    60 something years old Grandma here. I used your video to install 3 of these lights. I found the information was exactly what I needed. We replaced 30 year old fluorescent light fixtures in the basement. It's so bright now! Thanks for your help!

    Instead of a longer bracket to keep the ends from coming away from the ceiling as I have experienced, use self stick Velcro on the fixture and ceiling for a snug fit or two-way foam tape.

    Fair warning! If you have an older home like me and some of the existing lights do not have a junction box, the flat design makes it extremely difficult to mount as you cannot tuck the wires away.

    Just installed same one from Costco, and now they have 6 located tabs instead of 4. The base plate is ~24" long.

    Why not screw into the electrical box in ceiling as well it has two screw holes usually and helps really secure it?

    I just installed 2 of these and after an hour of frustrations, trying to re-bend the 4 hooks to just the right spot, both are still sagging just over a quarter of an inch on one side. I'm glad I found your video to confirm I didn't install it wrong--it's just a poor design.
    Oh well, I guess we get what we paid for. I'm still happy enough with them for $50 apiece.

    • @WingingItDIY
      @WingingItDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the same boat I am in. I actually ended up buying another one to replace another light. I wanted something that didn't sag but any alternative at Home Depot is much more expensive.

      @@WingingItDIY Try - securing the ends to the light to the ceiling with industrial strength velcro. On your popcorn ceiling, you'll need to scrape away the paint and fluff to get to bare, flat drywall. Since the 4 tabs are holding the weight, the velcro will just hold up the ends.
      -Good Luck

    We changed out our fluorescent ceiling lights with a couple of these hoping they would sealed up good enough to keep the insects out of them... They are not insect proof. After about 6 months the usually 30-40 flys have found their way into the light and are unsightly. Now I have the task of trying to clear them out which is of no benefit over the previous lights we had which were relatively easy to clean.

    The first one I installed failed after about 30 hours of use. The mounting system is crap for such a long fixture, the ends sag away from the ceiling as everyone else has found. Going to return the defective one and the other three I haven't installed yet.

    Thanks for the vid. Agree its not really needed inside the house, I'm putting one in my garage solely because of the flies issue you mentioned. I don't have that issue inside my house so can stick to just doing LED tubes there. Agree about the flatness issue, ceiling might not be flat but the bracket design isn't wide enough to ensure the fixture doesn't bend weeks/months down the road. Seems like a design defect.

    I picked up several of these flat led 1x4 lights from lowes on 9/1/2021 on clearance. they were $27 each. Leds' are only a little bit more effcient than the fluorescents. So you are not saving 4x more on electricity. you are using a dimmer led light is mostly why you are saving on electricity.

    • @WingingItDIY
      @WingingItDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessary but very helpful. You can use a screw drive to install, the only tricky part would be the drywall anchors. I have once shoved a phillips screwdriver through the drywall to make a hole and then hammered the anchor in.

  • @todd5082

    I like the speeded up video. I have these lights and agree the center attachment mount is a poor design. Another issue is your ceiling looks perfectly flat but most likely isn’t. The way these lights mount magnifies that. I still like the looks of these lights regardless.

    • @jimwhite2743
      @jimwhite2743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do agree - there are a few issues being with these flat panels as I stated above in my comment - the QA process and design of the mounting bracket needs a larger span of holding the panel up against the ceiling - the ceiling as many walls are out of plane from 90 degrees - also another factor is the knock down on the ceiling seems a bit large for this panel to sit flat up against the ceiling - as we often discuss in our meetings - if duct tape is good another for the space shuttle its good enough for here -

  • @gobbletegook
    @gobbletegook 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, installation of a flat fixture like that sucks when the ceilings are not level. Not much you can do. I remember in the old days where I actually installed molding around a convention fixture like you took down...because the plaster ceilings in the old days were even worse than drywall for not being even or level. But thanx for the preview!

    Most ceilings are not perfectly flat especially to accept a low profile linear panel light such as yours at 4ft. Option to correct the gaps might be to apply a bead of serious adhesive caulk at the gap and find a way to brace it tight until full cure.

    It's a good light until they "updated" it. The new one has multiple colour switch and a 6 hook mounting bracket. Some idiot engineer made a full 12x24 instead of a 1/4" shy. leaving absolutely no room to drop into a t track office unless you bend each of the tracks.

  • @jimwhite2743
    @jimwhite2743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes - they do make the battery bottom as a multi facet tool - hammer - screwdriver whatever sarcasm that is - this makes a true different in a professional or a DYI person who pretends- think outside the box for a minute on why the panel is not flush with the ceiling on the ends --
    times up -- just maybe the ceiling is not level - could it be the knockdown splatter put up has a little bit of unevenness or the drywall is the problem not being level out correctly from the start- w`e do find that lots of walls and ceilings and pads have little anomalies to it all - movement from over time - - also this manufacturer might have a QA issue of the panel having too much flexibility - the stiffness of the panel is somewhat lacking from the QA process of design -
