When I was getting majorly interested in cinema for the first time when I was 25, the filmmaker who most effected me was Satyajit Ray. I felt I had discovered a true genius and a man of such immense depth that I was awed by his works. Specifically seeing The World of Apu was a moment that I’ll never forget. Words can’t express how much I love him and his work. Thanks for this excellent video and essay. Love from Missouri, USA
Great video, I was disappointed with the information about the other two in the trilogy though because I haven’t seen them yet and wasn’t expecting spoilers in a discussion about the first one specifically
Beautiful tribute to a genius filmmaker! It makes me so happy that you chose to begin your channel with Ray 😭. Can't wait to see more of your video essays. Keep growing
Perhaps I haven't heard a better evaluation of the masterpiece. The work of art has been rightly elucidated in art. The work you birthed is art. I feel enriched. I'm happy and proud of the fact that I know both of you personally. Please go on creating more of such videos with the commendable flairs you both been gifted with. The natural reality is at it's best. If only Ray was here to see this tribute, I think he would have patted your backs cheered you both. Loved this, honestly. Keep posting 🖤
Realistic analysis- interpretation of characters and natural relationships between are well said. Even after so many years, the perspective of the film is relevant to us. Good job done.
Great to see people decoding although 'Decoding' 100% might not be possible for such a brilliant film by a genius. Well done. Looking forward to more videos.
Painting a poverty stricken picture of India at the global stage when its PM was pushing for garibi hatao didn't result in getting sedition charges slapped against Ray. In fact, Indira Gandhi was among his greatest admirers and Ray among her staunchest critics through his cinemas. There was no dichotomy in the goal of a prosperous future, Ray being the bold genius depicted truth through his lens, Gandhi through her leadership. Cancel culture of today's age inhibits such Rays from flourishing. However, being an optimist I can see a *Ray* of hope at the end of the tunnel.
The first time I saw Pather Panchali, I was extremely disturbed. Why were the characters not doing anything to escape their poverty? How could they play, eat, live so freely when.. But then I realised this isn't set in the time I live in, and maybe the people who grew up then needed this kind of hope. As someone who grew up with poverty it was just triggering. Or maybe I'm just used to films that offers practical solution. The cinematography was beautiful, but I keep getting the feeling the story is only half complete. correct me if I'm wrong.
Well, the story feels only half complete since it is the first in the trilogy. There are two films in the franchise that sort of explore what you are saying - Apu actively tries to study and make it in the flawed system. But at the same time, this story is set in British India, where there wasn't any way for the poor to escape poverty, and maybe it even isn't now for a lot of people. Children coming from poverty still have fun and try to be happy, even if they don't have resources, because kids are full of life, we can't judge them through an adult lens.

This takes me back to a poem I read in school by Percy Bysshe Shelly -Ozymandias which is an unerring reminder of the final destiny of despots. :)
@@moviemirage I dreamt of despots dancing to despacito in a post apocalyptic, intergalactic strip club cum bar
