The only issue I have had in the past 8 years is heat soak on those 120 days. The one thing ya gotta watch with these XJ's is the oil pressure.
It’s not really the gearing that’s the issue it’s just the fact that it won’t downshift when it should. I’ve had a lot of people suggest that I need to adjust the kickdown cable. I’m kinda jealous that you have a completely rust free XJ lol thanks for watching!
@@KCars You Missed the Point my friend. The computer isn't sure when to down shift due to the larger tires (It thinks its in the proper gear). You can adjust the cable but that could effect in town driving and shifting too soon. Just an FYI (Action/Reaction)
One thing about the gas mileage is to use gumout in the can that looks like sea foam. It must of took like maybe 8 bottles bottles but I did see an increase of 30 KM a tank that lasts to this very day. I run 91 grade gas and use one of those gumout bottles a month. My 4.0 runs like it’s brand new with absolutely no ticking or anything other than a nice idle. I’d highly recommend to anybody to get the brand new 4 hole injectors.
Very clean jeep, the cracking head is definitely something to be careful of, my previous Jeep didn’t run well and I’m 90% sure it’s cause it was cracked, maybe time to swap the motor for a stroker build! my current xj is a 99 and it has almost double the mileage of my previous jeep but runs way better with better fuel efficiency even though it has bigger tires.
I replaced the bottom end on my 2000 with 230k miles because the previous owner ran it low on oil. The original head looked brand new with no sign of cracking, so I did a valve grind to it and threw it right back on, and it's still doing great thousands of miles later. I think that lots of XJ owners trash their fan shrouds since they're prone to breaking (they're like 30 bucks new, not sure why you wouldn't just replace it) and run them low on coolant since the water pumps/thermostat housings tend to leak, run them low on coolant which causes them to overheat then they blame the head for it.
@@willthecardude6900 yea that very well could be the case, but even amc knew it was flawed cause they went back to the thicker head shortly after, in the 2000 to like 04 I believe (including the engines used in the wranglers) they made the casting too thin between each cylinder, so in an overheating situation it’s more prone to crack. But the engines for the most part are bullet proof anyways so you have to be seriously mistreating it to screw it up. But that fan shroud man, I hate how brittle they are…. Broke it on old Jeep luckily they are fine in my current xj.
@@jacob.woodward Yeah, a head shouldn't crack regardless of how bad it's overheated, I agree with that part but I think even a non TUPY head is fine as long as it's not badly overheated, my 240k head is a testament to that. I feel like a lot of people don't realize that the fan shroud is there for a reason though, I see so many people remove it, they're dirt cheap and the aftermarket one I got for 30 bucks actually directs air better than the stock one believe it or not since it's beefier.

