Thanks for the video! I'm running Javelina (my first 100 miler) in October so am starting to obsess about the logistics of it all, and using TH-cam for ideas and inspiration. I'm a fellow Canuck (though living in the US) and I hope to see you there!
Well done Brice! This looks epic. I'm adding it to my 'wishlist' of events. I've also just recently finished my first 100 miler, though it wasn't an official event, and just my own made up route along the coast of West Wales. I definitely missed out a bunch of the social stuff you get in a race/event environment, but have plenty more booked in for 2023, and super stoked to get going again. Looking forward to your future content.
Thank you so much for watching! And congrats on your 100 Miles as well. Official or not, 100 miles is still 100 miles, no matter which way you slice it. Some might argue it is even tougher without the social aspect and the crew. Respect!
Very nice video! 🤗 You did a great job showing off the beauty of the AZ desert. As an Aravaipa employee, "Thank You!" for coming down and experiencing our little party in the desert! 😊
Thank YOU John for helping put this race together. Most of us agree that it is the funnest event of the year! I can't wait to race it again this October. I am hooked!
Thank you so much! Yes, the heat was a bit of a challenge, but my crew and all the volunteers at aid stations made sure we were as comfortable as possible out there. It was so fun! And yes, Maurice was one of the highlights of my day! Such great energy!
Congrats Brice! such a sweet race, I love the Squats and dancing haha, hearing those coyotes at night is so cool. way to crush it, you earned it. -Matt
Thanks Matt! I was running on pure elation all day, hence the dancing. As for the squats, Jenny had a lot to do with it. 😊 She made sure I showed up on race day ready to tackle this thing. Can't wait for the next one!
Thank you so much Stephanie! Pure joy is the only way to get through these things. (with a bit of training too of course. 😊) Thank you for watching and for the kind feedback! See you at the next Trail Lab!
Ahah. At that point I hadn’t eaten anything for 8 hours. I was lying on the trail when the medic arrived. Finally I finished the race in 22 and something. What a day! Thank you for sharing the video
Thank you Susan. I indeed trained a significant amount before the race to make sure I'd have a fun day, but you are correct, it is never easy. But it'd take a lot more than that for me to even admit that I am hurting on race day. :) As soon as you mention the pain cave, you are in trouble, in my opinion.
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind feedback! It's always nice to hear when people appreciate the work we do to put these together. On top of racing the thing of course. :)
CONGRATULATIONS! What an incredible video, it felt like I was there. Your attitude was incredibly upbeat, even your low point. You didn't embrace the suck, so much as casually accept it. You've inspired me to train harder- like, a LOT harder- for my upcoming 50k/50 milers!
Thank you so much! Yes I decided to approach that race with a smile and never ever let go of it. I had trained a lot for this so I knew my body could take the abuse, so it all came down to nutrition and attitude. Things that are fairly controllable. It worked well. Are you doing Squamish 50/50? I've done it a few times, it's a super fun challenge!
Yes! Been waiting for this video ;-) I didn't think about it, but that dry climate must have been an adjustment for you. What a fun race. Great job getting it done!
Great video!!! I’m running Javelina this year. It will be my 1st 100 miler. I’d like to document my journey and film it like you did…. Any advice? Thanks! Tom
My main advice would be to have fun with it and actually use the camera as a running buddy. Talking to it kind forces you to keep that heart rate low. Which, overall is a great thing to do. See you there in October. I'll be back at it too!
Hey, I’m running Javelina for the first time this year and have also been using Nanak. May I ask what you took in each lap. Combo of hydration mix and waffles? Gels? How many bottles did you take each lap. Did you also have plain water? Great recap
Hello. Thank you for watching. For the first 2 laps I was alternating a Naak bar and a Naak Waffle every 30 minutes. And drinking NaaK energy mix on top of it, with water as well. Then Laps 3 to 5 I switched to just Waffles every 30 minutes and increased the dose of energy mix. There was no Naak gels back then. It all worked out very well for me. I was also ingesting a lot of salt pills and additional electrolytes, which I would advise you do as well. It's pretty crucial in this type of heat. Have fun out there! It's a fantastic race.
Hey Brice! Well done! Can you outline your exact nutrition/hydration strategy? I saw you were consuming a bar or a waffle every 30min or so...but what was your fluid intake like? I'm super interested in Naak now! Keep on keepin' on!
Thank you Sarah! Of course, I fuelled using Naak products only. I ran the first 6 hours using a bar (180 Calories) or a waffle (140 Calories) every 30 minutes, regardless of how I felt. Hungry or not. This was the non negotiable bit. On top of it, I drank 1 liter (sometimes 1.5 liter) of water every lap plus 1 liter of Naak Calorie Mix ( bout 500 Calories per lap). I was averaging 400 to 450 calories per hours by doing that. Every time I hit the headquarter, I would chug an entire flask of naak calorie mix (250 calories) just for good measure, as a bonus. And then repeat the entire process for 5 laps. Disclaimer, After lap 2, I decided to stop eating bars and eating only waffles and drinking calorie mix for the remaining 14 hours. Because the waffles are easier to chew and swallow and digest. It worked extremely well. I also was popping salt tabs every 3 hours or so, everytime I felt a tiny little cramp appear. I hope this helps. If you order something from naak, use promo code: BRICE, I believe you'll get a discount. Thank you again for watching! I appreciate the support!
@@briceferrestudio Hell yeah! I'll use your code FOR SURE. I'm not at 100mile distances yet, but 50K's will be a breeze with some reliable nutrition on board. Thanks for the insight, and stay warm and healthy.
hey dude - came across this video and your one from 2023. I'm doing this race next weekend are you doing it again? It seems you were doing a better job getting calories in in 2022, do you think that was just the heat difference that made it easier in 2022? I'm worried about the heat this year -- gonna be high of 88 degrees or so
Hi! No I won't be there this year, unfortunately. Yes, I somehow dealt with my electrolyte intake better in 2022, which resulted in me being able to process calories throughout the day without stomach issues. I messes up my electrolytes in 2023 and was not able to recover from that. So my only advice to you is to always drink electrolytes at Aid Station instead of just water. It will make a big difference in your ability to keep fueling until the temperature cools down at night. Have fun out there!
@@briceferrestudio Thanks! I did a 100k in January but this is my first 100 mile. Not sure how much you are into hiking but I have a hiking youtube channel!
Thank you so much. I was wearing the Salomon Sense Pro 5, which was absolutely perfect for this one! And I actually raced in my Salomon Phantasm, which are road shoes, but that I trained in for 8 months, so I knew this model would work well for me for the entire race. No shoe change for me. Javelina is non technical and can absolutely be run in road shoes. :)
Not too sure about that. I really ran by feel. It was very conservative pace, but I did not really slow down though. That's why my day was so successful, I believe. Slow and steady! :)
