Imagine if u threw a water balloon as hard as u can at the ground 5m in front of u the water pattern would be long and skinny because the energy is focused forward, great for AP not for HE, now if u lobbed the balloon at the same area it would be a more even spread because of the lower velocity, great for HE less so for AP. 2. Yes a panthers where made in greater amounts in 44 that panzer 4s but you do realize that the panther was designed to replace the panzer 4 and the need for armour haf greatly increased since early 40s so fucking obviously they would be made in greater amounts. 3. Yes the cost of of a panther is only 10% greater than a panzer 4. Why? Because u are comparing the cost for the engine and the hull/turret. that cost does not include any types of arrangement communication systems, or optics which are greater in panther. Even if it was just 10% greater that difference compounds greatly the more numbers of the vehicle u produce. You also seem to think that the purchase prize is the only cost of the vehicle. Maintance and repair costs where much higher in the more advanced panther. Plus the panther burned 65% more fuel than the panzer 4 to reach both their max range of 200 km
And thus, the KPz 70 and MBT 70 twins were separated as each parents took custody. They grew up, MBT 70 gave birth to Abrams, KPz 70 gave birth to the Leopard 2. Both Abrams and Leopard maintained good relations with each other. Sometimes they play their favorite game with each other: war game. Both tanks lived happily ever after. The end.
Ft. Knox, KY in the 1980's was "peppered" with old tanks, throughout the installation in areas not accessible to the general public. They proved useful objects for new recruits to paint. Driving to my BOQ for the fist time I had to stop at one particular vehicle. Yup, "bigger than Stuttgart " there was an MBT 70, 152mm launcher / gun.. I remembered the silhouette from and Aroura model kit I built as a kid. I was really impressed with the design, how it resembled the M1 just starting to enter operational service. Well with a tank it's like with a girl, you like a little controversy in her background . I haven't found another MBT70 since. Latter found my true love in Fulda.
The saddest bit about it, is that it was such a promising and capable vehicle.. yet fell victim of it's own doubts and second thoughts, and price, as you said Matsimus
Fort Knox had an MBT-70 on display across the street from my barracks. I used to love looking at that thing and wishing the big brass would have built the things.
- 152mm gun/launcher - 20mm remote operated AC - gas turbine engine - non homogenous armor - entire crew of 3 in turret - autoloader This tank was too much ahead of its time.
i remember fighting them in the old days of MGSPW, one variant gots the 120mm smoothbore with the top mounted 20mm and another one with the 152mm gun/launcher but with the missiles equipped on the sides of the tank.

