Speaking as a rom hacker, I get really annoyed when people conflate these categories. A ROM Hack will always (in theory) be able to run on official Nintendo hardware, or at the least on an emulator for said hardware. If it's a standalone computer program, there is no ROM image being edited. If you're not making a ROM file DON'T call it a ROM.

@@pokegingerop4210 haven't released it yet. Probably won't be done for at least another year. I haven't finalized the name yet, but it's a fakemon hack with 159 original fakemon. It's a hack of Pokemon Crystal.

So basically, all ROM hacks are fangames, but not all fangames are ROM hacks.
Not necessarily. A ROM hack can just be the base game of fire red or leaf green, just on PC. Think of a rom hack as burning the disc onto the computer. You can then edit the code and add things on top of the base framework, but it will always work with official Nintendo hardware since you aren’t actually changing the code. A fan game kind of has to build the entire framework from the ground up, but as mentioned, there are engines designed to do a bunch of the heavily lifting for you already. Fan games will almost never work on official Nintendo hardware unless someone is dedicated enough to try to make it compatible.

To make things more simple a fan game is typically made in a stand alone program such as rpg maker where it’s created by the person using Pokémon aspects such as sprites moves and such a rom hack takes a already existing game as a base and is typically doesn’t have much changed code wise and is edited and changed without most locations and such changed

The romhack edits the rom. It can change as much as it wsnts but the result will always be a rom of the same console than the one edited. It will also mostly run without much issues on official Nintendo hardware while fangames are made for other platforms like pc or mobile.
Some romhacks have extreme quality of life improvement for some games. Like IVS right on the summary, instead of vaguely talking with and NPC for each pokemon.
Most of them also patch trade evolutions, and i absolutely love that

You should see in progress in fangames like Pokemon Vanguard where you can edit what EVs you want from your stat screen. Fangames have way more potential for features then romhacks do

Now I'm developing the region design and the special mechanic I want in this game "A real reason to run teams of (mostly) a single type". Thanks for checking in!

Also I recommend Pokémon rejuvenation and reborn both have darker stories like insurgence but have much longer game play time and replay ability imo

The story of Reborn is... kind of stupid in my opinion, though it might be just because I discovered it through a let's play on SomethingAwful. Even then, there are still some aspects of it that I like (like ZEL's backstory).
@@robertlupa8273 Insurgence's story is much worse, reborn's dialogue and writing are mostly OK but the main problem of reborn is;
1. Too many characters, if you aren't paying attention or invested in the plot it can get really confusing for someone mashing A through the dialogue as the game is heavily story focused.
2. The story takes way too long to complete, there are so many cool story details or easter eggs that detail future events that you can absolutely forget because the game typically takes more than 200 hours to finish.
3. The main villain is edgy, boring, and unfortunately seems lazily written. I'm not a fan of the concept at all
Otherwise it's definitely a very high-quality fangame.
Reborn has a longer story than insurgence
@@metalhaki2754 I personally love reborn's story and characters. It's cliche sometimes but it was the best that I've seen from pokemon games in general. Strays a little bit from the generic 'beat bad guys' storyline. Also, that game WILL try to beat your ass time and time again. It's not easy.
You're the first poke-tuber I've seen actually do this. I play on my phone. So I can only play rom hacks. I hate watching stuff like "top 10 rom hacks..." And see one I like, only to find out it's not a rom hack.

Personally I separate them based on how easily you can play them on mobile, because a lot of people hear rom hack and try to play it with a mobile emulator. But games made in rpg maker or the like are much harder to run on phones and take far more space. The distinction is necessary.

@@deflatedrabbit5232 like I said, takes up a lot of space (infinite fusion for example is 1.70 gigabytes). Plus there's some games (ie uranium and insurgence) require an installer, which requires a PC.
That disnction doesnt work if a fangame is made FOR mobile and then you try to emulate a romhack for switch on the phone.
The difference is a lot simpler. Romhack has a rom, a file that contains a game made for a console. A fangame can be for any other platform.

A more simple description; romhacks was a mod game that only playable with a specific emulator or the console itself.
Meanwhile fanmade doesn't need emulator. Fanmade games was originally for PC, even through I heard that some people can play it on phone now.

i own rpgmaker myself, and let me say, plugins like the one mentioned in this video will be your backbone during the entire process, do not sleep on them
Fan games have a lot of new story and mons unlike some rom hacks only have the same story like radical red but it has all pokemon from every gen and its difficulty are beyond normal while others like unbound,saiph,glazed has new story and region but there are others are yet to be completed

You put it simply and truthfully. But personally isn’t by any means the true definition but I would say fan games are when they change the story and/or mons. You can add or even overhaul many features of a game like pokemon fire red but it’ll still feel sort of like the base game.

