actually, I do work a lot with calipers myself you can get a better fit esp.using internal calipers, rocking them, you can't rock verniers like that,and calipers can stand any abuse, all of his finished work was interference fit, but what bothered me a lot was dropping that shaft across the lathe bedways and using hammers on races
reminded me when I was engineer on a tug, we went into dry dock to pull prop shafts, it took a whole day to remove a coupling, it must have been shrunk on, this was in a German yards so we had all the gear, even with jacks, heat and packing the shaft in dry ice, that bastard coupling , was a fair Bastard