The mist informative video I've ever seen on the MBT-70. It was an incredibly impressive machine, but the Abrams and Leopard 2 offspring were better tanks for modern, and for today's perspective, post-modern needs. I've seen an old video of the T54 and T69 (the oscillating turret designs) and the MBT-70 on display. In the video, the old tankers looks inside with his camera and the state of the inside is lamentable. It is really sad and they should have been maintained and preserved or given to an Armour museum.
I like the air ride suspension on it. The first low riding tank. I put air shocks on my tracked vehicle. I rode it on one test drive and felt like I was floating. Awesome setup.
Disaster Disagreement Tank? I'm gonna be honest, that's a rather tame name and I can see some merit in it, being that this was made in the Cold War and all.
Things we all want on our dream tank but we can't have all: -suspension -powerful smoothbore gun -air conditioning -thermal imagers (infrared if you have to) -automatic lead -composite armor -ERA and mounts -Commander or Loader's weapon (e.g. KORD, M2hB, M240c). (or both if you're into that sort of thing) -Autoloader (reccommended from me but only optional) -blast doors HEP (or whatever other smart HE shells you have) HEATFS, and APFSDS. -3-4 crew members (3 if you use the autoloader) -Active Protection System (otional but recommended from me) -Radio -Smoke Discharge launchers/emitters -Try for under 60 tons -NBC protection --Anti-Tank-Guided-Missiles (reccomended by me but optional) -Gyroscopic mounts -Gas turbine or diesel engine
It was such a beautiful tank, but that seemed to be one of the only things going for it. Still love the Kampfpanzer 70. love the vids Matsimus, can’t wait for some more like this. Maybe we could get one on the Panzer IV?
Hey Mat, I love your videos, I clicked on this video mostly because I have this vehicle(KPZ-70)in the game War Thunder, this things amazing and a beautiful tank, gotta love the 20mm cannon on top.
Locally, in Danbury Conn, US, One of last of the 5 prototypes remaining was recently scrapped with the closure of the Military Museum of Southern New England .
Saw one at the German Armour Corp Museum in Munster. Fine looking tank. We put German track on our m113’s, there for lots of 19mm (equal to 3/4”) nuts & bolts.
This is my first time that I ever see a video of yours and wow I love it. One thing that I want to mention, I think in my opinion that you could use the war thunder tanks even if you do not have it research and it has X-ray so you can show the crew inside. The models there looks pretty awesome.
Saw a pretty damn nice model of a KPz-70, where the missile gun had been replaced with a 120mm L/55 gun, the 20mm had been ditched entirely and the armor had been improved around the vehicle much in the same way as with the Leopard. The turret armor was extended all the way to the gun mantle. Also seen a computer model of an MBT-70 modernization that basically looks like a Super Abrams.
I’m an American and I wish we used the metric system! It’s so F’g stupid that we use imperial...🤬 Awesome video Mat, I learned a lot on this one...I was unaware of this tank prior to watching.
Nice video about powerful tank which is rarely known about ...1963-1965 🇩🇪🤝🇺🇸...labelling different opinions between two countries about design and primary purpose of making this tank at that time
I believe it allows the tank to have a lower profile and to have more or less gun depression. The Japanese as far as I know have this with most of their modern tanks
As an avid World of Tanks Blitz player I loved seeing that in game KPF footage lol. It is a german tank in that game and rocks the KpfPz moniker, but it is still a cool thing to run around in.
The M-48A5 and the M-60A3 with modern upgrades are still in service with some countries and are still excellent tanks . I was a 19D20 Cavalry Scout and was cross trained on these tanks in the 70's. Upgraded M-60's are as good as any steel haul tanks today.
Upgraded M-60s are still good as infantry support and can take on soviet era tanks with reasonable chances of survival, but I for sure would not want to face a modern mbt in one
Check out the upgrades on TH-cam. with all the new electronics and new 120mm gun and reactive armor I think it would have a better chance then the German Leopards that seem to have a survival issues in the Turkish Army.. It is better than any other steel haul tanks out there.
@@lisar3006 I have seen the upgraded m60 and it for sure looks capable, especially its offensive capabilities, but I still have severe doubts about its ability to survive impacts from modern APFSDS rounds. Regarding the Turkish Leopards, I believe the situation there is similar to the Iraqi and Saudi Arabian Abrams, tanks deployed in fire support roles and not protected by infantry
I always loved tanks. So much so I started an vehicle armor company, designing new technologies for defeating high caliber rounds and explosives. This tank came out when I was in high school. The tank was way too complicated. Adjustable suspension , was cool. Typical time frame was about twenty years, because as time goes by, new ideas, technologies, but the absolute dumbest idea was to put the driver in the turret. It made drivers sick
Its ironic that these two countries worked so hard to create an mbt together, scrapped it, then both built mbt's that where incredibly similar in every way
just a bit different: different gun: originally m1 used 105mm, Leopard 2 the 120mm L44 and then L55, different armor altogether, different engines (m1-> gas turbine, leopard 2-> diesel).
Sorry but you are wrong about the armor layout. The Radiation liner was on the inside of the turret not in the cavities. We know that the bustle was spaced armor with high hardness steel on the outside and RHA on the inside. The crew compartment was spaced armor with RHA plates outside and a cast steel-shell inside. There likely have been some filler element in the cavities as we can see on the later XM803, they filled the part in front of the gunner's sight with cast steel, likely as a cost-saving measure. The protection level was 105mm APDS at 800 meters.
Mat, In the description please include the name of videogames you use in footage also any other source video footage. There should be a book made of military weapon systems acquisition missteps and this should have a paragraph if not a chapter...along with TFX.
I think my dad has that tank that he made. But he usually makes model airplanes but I think he made that tank with another tank from World War II called The Tiger tank I believe.
OK... If there are “visual differences” between the KPz-70 and MBT-70... WHY did you not do a side-by-side comparison of the two to show us what those were?

"Mom, dad, please stop fighting" - MBT/Kampfpanzer 70
@peace warrior Well, the Fatherland is quite obvious here
And thus, the KPz 70 and MBT 70 twins were separated as each parents took custody.
There used to be one at Ft. Knox, but that was 40 years ago.
The best things that came out of the MBT-70/Kampfpanzer 70 program: the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2.
I build at least 50 tank models as a kid and I never knew about this tank! Thanks.
Fort Knox had an MBT-70 on display across the street from my barracks. I used to love looking at that thing and wishing the big brass would have built the things.
Great video as always! Thanks for the upload Matsimus!👍
- 152mm gun/launcher
- 20mm remote operated AC
- gas turbine engine
- non homogenous armor
- entire crew of 3 in turret
- autoloader
This tank was too much ahead of its time.
KPz 70 used a diesel, only MBT 70 did use a turbine
i remember fighting them in the old days of MGSPW, one variant gots the 120mm smoothbore with the top mounted 20mm and another one with the 152mm gun/launcher but with the missiles equipped on the sides of the tank.

