- Do you think you've got the formula for the ULTIMATE Macintosh System 7.1 install? Because Eric Helgeson sure thinks he does!
Read Eric's guide here:

I'd be interested in hear your thoughts on this setup, and what your MUST HAVE customizations are. Leave 'em in the comments!

Uh, 0:27 ... the ultimate what now?
Just seeing who's awake ;)
Hyeah.. I was like _RUH ROH_
Every Macintosh should run the Ultimate Windows 7.1 LOL!
The best 68k Mac is an Amiga
This.
Flashing the clock colons is how you know if your Mac has locked up. No flashy? No workee!
I managed to make a fully functional ppc 8.5.1 including ps printing (real, direct) on SheepShaver however it is quite slow on an intel mac mini running Catalina. slower than a good G4. I see that your 7.1 is quite snappy, on what machine / os is this Basilisk running onto ?
What's the purpose of the Open Transport stuff? Doesn't seem to enable TCP/IP or anything.
Nice. The only thing that seems to be missing for that is something for customizing the desktop background. As I recall System 7.1's options for that are pretty basic and limited to simple B&W dot patterns. Not sure if anyone ported 7.5's Desktop Patterns Control panel (the official one won't let you use it in 7.1 sadly) but I found DeskPicture can do mostly what I want even though it's not as simple to use as Desktop Patterns was.
I also managed to rebuild a MacOS 8 boot image into a Legacy Recovery CD. The main reason I did this was so I could get that useful "C" key functionality that the newer era Macs have for my LC III. Many older 68ks like my LC III don't have the hold down C key to boot from CD option available in ROM. Instead there you have to use a CD that has the driver with a snag patch that adds that. So I took a MacOS 8 image and stripped it down and put all the Legacy Recovery CD stuff in and now I can use C key to boot to it on my LC III. Sure I could either use Startup control panel or the horridly long key combo for booting a specific SCSI ID on but the C key was a nice simple key combo one could use on the newer macs so great to have it on my LCIII with that specific CD. Someone should make a utility that can add that to any CD image. Would love to make all my bootable CDs have that in the future without much hassle. :D
It wasn't easy to test that by the way. Basilisk II doesn't accurately emulate the C key combo so had to switch to QEMU's experimental 68k build which had some pretty terrible mouse emulation that made it almost unusable but it was just barely useable enough for me to make sure the C key thing was working as intended. I had made like 2 coasters before I finally decided to setup QEMU for this by the way. I have a CD-RW disk but obviously the external Apple 300 Plus drive I have wouldn't read it. (it's a 300i Plus put into an enclosure but aside from that it's basically a 300 Plus just without the little apple logo stamped onto it's bezel. The 300i was meant to be used inside cases so I guess they omitted that from that version of the 300)
Oh protip for those wanting to burn CD-Rs that a Apple 300 Plus can read. I recommend using 650mb disks. I've been burning mine at 1x on a Microsolutions Backpack printer port external drive from one of my vintage PCs though I would guess the burn speed is less important. But I do know the modern 700MB CD-Rs it will have trouble reading. Get some older 650MB disks. My drive seems to be happy with them and reads them just as well as official CDs. :D
Ive got a mac thats running this atm and i need to delete some big files to free up space but idk how to delete files, does anyone here know cuz i cant find out how
How much space do you need to free up?
@@RonsCompVids its got about 14 mb free now cuz i called my friend over and we worked it out but i was going to transfer the old data onto floppy disks to preserve it
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this Ron. I completely missed this during MARCHintosh 2021.
As did I! I went back and found I had it bookmarked, but never read it during last year's event. I hope folks chime in with their favorite addons for 7.1!
What? What about After Dark? Those screens need saving after all 😀
I have a question:
So basically i am what the society call a "Dumass" and decided to try install System Finder (any version) on a non mac, alias, an pc...
Is this possible?
First of all, there is no need to put yourself down. We all started somewhere.
If you want to try out retro Mac stuff without owning a retro Mac, check out Basalisk II, SheepShaver or QEMU.
Thanks for posting these files to Macintosh Garden! Running on my Performa 475 and it looks really good.
same machine here
I do wonder if someone has made an img for a pi
Back in the day, I used to run almost these exact modifications... I maxed out my low-spec Performa 5200CD with System 7.5.5 and all of this stuff -- plus QuickTime and Kaleidoscope (to run my favourite customized Windows themes) and various pieces of shareware. It was an orderly carnival, and the most fun I've ever had computing... I've yet to top that feeling, even to this day.
That's a great story, thank you for sharing it! Those "feels" are a big part of why I got back into the hobby.
So many gems here! That 2020 patch was really helpful! Too bad it can't fix the pandemic too lol
If we could just uninstall the pandemic, that would be greaaaaaaat.
I remember there was also a way to implement almost everything from system 7 into system 6.0.8 and it would fly on machines like the IIsi, there was a tutorial somewhere many years ago, might still be up on some archive website or whatever, anyway nice video
That's really interesting. B&W Macs limited to 4MB of RAM would really take advantage of a setup like that.
I've been using SetDate 1.1 instead of the 2040 patch.
I can’t recall the reason but this appears to work better.
I don't run above System 6 often but when I do....I'll try to inspire myself from this guide and video
System 7 has its perks... especially with games that absolutely require it :)
@@RonsCompVids for sure. But it also breaks compatibility with some olden stuff that was programmed outside of Apple's guidelines and need some o'that sweet undiscovered frontier System 1-3 with hardcoded ram locations!
Love this layout and this video!
Thank you, sir!
System 7.6.1 is the best of the System 7 releases.
7.1.6?!? ...or 7.6.1?
@@RonsCompVids Oops corrected in edit. It's a hard to find release for some odd reason. It's the last and most stable of the System 7 releases.
