For me (born in 65) Bootsie IS British drag racing, my father was race director at the pod when Allen had his final crash, I witnessed Bob Phelps (the pod owner) crying while wiping the roll cage clean, and for the first time in my life, my father also crying. It showed a generation of racers and officials ,just how dangerous drag racing could be. ❤️
Cheers Nick , Nice to see Ol' Bootsie at the end of this one along with the Wheelie Vette passing behind . A tad before my time ( Born in 72 ) I miss the shed (& a face full of hot rubber) & also the smell of the t-shirt shop Garys shack !
I REMEMBER A FUNNEY CARS ENGINE BLOWING and all the bits raining down around us , still try to forget the state of the toilets , even after all these years .
Before my time but what an awesome film. My first adventure to pod was with my grandad in 1978 when I was a toddler. Addicted ever since. My mk2 zodiac SBF 347 stroker project is nearing completion on the driveway and my spaceframed mondeo eurocar drift weapon is sitting on its trailer with new tyres on ready for action. Can't wait for santa pod to open again, I need my adrenaline fix. Let's all make the best of our current situation by staying home, welding bits of junk together and building some wild cars to run at pod when this virus nightmare is over.
Thats exactly what im doing! Building my 1995 Trans Am. May not get to try it out this year but should be all ready for next.. lets hope something doesnt spoil the fun next year!
I remember Mike Collins racing an NSU Prinz :-} He got hold of a '56 (I think) Chevy and rocked up to one meet with it loaded down to the bump stops with cases of beer. Anyone who knew him in those days will also remember a rather obscene joke he did relating to a couple of scars. Good times.
It is still possible to build a car on the cheap. Buy a decent pre made chassis then install any engine and go play. With such a light weight car, any salvage yard engine will do fine.
@@trafalgar624 ?? Will have a look at my old photo`s. . got a feeling it was a single engine,d Harley?? Think it was running 9+ secs 140 ish MPH ?? Cheers
Fabulous, my Dad first took me to the Pod in 1974. Love the very British commentary while the geezers talk racing.
This is an amazing snap shot of early british drag racing.Just the strip and the fantastic "Cow shed".
God bless Bootsie R.I.P. gone but not forgotten

Just graduated from high school in 70,had my 67 olds 442,rock&roll on the radio, and had a local drag strip. Love those days.
Even though Bootsie doesn't look to be all that far past being a teenager,he still gets to be considered a veteran in 1970!

The tee shirt shop was cool. The cow shed was a great place to be.Born in 71 i share those great times at the pod too.

Toilets were famous. A poll was taken to see if money should be spent on new toilets or if the track should be resurfaced. The track was resurfaced.
Today I wish it was 1970. 👀

Heck yea!! Youngstown, Ohio U.S.A.
Does anyone know who kept time in those days and who did it?
I know it’s digital nowadays
Great video, may I have another?
Hard to believe even back then you could build a car for only 3 or 4 hundred pounds.

My parents home in 1970 3 bed semi was £7000.A good time to be alive.
Love it
