A lot of people seem to be critical of their tempo in the second movement but I want to offer a counterargument. Shostakovich marked the second movement "Allegro molto" which roughly corresponds to 130-155 bpm according to my research. If you pull out a metronome it seems that these guys are taking it at around 140-145 bpm which is not even the top end of that range. Sure this is one of the fastest interpretations of the second mvmt I've heard but there's a good chance this is what Shosty envisioned. It sounds tormented and aggressive which is definitely the point. And since they clearly have the chops to take it that fast, why the hell not?
Agreed.
Those BPM ranges are just rough guidelines, it all depends on the context of the piece. Those guys wanted to play it at this tempo because that's how they feel the piece and that's ok; good thing about art is that it can be interpreted in various ways. I do prefer it played slower, but I'm not going to criticize those guys for playing it faster than what I would've liked. As you said, they have the skills to play it as fast without compromising clarity of the piece, so why not
i think it's completely irrelevant what Shostakovich himself envisioned. In my opinion, it's up to the player to interpret the piece and make it their own. We are on similar sides of the argument, but for different reasons.
Defenitley agree. If you want to listen to an even faster interpretation though, listen to Kronos Quartet play this. It's absolutely insane.
I think you're basically right and that this performance works beautifully. These guys really seem to get this music. You might find it interesting to read the book "Shotakovich; A Life Remembered" for a whole lot of fascinating information & stories (from people who knew him) about this raving genius and the horrible times he & his compatriots lived through under the wildly oppressive Soviet regime. There are several stories that involve his tempos, which, as marked in his scores with metronome markings, were pretty much universally thought to be too fast. He would say to performers that his metronome did not work properly and that they could play it at a slower speed. There are a couple of incidents in the book where he performed (he was a superb pianist) his work and then after the concert criticised his own playing, saying it was much too fast. I think tempos are guides and should be respected, within limits. If it works it works. In this performance it really works.
Who needs electric guitars when you have a shostakovitch
5:55 agreed, I'd say they are having a headbangers ball around this point
Especially Symphony #4, metal before metal!
Both things are great and needed, dont be elitist
@@AndreyRubtsovRU I'm not saying that electric guitars are bad, it's just a comment about the music that I thought was funny.

Crazy to think that just four people can make all that sound. Amazing.
An admittedly nerdy observation: Just after 20:19, the second violinist plays C instead of B flat, moving in parallel with the first violin's final statement of the DSCH motif (the notes D, E flat, C, B, derived from the German spelling of the composer's initials), instead of descending chromatically (and mournfully) with the (typically mournful) viola's chromatic descent. As a violist who has performed this quartet, I've always relished this moment of empathy with the second violin and was stunned when I heard it altered. Perhaps this was just a "slip of the finger"; in a video of a performance they gave later that year, the second violinist plays the expected B flat (at 20 : 22). Either way, their performances of this work are absolutely the most impressive I have ever heard. Bravo!!
I was sweating BULLETS listening to the second movement. That was intense, in an extraordinary way. Their performance is also one of the most aggressive ones I've seen. Absolutely love their interpretation of this piece!
Im not even playing an instrument and I still can’t keep up😂😂
I absolutely LOVE that tempo for the second movement. Release those emotions! I can't imagine just how pent up Shostakovich must have felt all those years on the edge of a razor blade with Stalin and the communist party.
However, they need to have the melody of the third movement much quieter. It works as an astounding contrast to the second movement if that first melody in the third is super quiet.
I like how they’re all headbanging to the 2nd movement while they’re playing lol
How can one not headbang to *THAT*
Unreal…. That's how this piece is REALLY supposed to be played. Absolutely harrowing....
