Hidden Photographs of a Hidden People-Gypsy Travellers in Sussex

This slideshow features some fascinating historical magic lantern slides that are used in the book about Gypsy Travellers in Sussex produced by WRVS Heritage Plus. In the slideshow you can hear Peter Gillies, the Penfold sisters and Gypsy historian, Janet Keet-Black talking about the images. They were all interviewed by Hamish MacGillivray in the summer of 2010.

As I was young in Clayton and Keymer, my parents were farm labourers and always looked out for the gypsy/travellers who came and camped nearby. They gave them water and whatever they needed, even though my parents were poor. But later the fences from the landowners went up, the travellers were no longer allowed to stay and work. 'Move, go, shift'; even though there was no other place to stay. This discrimination never ends - look at the racist politics from the UK electorate (Brexit) and the government now with West Indians!

I cannot understand in the year 2021, why the travelling community , are so discriminated against. No other social/ethnic group suffers thus kevel of discrimination and persecution.

These photos are a lovely complement to a book I just read by Maggie Smith-Bendell about the free ways of her young life with the family on the road. She captured the child's delight at such a life, although there were hard times and prejudice. An excellent book: Our Forgotten Years: A Gypsy Woman's Life on the Road.
