Thanks for covering off the Godzilla angle. I was actually going to ask if the Type 74 ever engaged in combat with The King of the Monsters, or any of the other Japanese monsters, but you answered this important question at the end.
Type 74 is a good tank and would still be useful for some forces today. It is light and mobile enough to provide fire support in rough terrain. Personally I think that Japan should sell all of them to the Philippines for a bargain price (scrap metal equivalent cost). Of course they are dated for tank on tank battles but can still destroy other armored vehicles, fortifications, and soft targets. Type 74 has been well liked by Japanese users and deserves a second life somewhere where it can be of some use.
Japan should build more Type 10 with an active protection system added in lieu of some of the modular add on armor. It could replace the Type 74 and Type 90 still in service. Supplementing with their wheeled gun platform is fine but they also need to modernize their tank force.
Lmfao the elusive "tank on tank battle" that never happens in reality. Heard that Ukrainians almost exclusively load their western-delivered MBTs with HE instead of AP? Take a wild guess why that is.
@@baraka629I mean, to be fair, a Tank's job first and foremost is to support the infantry in an armoured thrust fighting in combined arms (at least this is how tanks have been used doctrinally, depends on the doctrine too, but tanks were created to support the infantry) so loading then with HE is understandable. MBTs are pretty much jack of all trades tanks anyways so they just incorporated many other features of the old norms for tanks and the separate tank destroyers which were specifically made to kill tanks, it's just that the MBTs are capable of either infantry support or Anti-tank, making them better than previous generations of tanks
@@poikoi1530 not really? I mean tanks do support infantry but that's not really what they're made for anymore, it would be more accurate to say they also support infantry. Japanese naval ammo in WWII and the armor made for its warships had extremely high levels of quality control (not necessarily the best designs, but they made them to the accepted standard very closely) -- better than most foreign manufacturers in some categories, such as the extremely thick face-hardened armor plates made for the YAMATO Class battleships, which had a very uniform hardness pattern, most especially difficult with plates as thick as 26" (!!!!) that were well above the thicknesses made by any foreign manufacturer. The unusual resistance of some experimental Japanese armor (made after battleship production had ceased during the middle and end of WWII and the naval armor engineers could now experiment based on their own modern ideas) was so profound that in the reports on it by the US Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, Virginia, after their own penetration tests in the latter half of 1940s, the US test personnel actually said that since they did not know how such good results were even possible with plates made of standard metals (the Japanese were using regular armor steels and just trying out new ways to strengthen and manufacture plates by various unusual heat and mechanical working treatments), the final paragraph in the final report on the US Navy testing of Japanese heavy naval armor was forced to state that it was now obvious that the US Navy experts on armor design did not understand how face-hardened armor works, which was an amazingly honest (and profoundly embarrassing) thing to say in an official report! THAT is the level of Japanese engineering and is a true warning about what the Japanese were going to do to several US industries post-war...
Something about those large diameter road wheels and curved frontal turret armor akin to Russian designs, blended with the extended turret bustle, and M60/Leo 1 like hull design, just takes the best looking features of the tanks of the time to make one of the sexiest tank designs which will forever be timeless.

Very beautiful aesthetically. Sleek looking and possibly still has worth fighting in areas where heavy tanks cannot move through. Maybe with an upgraded engine, add on armor, and advanced fire control system, it may suit countries like the Philippines
If they combine hard AT resistant top armor & turret armor, they could create a crablike design where the tank would sit itself low into soil & make itself an incredibly hard target. Think about it.

Why does the driver sit on the left of Japanese MBT's if they drive on the left like in the U.K.?
Have you done a video on the French AMX-30?
Very beautiful aesthetically. Sleek looking and possibly still has worth fighting in areas where heavy tanks cannot move through. Maybe with an upgraded engine, add on armor, and advanced fire control system, it may suit countries like the Philippines
The tank might be a bit too big cuz philippines is hella cramped
@@Unknown_bnuy still, probably the smallest and lightest main battle tank built.
This tank would actually work really well for my country, especially that most of our roads cant even handle anything over 40 tons.
