You can snowboard right next door at Snowbird in same canyon, same snow. You can snowboard everywhere else....all over the US. US has 470 ski areas and 2 are ski only. Geez....So give me a break. The boarders are just being ridiculous.

    Im a Skier and I find the whole Skier vs snowboarding thing so immature. We both love the freedom that the mountain has to offer the only difference is in how we ride. People have a bad experience with someone from the opposite sport and feel the need to categorise all skiers/boarders as being the same. Both groups have their fair share of idiots no matter were you go but people just need to be able to look past this otherwise it's gonna impact the community.

    Alright so I've read through quite a few comments down below and I'm gonna say this to make sure everyone understands. For context I am a level 3 certified ski instructor as well as level 3 freestyle and level 2 board instructor. I've been skiing literally my entire life and work at Snowbird, which is a mountain right next to Alta that you can actually ski to and from.
    The reason why Alta does not allow boarders is because people in Utah take snow very seriously, we love our powder. Not all, but a LARGE majority of boarders shovel good snow down to the bottom of a run (also known as snowplowing) for it to pile up and that makes the top of runs, which are also considered the best, to be icy and unfavorable. Bird has quite a few boarders and if it's not actively snowing that day the top of bird will almost always be icy and I will just ski over to Alta where there will be powder. Most novice skiers and boarders snow plow because they slide their way to the bottom, but most skiers in that area are already capable of handling themselves in a turn and know how to carve through the snow and create a small footprint, but most boarders will slide down on their heels and push the snow off. I know for a fact it is different in other regions because I used to also work at Big Bear in California when I was in high school and the skiers there are garbage and are the ones doing the snowplowing, but at Bird/Alta the vast majority of snowplows are boarders.
    That being said I do not agree with snowboarders not being allowed on Alta because after all it is a massive mountain and plenty of room for everyone to share.
    For those that read this, if you have any questions or want to argue my points go ahead I'll be sure to reply to you.

    It's on public land. I think that says all that needs to be said. Plus, the whole skier vs. snowboarder thing should be in the past. It came about because early snowboards & snowboarders were much, much slower than skiers and tended the clog the slopes and get in the way. I was there, and as an aggressive high-speed skier, there is no denying it was a serious problem. There was also a good decade or two where, for some reason, boarder culture dictated that it was OK to "sit in the middle of the hill in a line or a group". This was dangerous, annoying, and against the rules. Luckily for everyone involved this has pretty much all changed. Boarding equipment is much better, boarders are better, and it's now common to see boarders carving beautiful lines down the slopes and keeping up with skiers on equal footing in terms of speed, and it's incredibly rare to see a group of boarders purposefully blocking a run (why, oh why was that every a thing? Boarders doing this caused year after year of outrage among skiers and helped propagate the ill-will skiers long held towards boarders. If you want your sport to become universally respected as legitimate, the way to do that is NOT to go out of your way to cause problems...) I suppose some people can't get over anything, and refuse to move forward, but really, just get over it!

    • @jordanharris1323
      @jordanharris1323 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, skis are much more expensive compared to snowboards. A good set of skis will set you back 500+ dollars plus bindings and boots. You're looking at about nearly 1000+ plus dollars once you factor in bindings, etc. With snowboards, you can find boards that are amazing for less than 500 and get bindings n boots from Burton for a pretty low price. I specced a burton board out and i could have a snowboard ready for the slopes for around ~700

    • @ericdev2511
      @ericdev2511 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, they're really not. I bought a brand new pair of skis this season with bindings for $650 (Rossignol Sky 7 HD, hardly an entry level ski). It all depends on what you want out of a pair of skis or a board, and how willing you are to hunt for a deal. There are entry level skis with bindings for under $400, and expert level boards from Burton for $2,000, and vise versa. Neither sport is cheap, nor is one really cheaper than the other.

Alta also has a ton of wack terrain - ups and downs, traverses and flats poorly suited to boards. Five a-holes sitting on boards stranded in the middle of a frozen lake runout track ruins the the whole thing. No body wants that mountain scraped to shine and punk kids sitting in piles instead of getting some vert. That's why.

If the boarders want to use the mountain... they can feel free to trek up on foot.

      No. Sliding down a mountain on a particular piece of metal/plastic component is incomparable to whether gay marriage is a choice. With respect to this case, I don't like it but it is a legal business model; the exclusivity makes it more attractive for skiers, it makes it distinguishable from other ski resorts. Any individual is allowed but they have to ski instead of snowboard; its not attacking the individual, its literally preventing a particular form of sliding down a mountain regarded as dangerous by many (not by me as a matter of fact).

    This is potentially one of the worst legal arguments I've heard. Just because land is publicly owned, does not mean it is required to let people do whatever they want. Find a single ski resort that allows free range snowmobiling, or tubing down runs. They don't exist. The equal protection clause protects people based on innate aspects of their being. If you can choose between skiing and snowboarding then it is not protected. Also... fine they can be on the land. But Alta owns the lifts and the lodges. Have fun walking up the hill.

    What a silly lawsuit. Hard to imagine the leisure/activity chooses to play is the same thing as race, gender etc..... Should there be a constitutional mandate for any bar that has a dartboard to also be required by law to offer a pool table?

    It is against the law and I hope they win!!! I as a native Utahn, and have always been salty against Alta for running on public land, but deciding who and who can't use that public land. Mad River Glen and Deer valley (also Utah) is completely in their rights since they own 100% of their land they are excluding others from, I OWN ALTA!!! I'm a Utah tax payer, that land is MINE whether it's summer or winter, I want to be able to access it! This needs to end, and QUICK!!!

    I would like to know how they are more dangerous in any manor. As someone who regularly has over 100+ days on the hill a year I see more skier taking more risk and also not looking up the trail for the people who technically have the right away and are traveling at a faster rate of speed.

  • @UtahManSirZS
    @UtahManSirZS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's about off piste snow conditions. If you have ever skied a traverse in a skiers only resort and a similar traverse in a regular resort you would know the difference it makes. Alta has only 5 lifts and 2,200 skiable acres making it necessary to traverse the mountain to get to all areas. The neighbor of Alta, Snowbird, has a similar size of 2,500 skiable acres but they have 10 lifts and a Tram making much more of the mountain accessible from the top of the lift.

Why not make new jobs and hire people to drive snowmobiles and take the snowboarders up to the top of the mountain? I guess Alta didn't watch Johnny Tsunami.

  • @HawxHunter
    @HawxHunter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In my experience, snowboarding is safer and you are less likely to hurt yourself. Your feet are bound to the board, and legs stay at a regular stance so if you fall, you are much less likely to twist your leg/knee/ankle and break anything. Whereas with skis, your legs are free to move, so one bad fall and you could end up turning your ankle 180 degrees, if the skis fail to break off from your boots.

  • @PCD8421

      That's pretty much what I was thinking. Not to mention there is TONS of world class snow to be had in the greater SLC area. It is an interesting point because unlike Deer Valley, Alta leases public land, but like the guy in the video said it doesn't really hold water with the equal protection clause.

    • @aahsimovieprojects
      @aahsimovieprojects 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, snowboarders can have Snowbird if we can keep Alta. I have no reason to ski Snowbird when I can just go to Alta. I've skied both and have a strong preference for Alta.

    Yea, I feel snowboarders should be allowed to ride on any resort skiers are allowed to, but discrimination? No, I agree with Aaron Caplan, they're not banning people, they're banning equipment. If this lawsuit fell through, then you could argue that cars should be allowed on bike trails, and monster trucks on skateboard parks. They'd have a better case arguing that men should be allowed in the women's rest rooms.
