- 👉 Learn how to write the equation of a parabola given three points. The equation of a parabola is of the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b and c are constants. Since, the equation of a parabola has 3 constants, three equations and hence three points are needed to solve/obtain the equation of a parabola.
Given three points on a parabola, we use the standard form of a quadratic equation to set up a system of three linear equations which we solve to obtain: a, b, and c and hence, the equation of the parabola.

You're so great, Brian. Thankyou all the way from Australia :)
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! I was crying because my teacher gave us homework with this but didn't explain how to do it. You are a lifesaver!
You have saved me during these times of Covid-19. We just recently got a new teacher who does not know what he is doing. He likes to mumble a bunch and since I am online, I along with many others cannot understand what he is doing. Thank you so much for this video, I don't know what I could do without this channel being here! :D
I'm a slow learner, so after a new lesson, I do a lot of self-studying. He's so helpful!
As someone who makes B's or better and has taken many math classes, I've struggled with math but found a way to understand it better. I took business Calculus and made an A. How I did that, youtube videos. I don’t know you, but your videos have helped me so much that I'm passing trigonometry because of you. You explain focus, vertex, and more so much easier.
2012. And your video is still helping people in 2022. And for many years to come. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and posting it. ✌🏽❤️🙂💪🏽🙏🏽
b is your coefficient of your linear term
thank you so much! i was really confused on how to do this and i realized i was making a silly mistake after doing this. this video was very clear and easy to understand!!!
as someone who is cramming for a quiz after falling asleep in class, thank you for helping me understand this
Clicked with me as soon as you said point-slope! Thanks boss
*Yes the videos from 2006 are helping me*

every single one of your intros looks like an intro to a supervillain. you're the best
Thank you sooooo much!!! I'm an eighth grade student taking high school algebra and i didn't understand how to do this. Without this I might of not passed the class. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!
you are very welcome! happy to be able to assist you
Thank you sir.Very useful tutorial.

You're so good 😊, thank you so much
Thank you so much for making this video! I was able to finally understand how to find the slope using the vertex and a point and I solved my math problem!
To master skills and be able to explain it in simple terms that will help people like me even 10 years later is something that can only be done by: THE TOP 1%
bless your soul, I have a midterm exam, and we never reviewed this in class or in the guide work so thank you so much

BLESS YOU BRO YOU ARE THE GOAT SIR!!!
Thank you so much for this it prepared me for my quiz today :)
awesome! best of luck!
A true hero teaches math like ABC
Can you please use the standard form of a parabola which is (y-k)^2 = 4p(x-h)^2 (for horizontal parabola) or swap x and y for vertical parabola? PLEASE USE STANDARD FORM
Thank you for your video, Sir
you are very welcome!
do you always need to put +1 after 3=4a-1 or not. Thank u
Thank you this really helped me
you are very welcome!
thx
thank you so much!!!
you are very welcome!!!
no I teach high school in Jacksonville Florida
ayeeee Jacksonville
what if the x intercepts was not in the whole number ser?? how to solve it can you please teach me??
This guy is the goat 🐐
Claps for you 👏👏👏
big help thanks! my teacher is no where near this good
happy to be able to help you out!
I have a question, is the second point, (x, y), the same thing as the focus of the parabola?
Great video, I didn't understand it until I saw this, we use y at my school, not fx
Wes T y and f(x) can be interchangeable but will depend on if you are working with equations or functions which yes can depend on the school
Math is timeless
Helpfull
lmao I got a take home exam and you did it all for me in 2012
What if I want to rewrite in standard form?
How do you find its directrix?
what should we do if the a=0?
can someone explain to me why he adds a one to the 3 and the negative one
imma start a cult having you as supreme leader math
god bless you sir
Sir the lower case f is confusing me.whats it for ?
YOU SAVE MY LIFE THANK YOU
you are very welcome!
What did he say??
In which grade you study conic sections in USA??
typically pre-calculus
Brian McLogan i mean which grade.... school ... High school...or college
depends, someone will never take this class cuz they don't want to, always sophmore year or junior year.
Thanks for the video. I am trying to learn more math. I am a semi-retired music teacher from NY.
you are very welcome! Curious, what brings you back to learning more math?
I have always had an appreciation for math, but I only took the required courses when I was in school. I majored in psych., in college, but ended up in the music teaching field.( I come from a family of people in the arts.) I taught, primarily, the string instruments in my thirty something years in the schools. When I retired from the schools (I am continuing to work with private students) I decided I would try to learn calculus. I quickly realized that my basic math skills were so poor that I would have to learn/relearn the math that leads up to it to get anywhere at all. I have had a little help from a physicist, whose daughter I taught for several years, but it has mainly been a haphazard process on my part. I have made some headway in my understanding. It has been good for my teaching to move to the other side of the "equation," and have the "I don't get this at all" experience. One can forget that experience if too much time is spent in familiar territory. I also think it is good to push the mind in directions it doesn't usually go, especially as one gets older. Thanks for asking!
cheers I very much agree with you. Many people blame mathematics because much of what we teach is not applicable to real life, which yes I agree and understand. On the other side of the coin we have done a poor job for many years not allowing students to be intrigued with mathematics and explore its beauty for the sake of learning. (focus on processes, tests and tricks) I hope as you continue this journey to notice the connections and simplicity of mathematics that will help you strive to continue to want to learn more. That is what the study of mathematics has brought to me and I am so thankful I was able to experience it. It really is the language of our universe. Kudos to you.
Thanks for your wonderful reply. The connections in mathematics intrigue me. When I grasp something of that nature it is fascinating! Sometimes I see the hint of a connection somewhere but can't quite put it all together. I think it has improved my thinking in general, and it has lead to improvements in my teaching and understanding of music. All the best!
absolutely! I think you might enjoy this ted talk if you have not already seen it th-cam.com/video/ZQElzjCsl9o/w-d-xo.html. Btw I played the trombone for 8 years and owe so much of my development and learning to music.
Nice video ..can u explain what is an involute curve...
You good sir are an angle
obtuse or acute?
Clutch af
Would you try this for me...Given that the line Lx+my+c touches the parabola Y²=4ax and show that ln=am...please thank you
Hmm it can also be a y^2 right?
SAVED MY FUTURE AND SHIT NO CAP
is it the same if in the problem it says that it has a "vertical directrix" or do i change it to x = a(y-k)^2 + k ????
that would be the equation if the directrix is vertical
Brian McLogan Thank you so much. My old teacher was talking about using the formula from conic sections, the one where the vertex is not on the origin and opens horizontally. Any ideas why?
keep on slaying!
How can i find equation of graph from given point of vertex and extreme values😮😮😮
Where’s the (-1,3) came from?
what if i only have 1 zero and the vertex, i don’t have both a y & x point
W manz fr
Sir is there a different way of finding the equation, given a point and vertex of a parabola?
not that I am initially aware of, what is wrong with this method?
Sir,there is nothing wrong with this method, but i did it with another method and i got the answer in standard form.
deadass my teacher confused the shit out of me, how is this so simple my fucking god
dang both your videos i found on this use only standard form but i have to find a b and c. idk what is going on
What if zeros and point was given?
need to use standard form and system of equations
how is this precalculus???
It is a review of quadratics taught in Algebra 2 but also taught in Pre-Calc at the beginning of the year
ah I see thank you
you are the cool
Hey am lado from south Sudan in I have problem in parabola can you help me
sorry I am only able to spend enough time over what I am currently teaching, if you have a brief question I may be able to help
i love you
