Side by side comparison GTA V vs GTA IV. Comparing which is better when driving.
Guys, which one do you prefer more between GTA V or GTA IV physics, mechanics and car damage. Some of you asked me to do a driving physics and here it is. Tell me what you like the most from both of them. Also, tell me what you don't like from both of them. Grand Theft Auto has improved it's mechanics and physics over the years, but GTA 5 sure seems to be doing great.

The reason they changed the physics was due to a vocal minority of casual gamers that bitched because they couldn't make a turn without crashing
Its the same reason why casual gamers like the arcadey Need for Speed games and hate Gran Turismo. They always complain that the cars are too slow and that they spin out to easy.
They made almost every car in GTAV accelerate like they all have supercharged V8s with the weight and handling of a Mclaren F1. I honestly prefer GTA4 over GTA5 for the driving mechanics alone

colonelbongwater it felt like i had to do a lot more work to get 100 percent completion in sa than gtav, the gtav check list for 100 percent was too easy

GTA V was also a Ped physics downgrade. In IV it was so fun pushing people down stairs, the rag doll was so much better and the cops were funnier and had more personalities and much more fun to troll rather than the ones in V

Gta v obviously has usa cops. They dont mind you speeding, going trough red ligts, and crashing into other cars (which sometimes kills driver), but if you stare at them for too long or try to talk to them, they will shoot you.

You don't really see them patrolling, unless you're atthe airport, or the police station.

But I totally understand why R* went with a simpler driving style for V, and as much as I hate to say it. I think it was the right move.... Because we are in the minority, most people don't know how to, or even care to know how to drive with more challenging physics. And Rockstar is just aiming to please the masses..

I have a 260 216 core which I bought for £50GBP 2yrs ago, i'd imagine u could get a gtx560 (non ti) for the same now. Also q6600 Intel Quad core £30, s775 mobo £30 and 4gb 1333mhz ddr3 £10 u have a gaming pc for a ton and 20 which is good money in anybodys language for a Quad core pc that could max (almost) any game from before 2012 and decent settings on newer games, might need 4 gig more ram for 64bit tho.. could prob take GTA5 with very nice settings.
Too bad i need a new RAM, My RAM got replaced somehow, When i bought my pc it has 4GB ram, Somehow it got replaced to 1GB, I can't play any good games anymore..

GTA IV has far superior physics and damage. When you're going top speed in GTA IV it actually feels intense because you can quite easily lose control whereas on GTA 5 when you're driving at top speed it doesn't feel nearly as intense because the cars handle unrealistically well. Also drifting is so much more enjoyable on GTA IV because you can get realisticly long drifts on GTA IV where you can control the car throughout the drift. Vehicles on GTA 5 have way to much grip to make drifting any fun. Overall driving is much more fun, realistic, challenging and therefore rewarding on GTA IV.
I think driving in gta 4 is extremely unrealistic and stupid and the physics make no sense at all because if cars would handle like this in real life we better get rid of any cars
GTA 4 driving mechanic is a bad joke. Not even real cars don't peform like those in GTA 4, but suprisingly, more like those in GTA 5. Not saying driving in GTA 5 is perfect, far from it. But stuck up fans blinded by stupid nostalgia are grinding my gears.
@@Antimanele104 You all are absurd lol. If you tried making these sharp turns in real life at like say, 40-50mph you would drift like this too and lose control. I don't think you realize how fast you are driving on gta IV most of the times which is why you think its stupid
@@Anas-rx9zs 40-50 mph = almost 70-80 km/h which in this case, I'd understand. I am talking about cars turning at a mere 30-40 km/h on a dry road in a sunny day and oversteering like hell. The devs themselves said that the driving mechanic was overly exaggerated in the game.

people wanna bag on Gta 4's driving just cause they dont get how driving really works, they dont get how torque or weight really feels Gta 4 had the perfect balance as where 5 decreased it an tightened it up for higher speeds an easier handling so everyone had an even chance of getting use to it problem is since they did that its impossible to drift correctly, the burnouts have no realistic effects especially with bikes an the overall feel of it is completely arcade style. now idk about these kids that say gta 5's driving is the best since most of them have probably never driven a real car to begin with but i dont want arcade i want realism an the driving in gta 5 lacks alot of it.

yeah its possible but you cannot drift completely right. sure you can slide on corners but Gta 5's physics prevent alot of wheel spin the whole key to drifting all it does is bog out an wont break loose an get the tires good an hot this also effects the realism of burnouts as i mentioned in the earlier comment by not being able to get your car good an sideways for very long without losing power (hence why i mentioned torque.)

It's easy to make GTA IV look bad when you compare two totally different cars. It isn't fair to compare a Tailgater, a modern sedan, with a Marbelle, an 80s-looking car.

ToBlue1 *impossible and in real life it's not supposed to be easy to make a 90 degree turn at 150 mph. GTA IV IS more realistic and it personally felt more fun to me because of the extra challenge it brought to the game. GTA V's driving feels like it was designed for all the filthy casuals tbh

GTA IV'S driving was certainly not better when the cars understeer and are way too loose that they do double barrel rolls.
In fact I'd say Rockstar has to work on the driving mechanics. Neither games have realistic driving. The only thing is that V was easier and the cars stick to the road unlike the cars in IV, which made it better for me.
But from a neutral view, the driving needs improvement and neither is better than the other.

