    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
    Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
    Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
    Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
    Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
    Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
    Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
    Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

    I'm not sure if you know what your channel means to me and I can only imagine that I'm not the only one that feels this way. I have an 11 y/o son and we look forward to watching your videos together. I've been in a Prepper mindset for the last few years and have been taking steps to develop an off-grid homestead. Your videos give me peace and inspire me to continue to broaden my skill set. I love your simplistic concepts about life and the way you appreciate the little things. I love your work ethic and attention to details that matter. My son and I are impressed by your building skills and craftsmanship and if we ever have the opportunity to cross paths with you we would be honored to spend a day working with you and Frankie at your cabin. If you ever find yourself in the Carolina's, know that you have a friend in the area and our home and hospitality is open and available to you. Your channel has inspired us to start recording some of our progress on our little cabin and share them on TH-cam. Keep showing us the way. Warmest Regards, CP

      Thank you very much for your heartfelt response. I really enjoy replies like this as they are very encouraging and inspire me to keep filming. Also, Thank you for your offer as I hope to do some travelling one of these days and film with some of my viewers. I've always had an interest in the Carolinas and Kentucky and have friends in both places.
      Best of luck with your cabin.

      I have to 2nd what CP of Off Grid Nation said. In watching the video's and reading thru some of the comments, many people feel this way. You are really giving so much hope, peace and understanding to so many and that is a huge accomplishment. More people need to let others know they are doing great things for them so they know. There is so much hopelessness in the world right now and it seems to be growing unfortunately. You JC, give so much hope and I want you to know that! Thank you!

    You are so right about keeping Journal's, we tend to forget our passages in our lives. I used to do the same but stopped when I ended up in a wheelchair, maybe for the better. I also just started building my small Cabin on Vancouver Island too, small but made for me in a chair. We all should keep note's either good or bad lives & pass them on to who ever wants to learn from past experiences for Family or Not.

      thebossoftheswamp Most definitely. Being relatively new to the community here, I'm am learning what channels are worth sharing, and which ones aren't. There are quite a few that aren't lol. At 57, I am trying to build my homestead up on the 10 acres I bought with the barn in south central Ohio. I'll retire at 62 and move to it full time. You philosophies and mine mirror quite intriguingly. I do feel lucky to have run across your channel, and lucky enough to have subscribed. As, I said, you're an inspiration to many. Thank you very much indeed!

    Moved to my cabin finally, Love burning the wood fire place every day i'm off work. It seems there are a ton of little birds out here, My wife says they are dark eyed junkos, red belly and red head wood peckers, blue jays, cardinals and northern flickers. Life in the woods is great, I have not even begun to miss the city one day.

      25 years in the boonies for me and never a regret, it's not easy but nothing good ever is. Nothing quite like the freedom of looking out your window and never seeing another house or hearing noise you don't make. Glad to see you have achieved your dream while you are still young enough to enjoy it for years to come.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      limpingoatfarm I couldn't agree more my friend. When I drive through a city and see houses butted right up against each other, I always ask myself "How the heck do people live like this"? And pay big money to live here. I live such a great life on very little income. I could never go back to "normal living" ever again.
      All the best.

    • @limpingoatfarm
      @limpingoatfarm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      same here, but as I have a number of years on you, I am very fearful of the time we will need to leave this place. I work hard to avoid becoming a frail old person, but one never knows. I keep a herd of goat specifically to keep myself active, the milk and cheese are a bonus. We are lucky in the respect this area of the country offers many really friendly nice small towns with homes right outside of them with small acreages. Still, I LOVE the fact that I can go out and sit on my deck in any stage of dress or undress anytime, not a big deal, but privacy I will miss. I can build a bonfire to burn my brush leftover from cutting my own firewood, no permit required. Strange how one can enjoy work so much when you are your own overseer. LOVE your videos and I just shared one last night with a friend who was feeling blue. She let me know she thoroughly enjoyed it and thanked me, and therefore I thank you.Hope you do someday sit down to write a book, whether an autobiography or a book of short essays, I love hearing your philosophy of a life well lived.

