Is it worth going to Barog? It's an interesting question.
Barog is a small town in Solan district in the State of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is on the Kalka - Shimla route. It rises over 6000 feet above sea level and offers a very captivating panoramic view of the surroundings from the top of the hill. The Barog Railway Station and nearby Barog Tunnel, located at a height of 5000 feet has an interesting story behind its construction which has given it the dubious tag of being one of the most haunted tunnels in the country.
Barog Tunnel, also known as Tunnel No. 33, was so named after Col. Barog, a railway engineer in the 19th century, who was given the responsibility of constructing this longest tunnel (present length 3750 feet) on Kalka-Shimla railway route. Since this was a very long tunnel, and time given for completion was short, Barog ordered digging work to start from both ends simultaneously hoping that in between the two ends will meet at a common point. But apparently his alignment calculations went wrong and the two parts didn't meet. Col Barog, the story says was censored and fined one rupee. Humiliated by this mistake Barog walked upto the mouth of the flawed tunnel with his dog and shot himself. The local belief is that Col. Barog still haunts the place and in particular Tunnel no. 33.
Reaching near this tunnel was very challenging for us. The road gradient was rather steep and slippery. Wherever gradient was modest, the path was rather narrow and at the end there were more than hundred steps of a staircase.
Incidentally, Barog Tunnel is the longest of 103 operational tunnels on Kalka- Shimla rail route which itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Though quite challenging in terms of physical endurance, the very interesting, though tragic history of the place and the fact it's a part UNESCO World Heritage made our trip extremely rewarding an experience.
