Preordered now. Can't wait to get it for my Retron 5 !! I do hope in the future Hyperkin makes a Turbo Grafx 16 adapter. I mean the Retro Freak is cool, but it overheats like crazy.
Man! I really wish we had this when we made our complete game gear collection video. We had to do the old film the person playing the game gear trick haha. Great video!
This is surreal. Your thumbnail is exactly what my Retron 5 looks like, complete with the Sword of Hajya. I was very scared for a moment that you were spying on me.
actually this is just a rebranded retro Freak gear converter. the only difference is that the retron versions top will accept USA SMS carts. and yes this will partially work on a genesis/MD. it will work with the SMS slots, it just wont work with the game gear side as the genesis doesn't have the hardware to run game gear games/software. hope this answers people's questions.
Does the Hyperkin 3-in-1 Adapter works with the Mega Retron HD since it came after Retron 5 and plus, I did heard the Sega Power Base Convertor fits in but it blocks the cord?
This is a better idea for Hyperkin. Thanks to them, our retro gaming will be more alive then ever. For one wish, I wish they would make a cartridge for the Sega 32x, and play all the Sega 32x games including Knuckles Chaotix. Nice video as well man. :)
For some reason this video reminded me of Solar Striker on the original Gameboy. Haven't thought about that for decades, and man that game over music was so good.
I play sega genesis master system and game gear when I was a kid and I still play them I still have all system Thankyou very much for sharing your video thanks again
I had all the sega cared games in my original collection that was lost to a house fire . I was so proud when I finally got the last sega card I needed for my collection and I'm hoping that I'll get them back one day.
The Virtual Boy!!! i want to be able to play those games without burning my eyes out. it has a very small library so it might not be in Hyperkin's best interest but make it happen Metal Jesus.
MetalJesusRocks Doubt that is happening with how dead the 3DS VC has been outside of Snes games for New 3DS users, and with this also maybe being the last major year for the 3DS as well.
I just bougt Sega master system 2. I changed the RF cable with a brand new with ticker wire. It is close to the phono cable in quality as possible. It works perfect on my HD tv. I only have the console for two weeks and i bought 23 games to it. One of the game is Wonder boy "the Dragon`s trap". So far i love this system. Nice converter, it`s sad that this adapter only can be used on Retron 5. So i will not buy this adapter. Because i hate rom hacked consoles. I will make a review of the games i have during the weekend :-) Great review, thanks :-)
I think this will be a HUGE blow for the upcoming Retroblox system. Still...no turbografx so, I´ll probably want to see that for the next adaptor. I love my RetroN 5, been playing it for years now, very convenient for vacations and game capture. I´ll will get one of these for myself for sure. Great review MJ, all the best to you. A big hug from Portugal ;)
I never had any desire to pick up a Retron 5 (or any other clone system), as I'm happy playing my retro games on my CRT on the original hardware. That said, I'm going to pick up a Retron 5 & that adapter for the ability to play the Game Gear games. I'm a huge fan & collector of the Master System, and I've always wanted to collect for the Game Gear, but I had no interest in the console itself since they tend to die easily. This will give me the ability to play the games now on my HD tv. I'm sold!!!! :)
Woah woah woah. Hold on just a darn second here. Did I spy a shopkeeper who was a pig with an eye-patch, neckerchief, and striped purple paisley shirt that was smoking a cigarette? "SHOPPING PLEASE" indeed. That's awesome
You just mentioned my most favourite Master System games, Wonderboy 3 the Dragons Trap, Outrun and Phantasy Star. I only had 1 Master System game on card which was Ghost House and was a lot cheaper than the games on cart.
I met the programmer (Omar Cornut) working on the Wonderboy III remake a few months ago, and I was lucky enough to test the game. The musics are great, some of the original sounds are still here. The graphics are completely different but the physics is exactly the same. The coins are falling exactly the same way as on Master System. Oh and it will be released on the Nintendo Switch :) And most probably on Steam too
hey MJR, just a little tip for early PS1 play, avoid the Scorpions when you're low lvl and focus on Swarms until you can buy an IRN SWD for 75 Mesetas in the southern sector of town, below the Spaceport.
I realy like the Retron 5. I have a job and i am a father. So time to play video games is realy limeted. The Retron 5 allows me to play for an hour, safe and continue the next day. Its a huge adventage for me. I own a Master system power base converter and it also works with the Retron. Butt its cool to see that Hyperkin made a converter for those who like the Master system and Game gear. Both systems are realy overlooked by most.
So, MJR. I couldn't help but notice the molding is curved to accommodate the rounded shape on the top of the model 1 Genesis. I assume this means you can play Master System cart and card games on an actual Genesis.
I have something like this for my Retro Freak. I've had a lot of fun with it. I can recommend Aleste (Shooter) and Golden axe warrior (Zelda Clone) for the master system.
@MetalJesusRocks I really enjoy your channel, been watching your videos almost exclusively the last couple of days. Have you ever thought of doing a buying guide for the Dreamcast? Also, what are your opinions on the Dreamcast?
I had a Master System, but man the few games that I had for it just weren't enough for me to keep collecting for it, and pretty much that all applies to the Game Gear as well. Though it's neat that this is made, but if we can get an fpga version of the retron with even more supported systems that would be amazing.
I wish that this adapter was designed to be inserted over the Famicom Slot instead of the Genesis Slot, that would help players like me get the feel(ing) that 5 completely different platforms are all combined into one single-package console.