A few years from now the only people that will still have properly running XJ's are the people who kept them stock, garaged and never lifted them. When that day comes they will have something that will be worth more than when it was brand new. These were never meant to be full-time off-road vehicles, they were meant to be small grocery getter vehicles that could become off-roaders in a pinch if the situation presented itself. You know, for all of those paranoid American soccer mom preppers back in the 80's and 90's. There was a massive blizzard in the Northeast of 1978 called the blizzard of 78'. Maybe they were thinking about this when they designed this, forst of it's kind small SUV back in the day.
They’re definitely good on road and off road. I’m sure there will still be modified XJs that are properly running in a few years, just depends on how well the owner took care of it
I have a 2000 xj I bought it last summer and it didn’t run properly when i bought it It overheated and the head cracked within the first 3 months the radiator also cracked And the ac didn’t work so we replaced the ac compressor. Sense putting a rebuilt head and replacing the radiator the only issues I’ve had are smaller common things. The window buttons on all passenger doors don’t work always. I believe the window lock malfunctions and must people just bypass it on all doors so they work you can get a new switch set for the drivers door but it’ll probably give out again My drivers window has been working off and on lately so I’m getting a new motor for it that should fix it. My knob for climate control only worked on full blast for the last few months and I ordered a blower resister to fix that but in the last week it quit working on the highest setting it won’t blow hot or cold ever. I’m still hoping the resister will fix it but I’m not sure lol. and after it overheated the electric fan was running always but today it quit so now I’m trying to figure out how to fix that😂 it also has the rear bumper rust and door rust and the headliner is sacking. I love my Jeep but it’s definitely been a work in progress I’m glad that I’m a person that enjoys working on cars and I want the experience and I’m thankful for it. But it can be frustrating if you let it or if you don’t have time or money to always be fixing. And also on the rear one of the top screws for your shock mount was twisted off when i bought my Jeep and that’s a common problem my cousin has a xj with the same issue. You can get a piece to fix it but again it’s another thing to have to find time to do
The problems you mentioned with highways are odd. I have a '98 4x4 Classic, stock ride height with 31's squeezed under there. I have no problems with kick down, acceleration, or braking, which is great considering I have to use the highway to get to town. Rust is no issue 'cause #ArizonaGang. Funnily enough though, as long as I'm on top of coolant and oil (which you should be anyway), I have no problems with overheating in the >100° summers here
Good to hear that you don’t have any issues. I definitely need to get my kickdown cable adjusted and see if that helps. I probably also need to get my brakes replaced as well. You’re lucky for having no rust issues lol. I’m getting most of the cooling system replaced next week as well as getting a coolant flush. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Patriot Blue XJ! AZ XJ here as well. 2k limited. Zero rust, but my patriot blue has lost the battle with the scorching sun. I may have it painted or do the tintable raptor liner. It was a beautiful color when clean and waxed. As long as the cooling system is maintained, I’ve never had an issue in the 100+ temps we see. I’ve had it for 8 years and I’ve been able to fix everything that broke, which hasn’t been much, in my driveway and I’m not a mechanic. These things are just easy to work on and there’s so much info out there to help you diagnose and fix them on your own.
Thanks! My favorite color for an XJ. I guess there’s a trade off with no rust, sometimes you have to deal with the fading paint because of the sun. And I agree they are pretty easy to work on even for me with little experience. Thanks for watching!

Worst is the heating. Mine runs amazing and never over heats through actual operation of the vehicle other than sitting idle at a red light in the summer. I did everything like new rad ,water pump, hoses, tranny cooler, new clutch fan. You could always pop the hood open a crack when crawling or trail riding. I personally think with all I’ve the above and hood vents that there will always be a small percentage of it running hot at an idle or 4 low.

Should I replace the clutch, radiator, and temp sensor even if they seem to be working normally? I’ve always heard people say “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
It wouldn't hurt. While you're at it, get under the dash on the passenger side, and check the heater core. It is likely the original piece, and could be clogged, hiding a potential leak. But definitely clean it either way.
The rear wheel bearings go out and make a grinding howling sound. I've had two Cherokees '90 and '94 and both went bad. If left too long you'll need to replace the rear axles. KEEP WHEELING!
I have a 1998 XJ with 483000 kilometers on it (300000 miles). I had the same issue with the cooling fans but had them replaced when my Jeep stalled out on me when I was stuck in traffic in the dead of summer heat. The only problem I continue to have is needing to replace ball joints every year. I do drive a lot. I think you should have avoided the 2001. 97 to 99 is the way to go. Nice Jeep though!
Thanks! So far I haven’t had any major issues with my 2001. Never stalled out on me but it did have some idling issues when I had it out in around 95 degree weather when the electric fan wasn’t working
From my understanding the best year is the 2001 because final year car models get all the best parts that are laying around since they have to use them up before closing.

