How do you convert from standard form to vertex form of a quadratic

- 👉 Learn how to graph quadratic equations by completing the square. A quadratic equation is an equation of the form y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b and c are constants. The graph of a quadratic equation is in the shape of a parabola which can either face up or down (if x is squared in the equation) or face left or right (if y is squared).
To graph a quadratic equation, we need to know some essential parts of the graph including the vertex. The vertex of a parabola is the turning point of the parabola. It is the point on the parabola at which the curve changes from increasing to decreasing or vice-versa.
Given a quadratic equation in standard form, we obtain the vertex of the equation by using the process of completing the square to rewrite the equation in the vertex form and hence extract the vertex of the parabola formed by the equation. Knowing the vertex of the graph and the parent graph, we can then apply the required transformation to obtain the required graph.

Y'know, Something I always needed from math teachers was to explain WHY.
The what only gets you so far,
The how lets you know what got you where,
But the WHY Is literally so important and I feel some teachers really over-look it.
But here, I understand things very well because its explained fully in a good way

One of the reasons that Brian is such an excellent teacher, is that he doesn't do all the steps to one problem. He repeats the steps on multiple problems as he goes (for repetition) students learn much better this way in my experience! Kudos Brian!
I wish that teachers were all like you man. Imagine the amount of content and time students would have to apply their knowledge of a concept, all while not being overwhelmed by homework as we often are. You a brilliant teacher man, thanks for all you do for the math community.
My method I was taught:
Have standard form
find vertex
Put in vertex form
you can do it that way, what about when there is an "a" though?

@@brianmclogan i saw a video with a similar method but i dont like that way because you are supposed to use a calculator to find the vertex and you dont gain any understanding of how you got the answer, or how to do it yourself. but maybe you guys did it differently cause the video i saw used a calculator. id much prefer this method though.

But seriously I spent actual DAYS trying to understand this through the notes my teacher had us write, and still got a 65 on the quiz. He explained it in 8 minutes and I got a 100 on the retake. I'm dropping out this man is all I need to survive.

Yes , we complete the square to find the number on the far right corner , which is "k".
So in the first example , we got +4 by completing the square . ( we used the formula (b÷2)squared )
I was literally stumped. I didn't understand it at ALL in class I just kept asking myself "HOW DID the teacher get that number???!!" And here you explained it all so amazingly well and I am forever grateful. Thank you so much!!! 😄

people complain about their teachers a lot but mine... omg. He gave me an F on an assignment because I didn't show work on one problem even though I got them all right. He's also rude to students who he finds annoying, he stands in front of the board so we can't see, and he doesn't explain things. He just does math problems and expects us to understand what he's doing.
I've learned more from these videos than from the guy whose job it is to teach me. Thank you.