Not too much into the Master System but I enjoy the Game Gear quite a bit and the 3 in 1 is a good reason for me to pick up the RetroN 5 whenever I devide to get one. Also, a hidden gem for the Game Gear is Tempo jr. A silly game but worth a look if you don't have it. There's also a Tempo game for the 32x
I had only played Samurai Showdown on GG for years, until I came across an arcade cab back in 01'. I beat it, and any takers, on one quarter. Twas a fine day.
I'm very excited by this, not knowing about the adapter but having a Retron 5. I'd REALLY like to save in Dragon Crystal as one of my favourite Game Gear Games. I also have Miracle Warriors just sitting here with no way to play it (I know about emu's, it's not the same for me). Even as an 'old school gamer', I like Super Eagle emulation, makes the games a lot more playable on HD. Hyperkin owes you a kickback, jus' sayin'. Kinda puzzled why Genesis 32x isn't supported, but whatevs.
So even with the three cartridge and card ports you still CAN'T play Japanese Sega Master System cartridges, UNLESS you plug a second adapter, the Japanese cart to American system adapter into the cartridge port on this adapter. Kinda short-sighted, considering how much effort they put into Famicom compatibility.
Am I the only/1st one to notice that in the shots showing him placing the master system carts into the adapter they seem to be sitting in there a bit crooked, with the left side of the cart sitting obviously higher than the right? Or it may just be the camera angle, IDK.
I wonder does that thing support the master gear converter? Not that you'd ever want to do that because that thing does play master system games, but it just be interesting to know if a master gear converter would work on it
I love to see a console that plays Sega CD Sega Master System Sega Mega Drive Sega Genesis Sega Saturn GameCube Wii Wii u Switch 3ds DS GBA GBC GB PS1 Ps2 Ps3 Ps4 Xbox original Xbox 360 Xbox 1
Sorry if you already mentioned it; but you know the master system powerbase does work with the retron? That's how I play my carts and cards. I would like to know your view on retroblox.
Eventual Systems for Hyperkin has to be the N64, Atari Jaguar, Atari 2600/Intellivison/Coleco, Nintendo DS, Sega 32X and then getting to CD system based games and making a new system for CD game systems.
I would like to see a Turbo Grafx adapter or maybe even a disc drive attatchment like the N64DD. They will probably do the latter with a follow-up console.
Since this uses emulation, does that mean games like Game Gear Shinobi have the same graphical glitches that they have on other emulators? In this case, I am specifically referring to the glitched rain layer on the ship level.
TG16/PCE of course! Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision would be pretty neat as well I have an old collection and these VERY old original 1st gen systems cost a bundle and are a royal pain to hook up to modern TVs.
It's nice that they added the extra support for the Retron, but did they have to make the adapter so tall? For stability reasons alone it would've been better to make it sit flat on top of the system with each cartridge slot being back to back. Besides, it's not like you're gonna leave that thing plugged in when you want to play carts from another system.

MetalJesusRocks Sega CD/32x adapter!

