Mallard flank works just as well, and a change of dubbing colour offers many subtle alternatives. I think this will become a classic, like the excellent Sawyer Pheasant Tail. I tied up a couple of rows in no time, down to a Tiemco 19, and they look great. After hours of testing one'self with degree level confections, a few of these beginner flies calms the soul like two fingers of Glenlivet.

Nice one Barry! I like minimal materials patterns and efficient use of them - no waste on that flank feather! When wrapping a multi-fiber body (like herl, pheasant tail or as in this case, woodduck flank) I leave the thread at the tie-in point and use the body fibers to push the thread forward as I wrap - find that the thread helps keep the fibers together. Cheers!

Oh Barry.. that was a nice one.. I have been so busy with the summer remodel I have not had time to sit.. it is cool and wet this morning so I got to come and sit in front of this infernal machine for a bit.. I had forgotten how relaxing it is to watch your videos.. I miss it.. But winter will be here soon enough and my love/hate relationship with the infernal machine will begin again.. I hope all is going well with you over there..my little nephew is coming for a few days tonight and hope to get some fishing in and other exciting 13 year old stuff..