Personally, I disagree with you on many of these games. You seem to care more for difficulty than I do (I will agree that the mainline games are too easy, but some of these are nearly as hard as vgc).
That said, you made your point of view understandable and presented the games in a concise manner. Props!
Basically fangames have a lot more liberty to do whatever they want, while romhacks could still theorically do a lot of those stuff, is harder, at least for what I have seen
Try Pokemon Unbound, Quetzal, or Crown! There's also a bunch of other ones but those are the best examples I think
I thought I read somewhere that Infinite Fusion was a FireRed rom hack
It is 100% a standalone fan game based heavily off of fire red's concepts, but then significantly expanded.
Just a quick reality check: What Infinite Fusion does would I'm pretty certain be 100% impossible to do as a romhack, as it has over 150k dex entries and thus sprite entries in the folder. To my knowledge, no method of making a romhack via normal romhack methods would be capable of doing this in a way that would actually work well. I mean, my sprite folders in my install that's 6 months out of date are over 1.1GB in size. Just the battle sprite folders. Yeah.
You might have it mixed up with any number of other Fusion games, I know that one that I played (idk which one) definitely is a rom hack

Rom hack: edit of a game/region without too many plot changes
Fangame: can be based off of a rom but new story or region and maybe fakemons
That's just incorrect man, as someone who's been in the scene since 2010ish, that's not a gold distinction because there are SO many romhacks with huge plot changes and custom regions. Learn the difference please

I personally really prefer ROM hacks as I can play them on hardware! I've been, for example, playing Pokémon Gaia on my GameBoy Micro and it's just overall a good experience.
rom hacks end up usually being better because they use a mainline pokemon game as their base, which means theyre using the same god tier RNG and hidden mechanics
I refuse to play fan games but love rom hacks for the simple reason of I want to play Pokemon on either a Gameboy or a DS
people need to seperate these two more cause I'll see a video of someone calling a rom hack a fan game, and I find it annoying because I don't have the ability to play rom hacks yet.
Phones can only play rom hacks so I like them better also its very empressive since they have to use the code from the rom to make the game but I'm sure ppl already know the work around for that.

I’m on here hoping for some advice, been wondering about what equipment/tech I might need if I wanted to get into playing Pokémon fan games, like the guys play on TH-cam? I see a lot of them play on controller and stuff like that but I’ve got no experience with Tech and was hoping someone here might know?
So, for fan games, like Insurgence, Uranium, Xenoverse, etc. - All you need is a PC with a working GPU and CPU, and a keyboard.
The keyboard controls work perfectly fine by default.
Setting up a controller for your PC is a tiny bit more complicated, depending on the Controller and Game. Some will simply work straight out of the box, others will need a 3rd party program that converts controller inputs to keyboard inputs - I have no clue if the method of registering the .exe as a non-steam game on steam works, but that's the first thing I'd probably try if keyboards weren't doing it for you, but otherwise, finding said programs really isn't that hard to do even though I've never done it personally due to just... being fine with using a keyboard. (honestly prefer it, tbqh.)
For Romhacks, like Kaizo Emerald, you need an appropriate Emulator. MOST run off of gen 3, which means a GBA emulator. I... can't help you beyond this because I avoid GBA emulators as much as I possibly can because they're annoying to find working, safe versions of, and then the roms and romhacks required to get them to work are also annoying.
I've done it once before many years ago but couldn't give you any sort of up-to-date process. I'd suggest looking around communities for guides/resources that seem/feel trustable, if you want to.
Other notes: Fan game primary websites are Pokecommunity and Reliccastle. Insurgence and Xenoverse have their own websites. (p-insurgence and w/e team weedle's site is. It's usually the first google result for Pokemon Xenoverse or Xenoverse Ad Astra Per Aspera, but they also have their own youtube channel that probably has the links listed somewhere, or you can find them on Voltsy's channel pretty consistently somewhere per series he does.) Uranium is downloaded off of a reddit post that's pinned on it's subreddit the last I checked. 99% of fan games are found on pokecommunity or reliccastle though.
Romhacks similarly are mostly found on 1 or 2 sites, though again, couldn't tell you what they are.
Seriously, all you really need is a working windows environment with a functional ACTUAL GPU/CPU (You're looking at $100 at most for something that's good enough to run a fan game, literally like any actual GPU works, just none of those "built in trash GPUs" that struggle to run a flash game.), and the basic input devices required to functionally use a PC.
If all you have is a Mac, there are ways to get Windows running on your Mac, I couldn't tell you the process because I also avoid Macs like the plague because I'm a gamer, not an officer worker.
If your only option is to play on your phone, you have the option of JOIplay for fan games, and phone emulators for romhacks. I couldn't really tell you much beyond this for the process.
However, note that not all fan games work correctly on JOIplay, so you'll definitely run into minor or major issues eventually - could be as minor as a glitched out texture, or as major as a broken event that hard locks your progress. Depends on the game.
Also you'll more than likely need a controller that works with a phone if you want to play on your phone. Uh.. yeah, good luck with that one. They exist but I've legitimately never touched one in my life so can't help there either lol.

Pokemon Anil and Xenoverse are good ones for this. Anil has gen 1 to 9 mons whereas Xenoverse is mostly fakemons

@@DelvinIsDumb Rom Hacks generally just have a more solid foundation, so even if the game itself is shaky, at least it still feels good to control. Infinite Fusion (which like is an alright game) feels kinda shitty to control, especially in the overworld, but justifies the decision by the existence of the fusion mechanic. Many fangames would probably better work as rom hacks though just because of that more solid foundation tbh.