Yup. And a lot of people say that the XJ handles well but I feel like those people have never driven anything that actually handles well and don’t have anything to compare it to. It’s great at doing what it was built to do. Thanks for watching!
Interesting I Would never go back to the Clutch fan with the level of work you are willing to go i would go to two electric fans there is the slot for the stock fan and there is one hole to drill a bracket that needs to be filed and you are is Better MPG more horse power (or less wasted from the clutch fan) better cooling over all a good choice and it looks like the rock guard is missing from the fuel tank if so i really look to replace that the tank in gust the right location for a rock Strike the Kick down cable adjustment is easy to do but the big secret is that the jeep can do about 90 miles an hour the hangup is that the suspension system was designed in the 1930s and even with MODs is not really designed for speeds above 60 miles per hour thanks for the look at your Jeep
I’ve thought about doing two electric fans and getting rid of the clutch fan but with this one I wanna stay completely stock with the cooling system. Are you referring to a skid plate for the gas tank? I didn’t know that they came with one stock. Thanks for watching!
Not to knock this video but you talk about the cooling system a lot, but here so more info for you since my brother bought a 94 cherokee sport and all he wants to do is drive it. 1. Ignition switch it when out so the key will get stuck and won't move sometimes it will or won't at all you can find it on the steering shaft when you remove the gauge clutcher it's a pain but it there. 2. Oil filter adapter O-ring his jeep is leaking like crazy so you'll need a new O-ring I recommend get it from O'Reilly, a T60 star bit tool, and a wrench that will hold it you'll have to knock out the T60 out the socket it comes with or jack up engine if you can it's a very tight spot to work in. 3. Is a bonus if you're lifting your jeep and add daddy fat sacks tires on it for the love of God make sure you mount you rubber brake lines in a good spot so tires don't eat them that how my brother bought it and it was a pain fixing it because the previous owner I guess was like send it end up fixing one side and breaking the other side not the rubber but the line itself because none of them were mounted and they were just there
@@KCars yeah hope not I still haven't fix the O-ring issue because it's tight in the there you real have not even a inch to do it plus you'll need a breaker bar guy in a video I saw said they used red tread locker from the factory thought it was bs but it's not I guess