    Good Morning again, hehe. Finished work early and was sitting outside looking at the stars. Living outside the city there are millions of them and like you, I feel so blessed to be here. I know how you feel watching the sunrises, blink and it's changed, blink again and colors are there. I do love the dark blue fading to lighter shades and then to color, it's my favorite time of the day too. :)
    I'm so thrilled to see someone else who uses a journal as I do. I have written in one since very young and wish I'd looked back to reread some of my older ones, I burn them once a year as I've had people invade my privacy and read them, which is another reason I live alone.
    It has been documented that those who use a journal are less likely to have severe depression and need therapy. Working out things in my journal is my most precious time of my day.
    Hope you and yours are well, good to see a vid from you. Stay warm and safe... wow coyotes. Wouldn't ya like to know what they were saying? lol

    I love the winter! I don't understand all the people who migrate to Fla during the winter mos and try to make a person think they are missing out on life if it's not 80 degrees and sunny in the winter!?
    I will take my rural, quiet and slower-paced life any day over any city living. I had to live in the city for about a year several years ago and never felt more lonely in my life!
    I hated every minute of it!
    I'm glad the city dwellers think they have it all too, because it keeps them out of my "paradise"!

    Hey Boss, most of the time, I don't enjoy "talkie" TH-cam videos, but I found your video quite enjoyable. Your points on using a journal to reflect on your life (where you have been, where you are going and where you are) to be very thoughful and good, solid (but not preach-y) advice. I envy your cabin in the woods. I am working towards that myself and can't wait to leave the city behind for a place in the country. The scene of the rising sun on the woodshed made me just a little jealous. Your channel is different than many I follow, and that is a very good thing. I live in the foothills of the Rockies just West of Calgary Alberta and we used to have lots of coyotes around, even in the hamlet. A few years ago the wolves moved in and the coyotes moved out so I done hear them yelping anymore.

    Another great video Boss. I also have written a journal for years....pushing 40 or so years with only a few gaps. It sure is something to sit with a pile of them and read stuff you wrote so many years back. The amazing thing is, if you write enough detail each day, you can actually remember EVERY day, even those 30+ years ago. Love the coyotes raising heck. We have no shortage of them here, in fact, I usually here that music several times a week as I lay in bed. Neat stuff that urban folks rarely get to experience.

    My husband hunts deer and my mom use to butterfly the back strap then take a saucer and beat it. She'd dip the meat in flour mixed with seasoning and fry it quickly. She'd bake cheap Pillsbury biscuits and we'd eat the fried back strap on biscuits. Those are good memories. We try to cook it her way but hers still tasted better. She probably cooked the meat in lard. We like the younger deer for our meat. Much tenderer.

    I love how you speak about being an emotional reactionary vs being proactive based upon principles and logic. Mastering one's self is the hardest journey of all. I have always kept a journal and I would go back and read what had happened previously, and witness how much I had changed in the time from then to now. I'm an introvert, so it's easier to talk and learn from myself than from others. I wish you a long, healthy and purposeful life. Jim, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the interaction between Frankie and you, What a wonderful life he has living in the woods and able to explore nature at will. He also has your attention all the time and that is really a very special thing. He is a beautiful animal and credit to his breed. I recently read a well written book about a man and his relationship with his dog Merle. It's called Merle's Door and was authored by Ted Kerasote. He too lived in a cabin in the woods but the book is really all about his dog. If you haven't read it already I think you might really enjoy it. well JC, this may be my favorite Swamp Boss video. You certainly have a gift man...I can't remember watching a video that touched me inside as this one did. Your journal - I often thought of keeping one but just didn't make the time - setting long term goals - rethinking before acting out - I spend time alone each fall at our Pa. cabin hunting and trapping. There alone I have the opportunity to think, think about most important things in life like my behavior, family, those who have passed, memories of good times long ago...AND what the future holds - I think of being so grateful for having and wish for others to have the same and more - being humble leads to peaceful man

The birds wake you up in the morning and it is a pleasant song. One of the greatest gifts is waking up next to my wife for the last 52 years and seeing that cute smile I fell in love with so long ago. Yes JC its good to reflect on life and things we've done. It's how alot of us learn from our mistakes (hopefully....lol) And sometimes we sit and dream. Some say its silly to dream, that dreams dont usually come true. Well I say that most of the time dreams dont hurt anyone and sometimes can bring immense joy to ur heart. And in this crazy world, anything that can do that is alright in my book. Another enjoyable 15 mins from you JC......thanx alot and keep it up, I always look forward to seeing and listening to ur short clips of ur life.