I love your sarcasm!!! :)
Thanks for showing gameplay. Can't stand when people talk about games without gameplay. Metal jesus u are the man! :-)
Thank you Jason I really enjoyed this episode. I love when you show lots of game play in a review style.
It takes a lot of time to capture all the gameplay footage myself, but it's worth it. Thanks for noticing!
MetalJesusRocks yeah man, you did a great job on this vid. I went out and bought Halley Wars and Sylvan tale thanks to this vid.
I loved the Master System, good to see it hasn't been forgotten :)
The next Retron needs to be able to play N64.
Yes and Vectrex!
True, hopefully they can do something about it. Its all wishful thinking anyway.
There is fear that a Nintendo 64 clone system or adapter would lead to lawsuits from Nintendo. It is not quite old enough yet.
they are not perfect but i would also go also with the current state
Just get an N64 and the Everdrive 64 v3 and you'll be set for life!
This is something I could use for my Master System collection! Awesome to see it in action. Thanks!
Now that they have Master Card support, now we need TG-16 HuCard support.
That would kick ass!
How about a clone console that plays card based games? Like master system cards, PC engine hucards, TG16 cards and supergrafx cards.
The Retrofreak does that.
i bet this adapter makes recording gameplay footage WAY easyer, witch is a plus, i want to make a gamegear home console, thats one of my goals in life
I am not a retro gamer...but I don't know why I love your vids so much.you are awesome.truly metaljesus rocks mann!
Game Gear games looks fantastic on this :o
This is surreal. Your thumbnail is exactly what my Retron 5 looks like, complete with the Sword of Hajya. I was very scared for a moment that you were spying on me.
WOOHOO!!!!! The Game Gear is my favorite handheld, so this is amazing! It'll really help me with reviewing Game Gear games.
Another great video, MJR! Thanks for checking out mine too. You've helped my approach so much!

I enjoy the fact that a huge metal dude like MJR loves cute 'em ups. I would LOVE an adapter for the Vectrex. Make it so, Hyperkin!
Watching your videos is part of my daily routine, keep up the great work!
My life is so much better with new videos from MJR every Friday!

Excellent review. Thanks for showing multiple examples of the filtering impact on games. Quite the effect (positive, IMO) on Game Gear games!
I play sega genesis master system and game gear when I was a kid and I still play them I still have all system Thankyou very much for sharing your video thanks again
still no 32X adapter :(
That would be great....along with Turbo Grafix
TurboGrafix/PC Engine and the 32X are shit!, confirmed by the Angry Video Game Nerd.
That would be nice. There are some great games to be had on 32x.
Get a Mega Everdrive

started saving for my retron 5. I'm big into megadrive collecting but this will increase my future library without having to buy all the systems
Wow those games look awesome! I really enjoyed the look of the motorcycle game
The Virtual Boy!!! i want to be able to play those games without burning my eyes out. it has a very small library so it might not be in Hyperkin's best interest but make it happen Metal Jesus.
Nintendo should just release Virtual Boy games in the eShop for the 3DS. It would be PERFECT!
MetalJesusRocks Doubt that is happening with how dead the 3DS VC has been outside of Snes games for New 3DS users, and with this also maybe being the last major year for the 3DS as well.
MetalJesusRocks, Nintendo doesn't wanna remind people of their biggest failure, so that's not happening.
Maybe not everyone single one, but at the _very_ least, they should have salvaged Virtual Boy Wario Land.
I've always wanted to play Jack Bros, I'd be so insanely
happy if Nintendo released it in the 3DS VC

Silly question time? Does this work on a real Sega Genesis?
It does not. All of the emulation is happening in the Retron 5 itself.
+MetalJesusRocks :(
MetalJesusRocks your kidding !? I have to buy a retron 5 just to play game gear decently?
either that or get a refurbished Game Gear.
The Gaming Paladin I see there is a bunch on 3ds. I might just have to break down and do that instead of $200 for a retron5 and adapter
hey MJR, just a little tip for early PS1 play, avoid the Scorpions when you're low lvl and focus on Swarms until you can buy an IRN SWD for 75 Mesetas in the southern sector of town, below the Spaceport.
You can also play Sega Master System games on the Retron 5 before the adapter with the Power Base Converter for the Genesis
they need to do a turbo grafx 16 adapter would have awesome if the card reader on this adapter was able to also read tg hu cards
That was my first though when I saw this.

What about FM sound compatibility for the Master System games?
Got my adapter today. The Retron 5 says nothing but "No Cart inserted", and none of my Game Gear games are working.
Geeez, I still have a Game Gear. Been quite awhile since I played Lion King on it.
Looks great! 'The Immortal' John Hancock was showing this off as well.
That filter is unreal. so good.
Wow.. I wouldn't had thought that with the low pixel count on game gear games, that the dithering filter would look so good... But even as an old folk myself, having grown up on the game gear... Sega CD adapter all the way!

I usually don't like to use filters in emulators because they tend to make the graphics look kind of blurry. A year or so ago, I found a page where they had a bunch of different filter examples, including some new ones, where you could swipe the mouse over an image and see the filtered and unfiltered image. Most of them had the typical blurry look, but there were a couple that looked really good.