Looks almost identical to my XJ. Love the Patriot Blue paint. Keep up the good work and take good care of that XJ there getting harder to find. 👍
My favorite XJ color. Will do, thanks for watching!
You can get a piece to fix it but again it’s another thing to have to find time to do
It’s definitely a never ending project🤷🏼♂️ gotta love em though
@@KCars Of course, my man, you've got some good XJ content, it keeps me coming back.
@@first6982 Mine is Hunter Green. Which looks great on it's own, but I think it looks better with the wear and tear. On my fenders, the top coat has kinda worn away and now that gold speckle base coat is showing. I might let it wear down a little more before I get my clear coat refreshed
I have a few questions, how tall is your lift what kind of wheels and tires do you have?
3 inch lift, ProComp series 51 15x8 steel wheels in gloss black, and ProComp xtreme MT2 31x10.50 tires
Hey nice headlights drop the link or where did you get them! I have the same color Patriot Blue
Thanks!
quakeled.com/5x7-inch-headlight-39-watt-high-low-jeep-yj-xj-tempest-series-quake-led.html
I’m replacing most of the cooling parts next week. Hopefully I won’t have to worry about any overheating.
Cool. Mine never sits at the middle section of the gauge. It’s always lower. This Jeep’s the best in the fall.
Mine usually always sits at 210. And I agree they definitely perform way better in cooler weather
where did you buy the hose that was brittle? i am looking for one
Genuine Chrysler 4854265 Crankcase Vent to Intake Tube www.amazon.com/dp/B007NO3XD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_43TP6B088ZTHBH1YVCAS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
That is a CLEAN looking XJ! Really like the simple looking setup. Do you have a lift? And what size on the tires?
Thanks! Yes, 3 inches. 31x10.50 tires
Do a coolant system flush then replace Radiator, fan clutch, all radiator hoses, electric fan, water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing and new temp sensor and add trans cooler and she’s good to go!
The clutch and sensor seem to be good and I’m having the radiator inspected to see if it should be replaced as well
Whats the need in replacing the thermostat housings?
To get a new and fresh housing because of corrosion
Great video and info
Thanks for watching!
Hello good day, I greet you from Mexico ... What is the cost of the jeep cherokee xj
Mine was $3500 when I got it about a year and a half ago
@@KCars Ok friend, I understand ... But you can still get a 2001 jeep cherokee sport ... I'm interested in a cherokee sport or xj
Yes, I have the Cherokee sport, which is an XJ
@@KCars how much
Look at my first reply
Don't forget the PCV valve
Ahh yes, that’s definitely one as well
The rear wheel bearings go out and make a grinding howling sound. I've had two Cherokees '90 and '94 and both went bad. If left too long you'll need to replace the rear axles. KEEP WHEELING!
I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for that, thanks!
Different people will give you different perspectives. Some say it’s the 1999 because that was the last year before they switched to coilpacks
Hi Do you need some great lighting upgrade for this Jeep to help you better driving, off-road and adventure. We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Another WV jeep youtuber lets gooo
The mountain state💯
Check the water leak on pasager side
It doesn’t have any noticeable leaks
I agree u have to give urself extra time to react and turn, ect. I drive on the highway every day with no sway bars on my ZJ. Ur not driving a sports car drive like it.
Yup. And a lot of people say that the XJ handles well but I feel like those people have never driven anything that actually handles well and don’t have anything to compare it to. It’s great at doing what it was built to do. Thanks for watching!
Oil pressure?
Haven’t had any issues with oil pressure
Paint the end caps. Black Paint spray it on and wipe it off. Or paint them with bed liner paint.
I thought about painting them but I’m looking for a more OEM look so I’ll probably just get brand new ones
Just use wipe new !!!
Also just subscribed!
Thanks!
@@KCars no problem at all! Keep up the good videos, I have some jeep stuff on my channel to 😎
Interesting I Would never go back to the Clutch fan with the level of work you are willing to go i would go to two electric fans there is the slot for the stock fan and there is one hole to drill a bracket that needs to be filed and you are is Better MPG more horse power (or less wasted from the clutch fan) better cooling over all a good choice
and it looks like the rock guard is missing from the fuel tank if so i really look to replace that the tank in gust the right location for a rock Strike
the Kick down cable adjustment is easy to do but the big secret is that the jeep can do about 90 miles an hour the hangup is that the suspension system was designed in the 1930s and even with MODs is not really designed for speeds above 60 miles per hour thanks for the look at your Jeep
3. Is a bonus if you're lifting your jeep and add daddy fat sacks tires on it for the love of God make sure you mount you rubber brake lines in a good spot so tires don't eat them that how my brother bought it and it was a pain fixing it because the previous owner I guess was like send it end up fixing one side and breaking the other side not the rubber but the line itself because none of them were mounted and they were just there
Thanks for the additions. Luckily I haven’t had any of these issues (yet)
@@KCars yeah hope not I still haven't fix the O-ring issue because it's tight in the there you real have not even a inch to do it plus you'll need a breaker bar guy in a video I saw said they used red tread locker from the factory thought it was bs but it's not I guess
Dang sounds like it’s gonna be a fun job lol
Bro adjust your throttle cable it’s so easy, I own a 95 and it literally has a button to adjust it. When it is loose, that thing will go, seriously.
And I suggest replacing your battery terminal cables before they rust off. You’ll probably get a cleaner start up too.
Is that the same thing as the kickdown cable? A lot of people have suggested that I need to do that
Battery terminal cables wouldn’t be a bad idea
@@KCars look up k suspension 2 gauge battery cable upgrade 100% worth it
Will do, thanks!
Afternoon mr k cars I believe your downshift issue is your throttle valve cable.
Is that the same as the kickdown cable?
Just replaced my electric fan, and that back hatch is always annoying
Which back hatch?
where's your 710 cap (oil)
It came with a different one than stock
For the age off the jeep it's time to replace parts/ not knowing the mileage
Anything specific you recommend?
My 99 Xj is the best vehicle ever built...I have almost 400,000 miles and it's just like new...
These things are tanks💪
Also rust on the passenger floor and the crankshaft sensor that fail twice in my xj.
True rust in general is a problem, luckily I haven’t had my crankshaft sensor fail yet🤞
Seems like a good guy however too much mumbling get to the point! Quick to the point! I got a 96 4.0 2 wheel drive welded rear end ain't stuck it yet
Sweet, sounds like a fun Jeep!
Damn thought u had a unicorn too I knew that paint was too clean to be stock
To my knowledge it’s the original paint. I just did a paint correction on it last year: th-cam.com/video/VKLF3mTOClc/w-d-xo.html
actually 2001 was not the last year 2005 or 2007 was look up jeep Beijing BJ213/ 2021/ BJ7250 and Jeep 2500/ 2700
Interesting
I have a 2000 XJ with a rebuilt 4.0 from a '99. The only issue with parts compatibility was the coil pack. The '99 head doesn't have the bosses to secure the coil pack to it. So far though it's not been an issue.
Good to hear

OK. It's a money pit.

Not bad
the cracking heads were in the years before 98 they were weaker head you have the stronger head on your jeep i cracked mine on my 94
I think the 2000s and 2001s had the issue
You need to regear
Top 50 problems you mean. lol