I don’t know if it is still there, but in 1992 there was an MBT 70 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.
I remember seeing models of this in hobby stores in the late '70s--early '80s. As early-mid teenage boys, we thought it was very cool.
The old 1/48 scale Aurora kit. Not very accurate, but it caught the sexy shape. I had it as a kid in the late 1960s.
"Sat on by a Maus Tank" 😂😂😂 I love it!
there was one of the prototypes of this at the military museum of southern CT, but they scrapped it. what a shame.
Ive seen the real MBT-70 at Fort Benning. its quite the beast.
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast. I love the concept and design of this tank
Things we all want on our dream tank but we can't have all:
-suspension
-powerful smoothbore gun
-air conditioning
-thermal imagers (infrared if you have to)
-automatic lead
-composite armor
-ERA and mounts
-Commander or Loader's weapon (e.g. KORD, M2hB, M240c). (or both if you're into that sort of thing)
-Autoloader (reccommended from me but only optional)
-blast doors
HEP (or whatever other smart HE shells you have) HEATFS, and APFSDS.
-3-4 crew members (3 if you use the autoloader)
-Active Protection System (otional but recommended from me)
-Radio
-Smoke Discharge launchers/emitters
-Try for under 60 tons
-NBC protection
--Anti-Tank-Guided-Missiles (reccomended by me but optional)
-Gyroscopic mounts
-Gas turbine or diesel engine

It was such a beautiful tank, but that seemed to be one of the only things going for it. Still love the Kampfpanzer 70. love the vids Matsimus, can’t wait for some more like this. Maybe we could get one on the Panzer IV?
A mate and I stumbled across an alternative hull for the MBT70 on Sennelage training area a few years back.
Hey Mat, I love your videos, I clicked on this video mostly because I have this vehicle(KPZ-70)in the game War Thunder, this things amazing and a beautiful tank, gotta love the 20mm cannon on top.

@Bradyn Urfer oh you want the T-29.

Locally, in Danbury Conn, US, One of last of the 5 prototypes remaining was recently scrapped with the closure of the Military Museum of Southern New England .
Just wondering how comes you have the rlc 29th reg logo as your profile?
There used to be a prototype MBT 70 in a tank museum in Danbury, CT. I'm not sure if it's still open. It definitely is a interesting tank to look at.
wyatt1358 they scrapped it last year
Now that sucks.
Thanks! It was enlightening to hear about the German side of the effort.
What game are you playing in this part (6:39-9:29) of the video? It looks almost like World of Tanks before the HD updates.
M60A2 looks terrible with the 152mm. It was a big waste of money.
The Chode Mobile
Another lesson in the pitfalls of joint development projects. They sometimes cost more than going it alone.
One of the 2 remaining prototypes is on display in my home town. I think it is the one shown in the pictures in the video.

Hi Matt,
Which on-line store did you buy your 1/16 Scale tank? I am keen to buy a Leopard II in UN white, because I think it looks cool.
enjoy your content.. what is the game you were playing to illustrate this tank?.. thanks
I'd love to see interior pics.
I’m an American and I wish we used the metric system! It’s so F’g stupid that we use imperial...🤬 Awesome video Mat, I learned a lot on this one...I was unaware of this tank prior to watching.
Nice video about powerful tank which is rarely known about ...1963-1965 🇩🇪🤝🇺🇸...labelling different opinions between two countries about design and primary purpose of making this tank at that time
What is the advantage of kneeling hydropneumatic suspension? thank you.
I believe it allows the tank to have a lower profile and to have more or less gun depression. The Japanese as far as I know have this with most of their modern tanks
@@francistercero7396 tanks
As an avid World of Tanks Blitz player I loved seeing that in game KPF footage lol. It is a german tank in that game and rocks the KpfPz moniker, but it is still a cool thing to run around in.
What is the game you were playing in the background?
Ok, was it just me, or during the game play video section, there was two tanks having a main gun sword fight in the distance??
Too good for this world
Or something like that
😂😂
Enjoyed a lot Matt
What’s the 3D model viewer he’s using?
The way how the driving controls on that tank work is the only question I have 😎👍
I always loved tanks.
Rarely you see such a failure that was at the same time one of the most important and influential designs ever.
You want to see one? You really should because it is a beautiful tank and up in person it is even more beautiful!
Two of their MBT programs. Don't forget the Starship ;)
I think my dad has that tank that he made. But he usually makes model airplanes but I think he made that tank with another tank from World War II called The Tiger tank I believe.
Yo, what graphic setting did you use on blitz?
Metric is the way? Thems is fightin' words!!!

Hi Matsimus, I really like your videos. I have suggestion for you. I think people will appreciate if you make videos about ATGM & MANPADS. Because its more affordable than tanks & fighter aircrafts. Keep making good military videos, bro ! :)
The United States did field the 152 mm gun/missile launcher in the M60-A2 .... A real tank versus a non-tank "armored reconnaissance vehicle" M551 Sheridan
metric has imperial equivalents
i know, family mechanics have on occasion used wrenches of one on the other.
just figure out what is the match then figure out what parts to hook together.
metric has its bonuses
i'm just way too lazy to learn a unit of measure when i don't get along with numbers.
Can you do something about Romanian TR 85 or TR 125, please?

I have just been "gifted" this tank in WoT and I had never seen one before, I had to Google it 😅, it is beautiful though. I'm rubbish at WoT though but it's fun. I like the fact it's still a real-world tank, however never went into production. It's got some punch 👊
How driver station will rotate inside turret
man how the driver can drive the tank when the turret look left and right ? 😂
He was in another turret, on the turret. His could rotate independently of the gun and thus face forwards (or backwards for reverse) at all times. Also he was of centered, so you can clearly see why the drivers got confused
@@juanordonezgalban2278 I think he meant all the sights/mountings in the way of the driver's periscope
