in all of its glory, could really trap and fuck over a less experienced and seasoned writer. I mean, Goku had grasped the Ultimate Transformation his race could attain, and he stomped Freeza into the dirt. And while someone could point to Trunks, I would counter with the simple "but what did Trunks experience that got him there?" because who had really been at Goku's power and been at his situation before? Vegeta hadn't, he had been close to his power, and maybe you could argue that his trauma, his constantly challenged pride and his arrival at death's door would've been the catalyst had he been Goku's equal in power. One could make a case, too, for Gohan, but again, he was not powerful enough yet, and though he had been through awful mental rigors by this point, I don't know if they would've sunk in deep enough to make this enable his transformation. So who would achieve this like Goku?
This transformation made Super Saiyan more interesting. You had to undergo something deep, terrifying, and very against your baseline nature. Goku had to be beaten, basically, and where he failed, he lost a friend, a close one at that, who had been, for the most part, there since the beginning, going against Goku being this monster who had, to this point, always managed to skirt around consequence that he suddenly goes smack dab against, with no funny tricks, no Dragon Balls he's aware of to bring his lost friend back. Trunks, we learn later, lost the only father figure he had to machines he could barely duel, and could certainly never touch in a tag team match, and he broke knowing his weakness had barred him from doing and being more, realizing that how he was now, full of moxie and a desire to make it up to his fallen predecessors, would not match the raw power on display, as it taught him that mere willpower would not be enough. Gohan had to, later on, be beyond saving, have no hope on it's way and be staring death down, face to face, practically nose to nose before he broke. And then again, when he fought Cell, he had to do it again, arguably worse because Cell had been proving his might had no equal at that time, and so failure didn't mean death, it meant the loss of Earth, his family, and all he knew and loved.
Vegeta's, however, while not as touching, was far more interesting. The Prince was facing something that his sagacious combat sense, his cruel and merciless Saiyan blood, the pride of his now very thinned Royal Bloodline could not overcome: not beating the past few foes that he was, for all intents and purposes, supposed to triumph over. Freeza held his race and heritage by the throat, and if he had beaten him, he would hold the title of not only Prince(or, maybe knowing him, that would earn him the title of King, in his own mind), but the Eternal Liberator of The Saiyan Race, something that would've secured his lineage going on far beyond the prince, and ultimately, earn himself the right in his own world to sit supreme over the universe, not because he believed he should be there, but because he had absolutely wiped the floor with the last boss in charge. And taking down Goku was to drag the low class saiyans in general back in line, as that triumph would probably have seemed like a reassertion of the old order over the absolute anomaly that was Kakarot.
But he was beaten by both, killed by one, and eclipsed by the other. And while the anime says he didn't care anymore, and he transcended because he had to get better or something, idk it feels pretty unsatisfying to me, I'd like to imagine, in his head, he's seeing death approach from a planet he's on, in the form that is absolutely insulting to him. It's not Goku, not Freeza again, and not something greater, but a meteor shower that is very much going to wipe him out, and that his lineage, his very self is going to be lost entirely to the universe, the last vestige of The True Saiyans, born on Vegeta, brutal conquerors and roving terrors as they were, by a bunch of space rocks. And that, as he was seeing what would normally be his last moments, he looks within himself, and he has nothing but contempt for what looks to be his fate, and finally transforms, breaking the barrier as he, instead of embracing his pride and being better than everyone, looks down on himself like an ant, and asks himself if he's really going to let himself be snuffed out pathetically like an ant.
I don't know, I think that helps lead into the changes he has in the future where he starts to mellow out, and instead of being this hyper prideful, arrogant and savage monster of a man, he becomes a fierce, loyal but determined protector of Earth, not lording over it as a conqueror and being number one in all of the universe, but a humble defender, whose lethality matches his devotion to protecting the denizens of his new home, as a true Prince would and should.
But, back to your music, man, I really like the second part you added, with the piano part ramping back up into another intense round of his powerup, which I personally would love to imagine would be the backing for the above paragraphs, as Vegeta lay there on what would've been his grave in space, the weight of the piano in the otherwise silent thoughtscape would be the lead up to him transcending and escaping his rapidly approaching doom. A nice addition, and a good way to extend the painfully short track, as teasing as it was concise.
Of course, you know it was already approved by me, but here's a full "Ioannis Review" to sate us both, eh?

I know its technically not canon, but the anime scene where Vegeta unlocks SSJ is not only my head-canon version, but its also one of my favorite moments in all of DBZ.
Vegeta, who had yearned all his life to be the Saiyan of Legend to defeat Frieza, humiliated on Earth, humiliated on Namek was a broken man. I feel like after Vegeta's revival on Namek, that part of him wanted to stay dead, so he trained harder than he ever had before, he was going to unlock Super Saiyan or die trying.
But, it was only when he was on his hands and knees, on some barren world in the middle of nowhere, death looming above, that this self-loathing took control. He didn't have it in him, to be a super saiyan, to defeat Frieza, all of his life he had been weak and never even knew it until now, he didn't care anymore, his entire life up to that point had been for nothing, no heir, no legacy, just nothing, because he was nothing..
And that made him *snap* , it wasn't anger at Kakarot, or Frieza, or anyone else that finally broke his limits, it was anger at himself. Anger for falling so low as to welcome death, falling so low as to have served under Frieza for nothing, falling so low that he realized on that barren rock that if he were to have died here he would have accomplished nothing, and his pride, weakened as it was at that point, gave him the strength to deny that fate.
That’s a great description of his motivation. I didn’t think about it quite like that- I could feel it but didn’t have the words to explain it. Awesome man thanks for sharing that 👏

They take a lot of work, as I am carefully listening to each track, and trying to recreate every sound as close as possible. Along the way, I get to insert a bit of myself in there too, and that’s when hopefully, it becomes my own. It’s so satisfying to hear it come together at the end of it all.