@@mariiie.B I would disagree here on a point of principle: I believe it (and western art music in general) are supposed to be played how the performers believe they are supposed to be played! I like how this one is performed personally: it wouldn't be the only performance of this piece I would ever listen to for the rest of my life (and I'd rather never have to choose only one single recording of any piece) but equally it is much better than it would have been if the performers had gone with preconcieved notions of how it is meant to be played rather than following their own instincts on it as they did here :)
@@DavidTruby I agree with you there, the music is there for performers to act upon it instinctually - composers (and performers alike) are the mere catalysts for what the meaning and extraction of emotion can be out of what has been created…that's all music, not just western classical for me
@@DavidTruby Absolutely. Well put.

bruh i felt like a fly being smacked onto the wall with a flip flop at 5:00 and i LOVED it
5:00 for myself because this is what I live for now
This is the best rendition I’ve ever heard of Shosty’s 8th. bravo!
the fastest 2nd movement i've ever heard. the acoustics make for a great sound on the slower movements especially.
the tempo is absolutely amazing beautiful
also the violist's projection is impressive, esp at the end of the the second movement
I think this is one of the best performances - of any string quartet - I've ever heard. Bravi !!!
IF you're interested in Shostakovich (and especially if you have rigid ideas about tempi) you might want to read a very interesting book "Shotakovich; A Life Remembered" which presents many stories about the composer told by people who knew, lived, and worked with him. There are several parts that show that he was flexible about tempi - and that he played his own work very fast. He also made metronome markings in his scores that performers initially thought were impossibly fast. It's a fascinating book that would interest anyone who has a deep interest in music.
Мне 70 и я впервые плакал от музыки, скорбь, печаль и трагизм жизни и смерти
Спасибо за ваш коментарий, я послушал и не уловил "силы" этой композиции. Буду стараться
Fantastic playing! I have worked with Dimitri Kitajenko who was living and working with Schostakovitch. He told me that maestro always you can do what you want but never touch my tempos .this was played so perfectly that I think he would appreciate this tempos .even knocking on the door was little bit fast like whole performance but I have to say that it’s fascinating.bravo
The most thrilling version of the second movement I have ever heard. Wonderful!
Serious guys playing serious music. Fantastic. Disagree about the fast parts being too fast, it's supposed to be manic. Also disagree about the acoustics. Those "knocks at the door" were thunderous; the NKVD would have broken in easily with those. OTOH, I'm listening with headphones, maybe that helps the acoustic. Thank you, Glafsfjordens, for posting this outstanding performance.
Thank you Mitch. It was unbelievable to be there live, hope to see you on site at some point in the future!
And it sounds like playing serious instruments too...!
Also, you must have THE most fantastic cellist I've seen! Impeccible technique.
So aggressive and riveting! Loved how incredibly fearless they are!
That was so incredibly powerful.
Couldn't be better, Dimitri would have loved this performance and so do I. Bravo Bravo Bravo
Oh! What a lovely name for a string quartet!
Love to see the passion in their movements, really makes the entire preformance
Terrific! i wish i had been at this concert
4:57 aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
It was astounding concert.
So great!
What passionate energy!!
My God! That was my first time experiencing a string quartet by Shostakovich! Incredible journey!
This was a new experience. Loved the excellent sound of this recording, which did justice to this highly original interpretation, or should I say discharge. Thank you for uploading this.
Wow, i didnt know the alto clef had a youtube channel; neat! (all jokes aside though i completley agree)
Simply INCREDIBLE!
Me with zero strings training:The second movement of this piece is how I judge ability on strings. This quartet’s performance of the entire piece is the most cohesive performance of this piece.
😂
@@M_SCat least I admit it
Bravo! Incredible performance 👏👏
Go VIOLA!!
i am here everyday for a month!!!! i am obsesssssss
This is simply wonderful
I literally got goosebumps all over in many parts. I don't normally listen to string quartets, I'm more of a whole orchestra with a soloist enthusiast. But this was one of the best pieces I have ever heard. Magnificent.
I loved this from start to finish. And I'll be listening to it many times over.
Fantastic.intonation dynamics....all strings match so well together. ....
