    Great video, beautiful place!! That’s the one thing I love about sailing, sailors for the most part.....once on land you can’t tell who owns what or which yacht. It’s all about the adventure and sailing.....not about who has the biggest yacht or toys 👍🏻

    Your anchor chain looks to be in pretty good nic. I was wondering if you knew what brand it was or where it came from? A lot of galvanized chain is crap these days.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original owner bought the most expensive stainless steel chain. I don't know the manufacturers name.

    • @scotyfilms
      @scotyfilms 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingAquarius Oh, Hmm. as a commercial fishing skipper I tend to shy away from stainless. I've seen too many blind fractures caused by electrolysis. Galvanized never does that.

    That was probably a 200+ pound Yellow Fin Tuna, that ran off with your line. What a shame y'all didn't get see what it was. That's why they call it fishing, those big salt water pelagic fish are good at stripping all the line off a reel , too get away. Drinking the Coconut milk direct from the tree looked very interesting. I wonder if you get lead poison from long term use of that method?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a big fish on the line, and kind of happy we didn't land it. I like the 20 to 30 pound fish because they fit in the freezer and taste better! We caught a few 60 to 70 pound yellowfins, and they were just too BIG! th-cam.com/video/YnGS5CovcrA/w-d-xo.html

    Such a big boat for a single nice couple. Get some crew! Why not? You’ve got the boat...

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crew, tough to find good crew. We have visitors, Z's mom for example. And what to do with crew when family shows up? We are happy with the current situation, but we do want more guests aboard!

  • @barrythompson8858

    I did not understand the comment concerning the tension between the locals? Did it make your visit uncomfortable?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We were not uncomfortable. The Islanders want sailers to be safe, and have a great time during their visit to Palmerston, and they bend over backwards to make a sailors visit special. But, sometimes you feel the tension between the families on Palmerston. That said, it would probably be worse with my family. Maybe that's why I had to go Sailing on Aquarius. Cheers....

    HI guys really enjoy your videos.On another you tube channel there is a couple with a Amel 54.they were asked what it costs for maintenance per year, they replied 55 thousand euro.I am interested as l would like to start sailing in a year or so once l retire.I feel the Amel is probably one of the most ideal boats for blue water, and considered it as the boat l would like to purchase.I was a little surprised how high the maintenance costs were that high.Do you feel this is a reasonable estimate .Thanks for taking the time to edit and upload videos for us dreamers.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Mike,
      I saw the vid where they did a tour of the Amel 54, and the couple that owned it said it cost 500K euro, and "10%" per year to maintain or 50K euro per year.
      They have only been sailing for 7 months, and the first year we spent at least USD$60K. But that's the first year on ANY boat of that size. You need so much stuff on a boat the first year.. Buy all the spares, and do all the maintenance that the previous owner decided not to completed. And, then, a few sailing mistakes each costing $1K to repair. Starting the engine, forgetting that the sea water valve is closed. (luckily I caught this one early) Anyway, the start up costs can be really high.
      Once your boat is in good repair, and you have learned the proper care and maintenance, an owner doing much of the work him/herself will spend USD$2000 for an Amel 54, and about USD$1500-$2000 for a Super Maramu PER MONTH.
      Here is an example of the real costs....
      (FYI - costs are averaged per year.. You don't need a
      bottom job each year, but it will cost about $1750/year over a
      10 year period)
      Bottom Job - $1750 (each two years or so $3500)
      Electronics - $1000 (Radio goes down, AIS, inst ..)
      Batteries - $1500 (average cost per year)
      Engine - $1000 (Oil change, belts, injectors)
      Genset - $1000 (oil change, belts, injectors)
      Dinghy - $300 (maintenance, outboard etc)
      Watermaker $500 (Filters, and membranes)
      At least two big items $6000 (each $3K or so)
      About $14K
      Then you have to save in your budget for replacement items:
      Dinghy and outboard - Replacement over 12 years. $600 per year
      Sails - Replacement over 10 years $1.2K per year
      Standing Rigging over 10 years $1.2K per year
      Canvas - over 7 years - $500 per year
      $4K in long term costs.
      $18K Total per year - This should keep your boat in really good condition. If you have to spend 50K euros per year on Maintaining your boat, something is really wrong. Some years you may spend
      $30K, and some years you will only spend $6K.
      Insurance USD$6000 each year (for a SM, more depending on value)
      So, there you have it, a good starting point for your budget.
      If you have any additional questions let me know.
      Fair Winds from Aquarius

    Before I post another comment, while I watched your video I did feel and see some underlying 'vides' from the local inhabitants of this Island during your visit, something isn't quite right there but I cant' put my finger on it, so, to avoid any other negative comments towards your hosts I'll stop here and suggest perhaps in the navigation term this "MAY BE AN AREA TO BE AVOIDED", and please correct me otherwise as I would be interested of others opinions on this.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't sail past Palmerston, well worth the visit! Yes, Z and I were a little taken back with our first visit of Edward and his two sons on Sunday, they seemed kind of harsh! But, they were much different the following day, and we had a nice visit there. There are some underlying tensions between families on the island, but they do not involve the sailers. They do their best to keep the Yachties safe, happy, and well fed. Palmerston needs the yachties to visit! So, visit and enjoy! Fair Winds James
      I will say one thing, I think Z and I would have been happier if Bill Clinton was our host...... Good conversation, Coffee, Cake, and yes .... Ice Cream!!!!!

    again...your videos are spoilt by such poor sound production...sooo many youtubers make this mistake....that can be easily corrected....1- use a windsock, 2 roll off the bass frequencies, 3 wear proper headphones so you can hear the recording..4, don't expect to pick up sound more than 4 feet away, 5 use the voice over function of your editing software to narrate the pictures...

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adrian, I agree with you completely! Our sound could be much better... We already have Rode professional mic with windsock, which is on the good camera. Some of our equipment has to remain waterproof so none of this would help. Wearable mic I deem unsafe for us - we are in a sailboat so agility is utmost priority and you can trip over cords. Making Voice Overs we also use professional mic with special equipment. Unfortunately the nature of our videos is quite a big part in a wind and none of us is a pro video or sound editor. I tried to remove bass frequencies on iMovie but did not see any improvement. I would appreciate if you could send a link to certain courses or TH-cam videos how to make these improvements. Work in progress... ☺️

      Only this time ;) When you sail in the open ocean those fishes are BIG! And I don't want them that big... Our little freezer might not be able to handle that and so much work to clean & prepare it!

      @@SailingAquarius Yeah, the fish might be too big and it would be a waste. Maybe you can try out drying it on a line. A bummer you lost the line though.
