As a suggestion for a train related topic: Go to the station of Zwolle and film/describe the train schedule there. Every .15 and .45, long distance trains from Leeuwarden and Groningen come in, as well as from Amersfoort and Lelystad, and depart a few minutes later. On top of that, most other regional trains arrive a few minutes earlier and depart a few minutes later. All pretty much simultanously. This way, you can easily connect between all services with minimal waiting times. This happens at more stations, but I think Zwolle is a very clear one. This is happening in Germany now too, with their Integrale Taktfahrplan or Deutschlandtakt program. And in Switzerland (Bahn2000), where they go as far as planning specific infrastructure upgrades based on these fixed crossing times (on .00/.30) at major stations. It's a really easy overlooked, but very strategic idea.
Yes! And not only in Zwolle, you'll get good connections in Zutphen, Hengelo and Groningen as well because the timetabels are optimised for it. Another suggestion for NJB: signalling. Especially the Dutch way to reduce waiting times at level crossings near stations, called 'stop/door-schakelingen', might be interesting for your channel. There are some special versions, like in Baarn or Bunnik.
And while he is in Zwolle he should go film the street side of the station building and see if he can find the artwork that was put there as Zwolle is one end of the Kunstlijn or Art Line, the other being Emmen. The Kunstlijn is a railroad line that has a dedicated work of art at every station. This was done after the line was electrified. The line is also known as Vechtdallijn as it follows, more or less, the river (Overijsselse) Vecht.
That James Kunstler TED talk is brutal and amazing! Jeff Speck has also done a few great TED talks about walkable cities, and some other non-TED presentations.

Love your channel. For Amsterdam trams I always go to Rail Public Transport. I believe it was started a few years ago by a young man named Huey who just liked riding Amsterdam trams and posting videos of his rides on TH-cam. I found it by searching for a tram ride of tram lijn 17 from Amsterdam Centraal to Dijkgraafplein in Osdorp where mijn oma used to live. I don’t think it’s only the kind of city improvement content you are making that’s keeping eyeballs on your channel, your creation style is SO DAMN BINGABLE, congrats and keep up the good work
Thanks to this channel, I found out that I was very passionate about urban planning, especially public transit. Thank you :) Can't wait to see your video about Dutch trains. If one day you plan to talk about the densest train network in the world (Switzerland), I would be happy to provide footage as I have the yearly pass that allows me to take any train / bus at any time. I don't know how it works in the netherlands, but the Swiss network is build such that you can travel every 30 minutes from any city or village to any other city or village, but without having to wait more than 5 minutes when changing to connecting trains. The timetable is well integrated such that local trains are connected to direct trains and vice-versa, local busses are connected to the train timetable and so on.
@@NotJustBikes Switzerland has the best public transport system, but the Dutch have the (vastly) superior bike infrastructure. Also, there are regional differences between French speaking part and German speaking part. Bike infrastructure in the German speaking part is okay(ish), as in the French part, they juste painted yellow lines on existing roads (without broadening them) and called it a day. Oh gosh, I should start a youtube channel about public transit in Switzerland.
Congrats on 100k! It’s kinda sad that you’re moving out of the appartement that I spent so much time watching paint dry in... Maybe we’ll get more paint watching at the new place though! Thanks for great video and recommendations!
After binging your channel for the past few days, I think it's only fair to congratulate you! Your channel ticks all the boxes, and with a good dose of humour, I might add :)
Wow well done, I thought I loaded the wrong video with that opening lol. Absolutely love this channel and the ideas you cover. Love to be able to expand that love.
most channels I watch usually talk about themselves or the audience. It was really nice to see more people who cover about city planning, and benefita of biking. Anyway have a good day :)
One cyclist in Lisbon is also fun to watch, it's mostly just a guy cycling to different locations in Lisbon, kinda like the two truckers you mention at the end of this video, but occasionally he will give you some history about a road or building and often times will highlight how purely terrible people are about keeping to the rules of the road, like pedestrian constantly walking in the bikepath or cars parked in them. He also does some funny visual effects animations about what he wish he could do sometimes, like take out a grenade to blow up a car parked in the bike path. It's very relaxed, if you are just looking for simple videos but aren't interested in learning anything except for very occasionally a little bit, he's a recommend, fun videos where you don't need to use your brain.
Also worth mentioning are Aussie Wirraway and MetroManMelbourne. These two channels talk about Australian public transit. Aussie Wirraway primarily focuses on public transport in South Australia, while MetroManMelbourne talks about rail transit in the state of Victoria.