"Я размышлял о том, что если я когда-нибудь помру, то вряд ли кто напишет произведение, посвященное моей памяти. Поэтому я сам решил написать таковое. Можно было бы на обложке так и написать: «Посвящается памяти автора этого квартета»"
Особый момент для ДДШ ,неожиданно посланного в Вост.Германию в '46г... Но играют 2 ч.чересчур быстро и нервно,будто бы "изображая" Автора, а его просто "поминать" надо!
That's wonderful
best interpretation i’ve ever heard
Excelentes músicos forman este cuarteto!!
The problem with the second movement is technical, not musical. There is an audio compressor in the signal path ( i think it is after the recording and before uploading, to meet youtube volume level guidelines). It is making the quieter sections sound robust and buoyant but then making the louder sections sound crushed and unclear. The rule of thumb for classical music is that we do not use any EQ or compressors. More youtube audio has been spoiled by audio engineers than all the musicians and conductors put together. All hail the mighty recording engineer.
Perhaps this is why I think the entire performance lacks dynamic variance. It all sounds loud to me, and there are many places where it should sound introspective. Even the page turns are loud.
Espectacular. Me encantó la velocidad del segundo movimiento.
Just WOW!!
all these musicians are masters in their instrument and know exactly how to breathe together in an ensemble and how to listen to each other properly. I have seen renditions of this with mediocre firsts violin, secoonds, violists and cellists but here every player was on point. Best performance I have heard! Absolutely incredible tempo for the second movement I was shocked but I absolutely loved it . I hear musicians fudging up that bit at a lot slower tempo it was incredibly impressive the skill level here. I swear your hearts must;ve been racing absolutely incredible! The body language and movement together as a string quartet was great. Also you rung out those tension-filled moments and you all knew the corners of the piece and exactly how the piece should move on I have a feeling they have rehearsed together for a long time. Amazing!! The sound ratios were impeccable throughout the piece. I never heard one instrument overpowering the rest of the ensemble and I always heard each sound being valued equally even if one had the melody it was a beautiful mix of sound. Another beautiful cello solo and
oops i forgot to finish but yes wonderful
Fantastic
Absolutely stunning!

I'm only listening to this to impress the girl I have a crush on, but wow this kinda slaps

Наилучшее исполнение!!!
Im going to norway for highschool, and if i ever get the chance i'd love to visit this festival someday! Im a massive fan of shostakovich and his works, and he is one of my biggest inspirations for my music. Ive spent countless hours practicing and analyzing his works, and these guys truly did this quartet justice, especially in the second movement! Id absoloutley love to see these guys live at this festival when i visit!
Much love from Iceland 🇮🇸❤️🇳🇴
Edit: i read this fanatstic article detailing shostakovich's process and life as he wrote this piece. Apparently, this piece was intended to be his suicide note, akin to Tchaikovsky and his 9th symphony. After reading through what Shostakovich was going through while writing this piece, i couldnt help but cry; both while reading the article and listening to this masterpiece. I feel a whole new level of appreciation for Shostakovich, and also for these performers for doing his work justice. Shostakovichs life was dictated by the Soviet Party, and he deserves all the recognition. (Btw the article im talking about is robertgreenbergmusic.com/the-string-quartet-in-time-of-war-dmitri-shostakovich-string-quartet-no-8-1960/ )

Absolument d'accord avec vous. C'est tout l'univers du Goulag qui est là. Et ce qui console c'est de penser que le monstre Staline et ses sbires du KGB ne l'ont pas entendu.!
They hold unchallenged positions as interpreters of Shostakovich
5:00 i think it's too fast. But I really love how you expressed your emotions on this part 😍
Joyce Del Rosario Personally, I think the fast tempo captures the fear and dread of the movement, but that’s my opinion
Vengoheim listen to Borodin quartet’s recording,It’s really too fast
Zhandos Mansurov not quite as fast but I agree anyway .
Bending the tempo is not a crime like people make it out to be , especially if musicality is preserved
@@zhandosmansurov6668 So? They're still into allegro molto tempo indication.