In the event you see this could you possibly aid to the title (and breakdown of early post WW2 Japanese take arm)
If they combine hard AT resistant top armor & turret armor, they could create a crablike design where the tank would sit itself low into soil & make itself an incredibly hard target. Think about it.
Looks like a really wide M60 tank. As a kid I thought they were M60's tanks.
Cough cough, odyssey, you MAY want to gander at that
Can you do a vid on the Type 61? There isnt much on youtube about it outside of video games like wt or wot
I ve done many 10k damage games in my STB-1 in WOT, that thing is crazy
good dpm 💪
Hey Mat could you please to a video on the MRH-90 Taipan please it would be heaps good, thanks
Though I'm not of expert on like some of you are or think you are I was an armor crewman on an M60 A3 tank loader Gunner, and it was a pretty powerful tank even with the 105 mm main gun but since then they've upgraded it quite a bit but still I don't think there's any tank that can stand against the a10 warthog it is a tank buster.
I had no idea of what exactly was going on with Japanese tanks in post WW2, till I started playing WinSPMBT. A game which is still updated. For me one of the most beautiful tanks in one of the best wargames.
BTW, who knew an island nation would ever create tanks, right? right? *cough* UK *cough* .
I have some memory of seeing a Japanese WW2 tank that they where wotking on but it didn't get done in time but it did look like for the era modern tank. Other then that Japanese tanks where horrible obsolete.
Hello mat can you make a video on Pakistani tracked vehicles?
Strv 103: “Who are you?”
Type 74: “I’m you but with rotatable turret”
"I'm you but a decade later and worse." Reminder that this entered service about the same time as the Leopard 2 and M1 was coming into service.
@@Ragedaonenlonely Was it actually worse thought?
I mean, it has an actual turret.
@@EdyAlbertoMSGT3 Yes. In many, many ways. I could go into it in more detail but it would be a very long list. Suffice it to say, the turret (which was still of a questionable benefit given stabilizers were still not all there yet) and some fcs it is mostly just inferior in most respects. Well, I guess it was a pretty mobile vehicle too so it did have that going for it.
@@Ragedaonenlonely
You can’t compare a Leo2 and Abrams with type 74 as they are nearly double the weight of type 74.
That is like comparing a Lion with a Cheetah.
Plus type 74 is more than 3 times less expensive than the two, and slightly cheaper then Strv 103. They all have their pros and cons.
It would be nice if you had showed the price of military equipment you are reviewing/ analyzing on.
Price is also important when it comes to military technology and equipment.
Hope you see this comment
for japanese price became irrelevant. japan weapon absurdly expensive coz they mustnot sell their weapon at all. otherwise they might produce it like toyota and rules the market with best bang for buck stuff
The Type 74 only needed 1 gear for reverse unlike French and Italian tanks that have 7 gears for reverse and only one for forward.
what?
Damn, that opening music is very stirring!!! 😮
As a Kaiju fan I've seen so many of these destroyed
Looks like a well built machine .
Now this is Japanese music (although vaguely), props to you Matt
I used to play WOT(before 6.0)and the STB-1 is definitely the most beautiful tank in the game! 😍👌🏽
Thanks Matsimus. I never heard of this tank before but I am now in love - that suspension!
If the Sheridan, the S-tank and the M60 patton had a threesome, then the Type 74 would be the offspring.
Don't think about that scenario too long though, or you may barf.
What is that reflective, old crt tv like object box right side of cannon?
How does the armour do against determined tentacle attack?
Love your content
Good on them for persisting with indigenous designs and all that that entails!
Could you please review the Ripsaw EV3 F1 and its suspension.
Just wondering if they had problems with the tracks. Track tension seem to slack at times
Maybe that's caused by the suspension itself?
@@Bakotcha yes, hence my question
@@jantschierschky3461 I mean, the tension of the track might seem slack / loose at times to compensate for the suspension change itself "maybe"
@@Bakotcha yes, so I was wondering how much of a problem it may cause. Especially when travelling
beautiful tank
The Japanese main battletanks are very interesting. A study in building modern armor, to suit some very specific regional needs. Its terrain and the need to cross a lot of bridges