Thanks for all these great recommendations! I’m grateful that you introduced me to Strong Towns a year ago, I’ve been giving their book as a gift to all my city govt friends. I was definitely wondering if the Life Sized City was going to come up - I was very disappointed that Mikael was such a jerk to you in his recent video. As far as I’m concerned your videos are excellent and you’ve got me inspired to visit Amsterdam as soon as travel becomes a thing again.
As a city planner from Mexico, thanks you for the recommendations, it helps me a lot 'cause I'm going to Germany to finish my degree maybe my master there. I hope this kind of channel (about urbanismo or city planning) can also be as popular in latinoamerica as there are in Europe.
After watching a number of your videos, I finally took lunch at work and rode my longboard for the first time. I normally take my car for a 1/3 mile trip. I want to do it again!
OK, that train ride with the 100K award at the end was hilarious. I can only imagine the childish smile you must have had parading the award around haha! Great job on your channel. 🏆🏆 I agree with the other comments that your videos are really well made and cover underrated topics that every grown adult should have to learn about.
I love it when TH-camrs shout out channels they like. Many I would have heard about already thanks to the algorithm but there usually a few I discover that I hadn't heard of yet.
I like what you did for your Copenhagen video. When travelling is possible again, it'd be cool to see you go to other European cities and review them just like you did for Copenhagen. What they can do better, cycling culture, infrastructure, street design, public transport etc
@@NotJustBikes try to not just focus on the bad, but also the improvement they've made. Paris for instance isn't anywhere near Dutch, yet, but I can appreciate the rapid evolution they've been through. As with my hometown Brussels.
Congrats, and keep making the wonderful content. I moved to the Netherlands a bit more than 2 years ago (not from Canada), and your videos helped and still helping to fall in love with this country even more
I'd like to mention the channel @Stockholmshjärta. The guy basically explores the entire Stockholm metro, talks about the histories of various stations as well as looks toward the future of transit in the city.
Wow! James Kunstler does not beat around the bush. Pfahaha! That was some entertaining and educational brutality. Nice set of links here, btw! They all in their own way encourage to create a livable future.
I don't know if you mentioned it, but *Rail Public Transport* is another wonderful TH-cam Channel focused on Dutch Railways. The person behind it is also a rail operator for NS Railways.
0:34 you moved 29 times?! You must not have a lot of unnecessary stuff left. I moved for the first time last year and I found out I had waaaay too much stuff left in the attic.
It would be fun to have videos that go over the best different public transportation options for a tourist going between downtown Amsterdam and various local places a tourist might go. You could make a series, in which each episode covered several options between say downtown and one specific destination. What kind of card or token should a tourist get for each modality? How could a tourist figure out if their first choice of transit should not be used that day, and they need to pick another modality? This series would inherently also be pointing out which destinations seem best to visit from Amsterdam by local means. I presume to go from Amsterdam to say Ghent that one would just take the full-size train.
Great list! Good to find out that I already watch most of your stated favorites. I did miss 'Do Not Settle'. They were pretty big a few years ago during my studies, but might be a bit too architecture leaning in their videos.
You're channel is absolutely great! It's a delight listening to you. And these recommendations came right on time as I feel recently that you also don't release enough videos to satisfy my appetite... Thank you for sharing and I wish you only the best of luck!!
NotJustBikes, a very useful, interesting and relevant Dutch Railway related topic is Spoorslag'70, basically the origin of the current timetable in the Netherlands and why the trains connect so well to each other every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Later iteration Rail 21 wasn't as succesfull but still very interesting to look at.
Regarding Dutch trains - something that always struck me when I lived in NL is how much more relaxed the whole experience is, and I think a lot of that is about ticketing. Being able to just tap in and get on the train, without having to navigate ticket machines or barriers, and also not having to worry about a ridiculously large fine if you forget to tap out (when I was there the standard fare if you forgot to tap out was about €20), is so much more chill than UK trains, and also reduces queues a lot at peak times. Would be interested to hear your perspective on that!
If you like watching people make stuff out of other stuff, I can recommend backyardbowyer, who makes bows from pipes, and knives from scrap metal or glass.
As for videos on trains, I'm really interested in hearing your view on the 1st/2nd Class split in trains here, especially considering how you often mentioned that in North America, bus, tram and train travel is only really done by "the poor carless".
This is why I moved to a semi rural area after a lifetime in cities. And although it's great to be able to have a garden and my own chickens, I am dying on the vine from lack of interaction. I wish there was a city in the States that I could move to and get good sleep. I'm working on it :-) Thank you for your seriously insightful perspective!

