Hans didn't touch on this, so I thought I might shed some light on the subject. If you're looking to downhill or freeride (slides and such) then it's most common to use a stiff deck. These decks are generally not that long either (shorter than a pintail and far shorter than a dancer), most riders prefer topmount decks too, but as Hans says, it's all personal preference. Getting a deck with concave will help lock your feet in place whilst gripping sharp turns (downhill) or busting out massive slides (freeride). The type of concave is again down to personal preference. Downhill decks are generally asymmetrical, whilst freeride decks are quite often symmetrical. There is a lot of crossing over though, so again, find out what you feel comfortable with, grab your helmet and go shred!

In my opinion the first board is always the board where you find your riding style! After that you now what size shape etc. you want. Cause I prefer more short longboards to dance cause you can combine fast tricks in a dancing line. Little bit weird but I think the style you wanna dance or freestyle on your board is the most important thing. By the way good luck at the Hamburg longboard open! I wanted to be there but it wasn't possible :( Greetings from germany.

ongboarding in terms of cruising/carving+freeride is set of trade offs
in terms of instability & pure joy of riding :
below is my thoughts. disregard bushing recommendations if doing
      tricks/sliding.
weight of person will affect total riding experience. 110-140lbs=super
lucky & pick & choose whatever you want as gravity is not a
bitch to you esp w sliding/tricks/downhill
165+=need to consider weight of board & wheels to optimize riding
scenario as gravity will fuck w you esp doing tricks/slides
get rid of washers alltogether except for 45deg base plates. where 1 set
is/may be needed. also put the cup washer reverse[facing out].
45deg base plates=180mm is easier to set up super carvy riding w
bushing. 160mm or less for light weight trucks is not good for super
      carvy riding situations.
50deg base plates customize w all types of truck length. best to easy
      plug & play
      height of person
      5ft 8inch & under
      36-40inch
42+ are doable for 5ft8 & under but if not dancing or downhill, it
      is pointless for downtown
      5ft9inch+
      38/40-44/46 [you will feel comfortable]
      board weight
      3lbs or less
      yes
      4/5lbs or more
no unless you want to do downhill primarily although it may not be
      needed
w 75mm wheels & paris trucks which add a lot of weight, a lighter
board helps in pick up & walk/ing situations.
71/75mm[size] wheels w 82 or less[softness] duro are best for cutting
      through streets like butater
paris & abec11 trucks are great but you can get cheap/generic trucks
and improve performance by mixing venom bushingesp 78-80duro w cheap
      bushings for slipperery carving riding.ie
going around pedestrians at a drop of a hat.
in terms of weight abec11 attack & randal trucks are lighter than
paris trucks. a lighter truck+heavy board+65/71mm may equalize somewhat
      to light board+paris/bear[?]+ 75mm abec11 big zig setup.prefer 2nd
      option for downturn.
also wider contact point for wheels 50mm or more ie big zigs better for
      turning.
      venoms bushings are magic
      bearings spacers are a must w good wheels[abec 11 big zigs71/75mm, cult
80 yellow & pink 71mm] which are as good as durians/these wheels w
      less price point.
loaded vanguard style/type boards are best as cutouts allow 71/75mm
wheels w/o risers. also rkp trucks add height. so they minimize wheel
bite. having riser w rkp+75mm makes board too high of ground to be
comfortable for day to day cruising.
board is not importants. wheels/bushing/trucks/spacers are more
important and worth spending $ on. once you figure out what you like
riding style, then spend $ on board.
in short, venom bushing paired w generic bushings & soft 71-75mm
wheels & wrist guards is the minimum to get the max out of longboard
cruising and riding. also unstable board setup is fine esp when you
speed up you replicate the downhill carvy feeling w/o having to leave
      downtown or city.
also get wrist guards more than helmets. you will break wrists first
which causes you to use your head to break fall. soif you dont break
wrist, your head will be fine if you practice situational awarenes like
      [delta]

