Great first jump! Can't believe how non-nervous you were. I'm going on my first tandem jump soon and I am shaken just thinking about it. Hope I have as good and nice cameraman as you had. :)
I'm going tomorrow for my first time, not for my 18th b-day as I'm 37 but yeah I'm totally freaked out and excited all at once. I'll post mine once I'm safe on the ground LOL
It's all to do with body positioning. Also the tandem instructor throws out a drogue chute which acts as a stabilising chute but also prevents them falling faster than 125 mph. The solo jumper can position his body to fall faster. Normal belly position is about 125 mph. Sitting position is about 145 mph and when solo jumpers go into the head down position they can fall at about 200 mph!
That's a drogue chute. It acts as a stabilising chute but it's main job is to keep the tandems at 125 mph rather than going to 200 mph. As my instructor told me "200 mph may sound cool but you do not want the main chute opening as you are doing 200 as that will be VERY uncomfortable!"
Just watching this gets my heart going.
The only scary part for me was the plane ride up. After that it's a piece of cake! I cannot wait to do it again!

How does the videographer get below the tandem pair in these shots? As a solo jumper he weighs half as much and should thus not fall as fast?