The timetable is well integrated such that local trains are connected to direct trains and vice-versa, local busses are connected to the train timetable and so on.
Yes, the Netherlands has a pretty good train system, but the Swiss train system is on a whole other level. I love taking the train in Switzerland.
Quite a few I already know and others I’m looking forward to checking out. Congratulations on your subscriber milestone.
Wow well done, I thought I loaded the wrong video with that opening lol. Absolutely love this channel and the ideas you cover. Love to be able to expand that love.
Three of the channels I have subscribed to for a long time. What fun to have these other channels to explore.
most channels I watch usually talk about themselves or the audience. It was really nice to see more people who cover about city planning, and benefita of biking.
Anyway have a good day :)
Sharing these videos with local elected officials and transportation planners provides great information for them.
I endorse this tip. Also because Lisbon is just beautiful.
Also worth mentioning are Aussie Wirraway and MetroManMelbourne. These two channels talk about Australian public transit. Aussie Wirraway primarily focuses on public transport in South Australia, while MetroManMelbourne talks about rail transit in the state of Victoria.
Vanishing Underground is someone building up a transit related channel. Currently doing transit network build out videos of north american cities.
What happened?
As a city planner from Mexico, thanks you for the recommendations, it helps me a lot 'cause I'm going to Germany to finish my degree maybe my master there.
I hope this kind of channel (about urbanismo or city planning) can also be as popular in latinoamerica as there are in Europe.
After watching a number of your videos, I finally took lunch at work and rode my longboard for the first time. I normally take my car for a 1/3 mile trip. I want to do it again!
Nice!!
I didn't know that I was interested in urban planning until finding this channel and now it's one of my favourites.
Thank you, I'll be referring back to this list
The problem is that other cities are so far behind that it would be a total bloodbath.
@@NotJustBikes try to not just focus on the bad, but also the improvement they've made. Paris for instance isn't anywhere near Dutch, yet, but I can appreciate the rapid evolution they've been through. As with my hometown Brussels.
This is the first and only TH-cam channel where I've hit the bell icon.
Sweet! Thanks! :)
I'm so glad somebody finally posted the high quality version of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster.
The best version.
Congrats, and keep making the wonderful content. I moved to the Netherlands a bit more than 2 years ago (not from Canada), and your videos helped and still helping to fall in love with this country even more
“[City Beautiful] is probably the largest dedicated urban planning channel on TH-cam.”
oh how the tides shifted.
1:35 WOW, that sounds amazingly great
If you ever wondered why there was always a "radio voice", now you know. :)
I have such a strange addiction to urbanism and how cities work for people so thank you for all these new suggestions.
That growth is hecking impressive, congrats dude
Thank you for being generous towards other youtubers!
Thank you so much!
NotJustBikes, a very useful, interesting and relevant Dutch Railway related topic is Spoorslag'70, basically the origin of the current timetable in the Netherlands and why the trains connect so well to each other every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Later iteration Rail 21 wasn't as succesfull but still very interesting to look at.

. . . . . . . Thank you
. . . . . . . . . . . Cycling is fun. . We now have 30 subscribers cycling in My Scotland and in Europe
.
I was surprised I didn't see City Nerd on the list
it wasn't around at the time this was posted, I believe
Terry Barentsen makes amazingly smooth cycling videos in New York, the most amazing of which are with bike messengers on fixies.
Well there goes my productivity for the week I guess...thanks NJB! (By the way your channel is great! Big fan here!)
NJB rly catching up to City Beautiful!
Congratulations on your channel's growth!
That playbutton is well deserved
Moving again huh. Can't wait to look at some drying paint.
As for videos on trains, I'm really interested in hearing your view on the 1st/2nd Class split in trains here, especially considering how you often mentioned that in North America, bus, tram and train travel is only really done by "the poor carless".
Congrats on 32 subscribers!!! On to the huge milestone of 64!
This is why I moved to a semi rural area after a lifetime in cities. And although it's great to be able to have a garden and my own chickens, I am dying on the vine from lack of interaction.
I wish there was a city in the States that I could move to and get good sleep. I'm working on it :-)
Thank you for your seriously insightful perspective!
Thanks for all these recommendations! They are excellent.
Machinist Stefan is also a really good and underrated channel for trains
I agree Here is his channel th-cam.com/channels/t7lIJmeV-c_PGvLBcjfzaw.html
It's awesome that you like wintergatan, I'm still waiting to see the new marble machine, it has been many years since the original marble machine...
Waw man! Thank you so much!