Need to understand the emotions. There is no fast or slow. There are no rules for this story. It’s not music, it’s life and death of many who lived through this horror.
bro on the far left has the tallest char and is still bouncing out of it
apocalyptic version metal
is it just me or is the second movement slightly sharp?
Stevineon they could be tuning in 442, or 444 which would make their strings higher in pitch.
I think the whole piece is sharp :/
Slightly sharp and too quick
why does the second violinist never look up lol
This piece is rigged when the quarter note sound like 16th note.
The allegro molto was a bit too fast for me but still a stunning performance
lol is it just me or is the first violinists violin small? i could just be me
not in sound
Not my favourite interpretation especially of mov1 however a very refreshing take
I think emotional nuances are lost in SOME places of this often times rushed 2nd movement. Humans can't react that fast to changing moods of others. BUT, there were greatly emotive bits played extraordinarily well.
"Humans can't react that fast to changing moods" - this is a very broad statement. Some can, some can't.
His g string is out of tine
I don't like this fastest verison of second movement. The motif of accelerating this fast is not like that in the second movement in 10th symphony where the maniac caricature figure of stalin benefits the limitless speed. But here thing's different. The cruelty of human disaster can be better illustrated by clearly and fiercely description, rather than hurrican of blurred notes.
Great job!
But 2nd movement ,too fast...
Shostakovich is about deeply meaning, not tempo
q = 240 (in the notes). They played in q = 292!
True that....
Yeah, and faster tempo captures the meaning better. its supposed to sound frantic and anxious, not slow and melodic.
Tocan fantásticamente bien, tendría cuidado con los gestos el viola y primer violín parecen los muppets tocando y eso no es bueno,la expresividad corpórea cuanto menos es mejor.
This is a very good performance....
Intonation and balance is v good most of the time!
however....
Soft dynamics in 1st movement almost non existent....
Tempo in 2nd mov is debatable... If they like it so, and can play it..... Fine with me.....
Balance between 1st and 2nd violins in 2nd mov could be better especially when playing the octaves..
Didn't understand articulation in 3rd mov, with 1st violin playing the repeated cell of the 5 notes (D-D-Eb-D-C B), up at the tip of the bow, on the string.... and NOT off the string.....
Could be a choice of comfort..... similar to playing soft dynamics louder....
Last but not least, I was not touched by this interpretation which is very clearly well prepared... But this could be my fault, as very easily I may not be in the mood and probably couldn't connect....
Anyway, well done... 👏
Typical Shostakovich with shades of 1st and 12 symphonies
First symphony? Where?
This performance is monotonous. Compare it with excellently nuanced Borodin Quartet's.
2nd movent was wwwaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to fast
and im in 7th grade
@@tavit.6036 Awesome. Now you're in 8th grade
Nope.
Articulation is not there. No clarity in the second movement. Second movement is simply a mess.
I entirely disagree with you!
The second movement is indeed intended to be a mess. That's exactly the point of that movement...
Thats literally the point. Its not Mozart. Its supposed to sound, scratchy and dissonant to reflect the absolute horror and anxiety of shostakovich.
what happens is that now there are genius musicians who can play these pieces as they should be played, these geniuses did it perfectly, I recommend you listen to Zoltán Kodály, Sonata in B minor for solo cello, Op.8 by sebastian baverstan then you will know the difference
I don’t man, I think the only thing that held them together throughout the second movement was how _good_ they’re articulation was. I think I would just describe the piece itself as a beautiful mess, not because it sounds bad, but because it sounds like organized chaos.
More neurotic noise from Shostakovich!
Shostakovichs harmony is beautiful
Why listen then?
thats... the point. Its supposed to sound terrified and frantic.
@@ep1x3 Is music the proper medium for raw angst?
@@rd3ster Yes. Yes it is. Why wouldnt it be? Music is about emotion. If you dont like it then dont listen.
