Our first full ‘Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow’.
Jon Pertwee use to tease Roger Delgado about how scared he was of everything. When they were filming the part with them floating in the sea, he would always say about how Roger was so terrified about going in the water, that it was hard enough getting him onto the boat to take them out there to film it.

    • @karlmortoniv2951

I think I remember reading or hearing somewhere (maybe on one of the commentaries) that Delgado was even skittish about being driven by someone else. He’d wonder if they were qualified, how was their driving record, that kind of thing, and was freaking out a bit about the driver in Turkey who drove the car in the accident that killed him. 😔

Always been one of my favourites. Roger Delgado was so great. Although he was in a lot of stories, in retrospect it's good we got to see him so much as the Master. He was a gentle, sweet bloke by all accounts, and terrified of water in the filming of this story according to Jon Pertwee.

In Quatermass II he played the journalist later played by Sid James in the film version. Just imagine if it had been Roger Delgado instead of Sid James in all those Carry On Films...

@@petersvillage7447 He played a lot of characters in the ITC serials, very often a Middle Eastern villain or a Spanish Ambassador - hence the joke in one of the UNIT stories about arresting the Spanish Ambassador by mistake. @@harnois75 Delgado's dark looks owed a lot to his Spanish father, and his full name - a real humdinger! - was Roger Cæsar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto. With a name like that, I'd guess that his Spanish ancestors must have been rather special people.

@@harnois75 Oh, I know - I've seen photos of him in The Three Musketeers, which I would have loved to have seen... and I always find his presence in the radio series The Slide incredibly apt since he's playing a rather Doctor-ish figure in a story that mutated into a Doctor Who story. Though I have to say, I also get a kick out of seeing him in the 'forgotten' Hammer film 'Terror of the Tongs'. It's rather bizarre that somebody thought that they could stick a fez on him and he'd look right at home in a Chinese Criminal Gang, but any organisation that includes Roger Delgado AND Christopher Lee in its leadership is one to be feared..!

When the minister showed up, I immediately thought of Jess saying, "there's ALWAYS one asshole who complicates things!" I share your feelings on the sound effects in this story. I couldn't hear some of the Sea Devils' lines and had to mute the episode when the "diversion" was going on.
I liked your analysis of the Master's character, especially referring back to The Mind of Evil. I'm new to this period of Classic Who too and I get the vibe that the Master is all about not wanting to feel inferior. His biggest fear was the Doctor looking down on him and laughing, he talked in Colony in Space about the only two options being to rule or serve and he's always frustrated about his lack of freedom whenever he's imprisoned (which happens a LOT). It seems like he's all about winning, or at least beating the Doctor at something, no matter what his evil plot is. Particularly last season, when he has a different scheme every story.

Always found it interesting that Mac Hulke came up with the concept of the Silurian rulers of Earth and the usurper apes in view of the preceeding Pierre Boulle novel 'Monkey Planet' and the subsequent 'Planet of the Apes' film, but this time from the reptilian point of view. Jon Pertwee paid Roger Delgado a compliment regarding the filming, saying that he - Jon - always loved the adrenalin-rushing foolhardy dangerous sports, the speed, etc, whilst to Roger, a glass of port, by the fireside with some comfy slippers was his idea of an adventurous entertainment. Therefore, for Roger to do all the sea-borne action, float in the sea, with no real idea how to swim, was a very brave thing for him to do and took some courage on his part.

The Doctor is willing to sacrifice themselves, the Master is not. So when the poop hits the fan The Master will always try to run away, the Doctor faces it head-on.

I’m not sure I’d say the Master wants the Doctor’s approval, but rather that he wants to one-up the Doctor- and for the Doctor to admit that he’s done it. If he can stop the Doctor from achieving something he wants, or can achieve something the Doctor wants to prevent, he’s finally won a round. In both Classic and New Who, we’ve had references to the fact that the two of them were childhood friends. We get no details, but I’ll bet that one feature of their once-friendship was that the Doctor won every contest between them, and the Master has never gotten over trying to even the score. In that aspect this makes him Loki to the Doctor’s Thor, or Nebula to the Doctor’s Gamora, full of resentment over always having been second-best.

People who think Doctor Who is woke now haven’t truly watched any Doctor Who. From The Daleks in 1963 the show has been political. And to all the people who say it was subtle back then it really wasn’t. Case and point The Sunmakers or The Green Death. In fact I’d say this current era is saying less than any previous era.

Jess does actually address this at the start of her next reaction and explains how difficult that can be to do. Sources are limited for a show so old, so you don't really get the luxury like you might with other shows where you maybe only need to search 'Supernatural S04E14' or whatever. I'm sure even if the title is revealed to her it won't ruin anything.

With Kismet Delgado refuting Jon Pertwee's claim that her husband was terrified of the water, you wonder why any actor would agree to scenes that were going to utterly traumatize him in such a manner. But Jon is right at home. Give him a fast car, a motor-trike, a jet-ski... he's right on it. I wonder what the insurance was like.

If you’re a working actor, you go where you’re told and get the lines out when the camera’s running. Unless you’re a big star they’ll get someone else who doesn’t object and you’d be out of a job. Jack Palance was said to be terrified of horses but played in more than a few westerns, for example.

The Master's face crumpling as he realises the Doctor is one step ahead again turns up reconfigured in Nu-Who multiple times (understandably, since those stories are by a generation of writers who recall - and were directly impacted by - this era). But I think the other important moment comes way later, in 'The Timeless Children', were The Master acknowledges how his nemesis always acted like they were something special. It almost feels like a jilted lover, or someone so awestruck by the other person that they spend the rest of their days trying to make up to them. I suppose a lot of us have found ourselves in that position. We don't usually try and commit genocide in order to deal with it though!

I think The Sea Devils is one of these stories that could do with a new musical score as the 1970's one is just too experimental and at times can be a little painful to sensitive ears. As for the story, it's one of my favourites and would love to see the Sea Devils make a comeback in New Who. Great reaction 👍👏. All the very best, Trev from East London, UK.

Roger Delgado couldn't swim and had a fear of the ocean, so recording the last bit when he and the Doctor are floating in the submarine escape suits, waiting to be rescued was not a happy moment for him. Obviously it was a stuntman filling in for him in the chase scene. You're analysis of his version of the Master is interesting. And you're certainly right in that proving himself to be as smart or smarter than the Doctor is at least part of his motivation.

Submariners have, and had, more relaxed rules while at sea--especially the nuclear missile boats which would have been submerged for months at a time. Regulations were never specific, the RAF regulation in my time (80s/90s) was merely that "the hair of the head is to be neat and well trimmed" and even within that, interpretation was far more relaxed among officers than with other ranks.