Hi man, I gotta say that I've just subscribed to your channel and I was blown away by how real you and the things you say are, proves to show that you're an honest person with an insatiable love for the sport and I can't thank you enough for bringing us beginners so much positive energy and the will to keep on going, especially since the longboarding community in my country isn't that great.
On that note, I would like to ask you for some advice: Last hear I've bought my first and only longboard and I fell in love with it: a big cruiser, perfect for commuting around town. Every month or so I'd clean it a bit by wiping the dust and dirt from the board, wheels and the trucks, I'd remove the wheels and brush that part as well. About a month ago my board started slowing down compared to before, it also started making some squeaking sounds whenever I accelerate. The internet said that I need to lubricate the trucks and properly clean my bearings as well. Since every video on the internet about the subject gives me different reasons as to why and why I shouldn't do what they say, I'm afraid to try anything and haven't ridden my board for about 2 weeks. I tried asking my country's longboarding community about this, but they ignored my cries for help, stating that it's something I should already know. Might you know what I should do, what I should use and such? I don't know who else to turn to, I loved cruising so much and you gave me the motivation to try and learn dancing as well, but I'm afraid of busting my board up if I try to do anything without proper instructions.
Aside from that, my wheels have started to crack from all the pebbles I would come across while commuting. Could you recommend a store where I could perhaps order the cleaning products, as well as wheels, trucks etc.?
If you ever read this, thank you in advance, I hope you continue with your work and I gotta say that you're my true role model when it comes to longboarding. =D

      @LongboardsBE  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi there! First of, thank you so much. That means a lot to me, for real!!
I understand that you're afraid to do something wrong, I searched for a video in which they do it like I do and this is pretty much what i'm doing:
      th-cam.com/video/v2Yf3AocEnM/w-d-xo.html
I recommend just going to a hardware store and asking for something to clean out bearings. The WD40 of this video isn't ideal but honestly, I don't know it ll that well either. I just use something for the hardware store after asking them for something that cleans out bearings without getting them rusty or anything.
Also, where are you from? Cause it depends on where you live what stores there are. If you're from Europe I recommend Sickboards.nl, otherwise just google for something in your country :)
Anyways, you'll be fine! Honestly it's just a piece of hardware so you can't really fuck it up too much haha so don't worry about all that. My wheels are cracked in the core 99% of the time and I still skate them, I've skated on broken trucks for months and had fucked up bearings too.
I will work on a board maintenance video this summer btw, coming asap!
Have an awesome week(end) and big hugs from Belgium!

Hans Wouters wow, thanks for acrially replying :D I'm from Serbia, not being in the EU makes it a bit harder xD thanks for the video and the advice, I'll be sure to go check it out and I'll ask the hardware store about the cleaning product. Actually replying to my post shows how real you are!

I ride goofy and really need to work on riding regular - but my stability is really bad on my left leg! i have just under a month til uni and i hope i can get good enough before hand! im pretty sure the majority of your views will be from me replying every video multiple times to understand how to do steps and to get used to the basics! I like to think that now it's not a problem. I would suggest you the Loaded Overland just for instance, it's a cross over of a DK Skateboard, just a bit wider and bigger. A lot of people mount that board with Indy's and street wheels !
There's also examples of that kind of board like Kanthanka, Cosmo line-up has some too etc..

I'm in the process to get my second board. This will be a long dancer.
There is one question, I just don't find an answer to: how much does the weight of the board (dancer, 120cm) affect the overall performance? Will - 600g for the deck have a huge impact on the ability to do freestyle tricks? I could get the board with milled out parts in the core from my local shop. But am a bit hesitant because of the price.
    Thanks a lot!

I am interested in buying a cruising carving skateboard. My trouble is the trucks possibly hitting the deck when I am doing carvings. I know that I should buy high trucks, right? What suggestions can you tell related to this? Also the wheels 60 or 70 mm.

Do you think a 117cm board with a more pointy tail would be good for it? (I honestly don’t know the exact name of the shape.. it kinda looks like a surfing board hahaah)
edit: I found out the technical name of the shape which is pintail board.

Hi, I wanted your advice on buying a beginer cruising and commuting longboard. Should I buy a longer pintail, which I heard has less grip, gets very fast and unstable, or a shorter dropthrough, which tends to be more stable i guess, I dont really know too much about this? :s

+HatakanenoYoshi Earthwing, sector 9 and Muirskate are 3 decent quality brands for your price range. As for specifically what type of board, my first one was a drop through and it served quite well, just remember they are all LONGboards so they'll all be quite large. Board type is all personal preference in the end though. Hope I helped!

    • @HatakanenoYoshi
      @HatakanenoYoshi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, that helped. :) What do you think about bearings, is there much difference in brands, I see bones and oust supporters constantly fighting which is better?

    • @ya-rx8nd
      @ya-rx8nd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

HatakanenoYoshi With bearings good ones that work are all you really need as a beginner. I had a problem with the bearing in my first board that I didn't know of since I was starting out that made one wheel too wobbly. I like Zealous bearings since they include the spacer and speed ring combined and also use grease which lasts for longer than oil.