Was really disappointed with the crashing dynamics in GTA 5 opposed to GTA 4. Both games have their faults when it comes to Driving. But I personally enjoyed destroying the cars in GTA 4 and indulging in derbys and such online. But they sacrifice to move forward I suppose. GTA 4 is still a lovely game.
In GTA V cars are 2 times faster. But when you crash at full speed the visual damage is big shit compared to GTA IV.
And the driving sucks too compared to IV.
Gamers can never be satisfied. They changed the driving physics of gta 5 because almost everyone complained that the cars in gta 4 handled like boats and were too unwieldy to have fun with. Now they have made the driving more arcade like and still the gamers complain. I've been driving for nearly a decade and I can say that neither 4 or 5 are particularly realistic, granted I've not driven a big old American car, maybe they do try to roll over at every corner but I also know that cars don't have to come to a stop every time you pull the hand brake before they can pull off again. I've personally had more fun from driving in gta 5 despite it being *more* unrealistic and fun is to me what games should be.

Richard Roberts I did not complain about GTA IV car physics. It was really good. Huge leap from San Andreas.
Not only this - even police AI was way better - they did not see the player everywhere, there was a logic search area, etc... Also - corpses, burnt cars etc. did not disappear once you turn around, but stayed for a long time.
GTA - San Andreas was very overrated. The only problem - GTA IV had unrealistic graphics with excessive bloom, some diffuseness. Thankfully, graphic mods corrected this.

GTA 4 had better car physics - general handling, damage, acceleration

In 4, the cars look and feel like they have weight to them. I prefer 4. In my opinion, 5 has very bad driving physics. The cars move like a game from 2005. That's bull shit.

Totally agree it's such a shame they dumbed down the driving.....So easy and unrealistic now, hopefully on 6 they'll actually work on the driving, they surely cannot dumb it down anymore.
I suppose Rockstar made these changes to save players' nerves and to make driving more pleasant. As for me, I'd prefer a golden mean between IV and V. But less car damage makes me sad, and I can't stand that "move your L stick to control the car in the air". This sucks(
I didn't play GTA V yet, but i can see the driving sucks, specially the bikes, i loved the quasi-simulation driving in GTA IV, you could feel the weight, the cars had suspension. one of the thing i like doing in GTA IV is to master all vehicles, dodging traffic in a blista compact is the shit

Heh, nobody can be nostalgic about something that recent. They made the driving aspect less realistic in V. It's very evident. Some people like it. Some people don't.
A lot of people say, " You can do more in GTA V." That's true, but it's Grand Theft AUTO. The driving shouldn't be lame.
Also, when 6 comes out, the people who now prefer 4 over 5, will prefer 4 over 6 because the developers probably won't bring back the driving realism that 4 has.

Since when does an actual car handle like a boat and spin out over the smallest accidents? GTA IV driving is not realistic whatsoever. GTA V driving was intended to have a racing feel. In GTA IV a freaking lambourghini goes 0 to 60 in like 20 seconds. That is not realistic.
The steering wheel feels like it's jammed and the car takes way long to do a complete turn.
From my driving experience in real life. GTA IV is not even close to realistic. It's just different from V's driving is all while neither are going to be like real life.
GTA V's steering physics are more realistic.
But in the end, if you try turning at an extreme speed in both games, you will spin out.

GTA IV's physics blew me away. I didn't enjoy it as much when applied to bikes (not nearly nimble enough) but power sliding a Dukes during a police chase made me feel like a goddamn PRO!

You could and real life by putting the tires in the direction you want to go and the weight with move to that side causing it to flip.

The only things unrealistic about GTA V are its Pixar characters and lack of vehicle damage.
Rockstar always said during the development stages of GTA5 that people disliked the overly realistic physics engines so they made it easier. Perfect example of this is being bale to flip your car.
I used to love getting into a 6 star chase and accidentally flipping a car in GTA4. The tension of having to escape the wreck was so much more fun than just flipping it back over.
Same with driving itself, the way you had to balance the car and counter body roll in GTA4 was brilliant!

I have both, I play GTA 4 almost daily, haven't touched 5 in months. I remember when I first played GTA 5 I thought: 'I can't believe I waited 5 years for this piece of shit'.

GTA 4 had nice crash physics but it always felt like my car would flip if I turned at 15 mph.
i wonder if anyone has though of the type of tires cars may have the old cars will have bad tires so handling is going to be worse new car good tires tight handling and the fact that some cars are top heavy like the dukes it has a high center of gravity so it will flip more easily than say the merit you see what im saying

My opinion: Gta IV is better, and here's my explain: Gta V looks very nice with the mountains, water, enviroment etc. But the rest of Gta V is like shit to me, you can't do anything in your appartement, you cant drive into your garage yourself, it goes automaticly. You can gain/earn cash to easy and to much. If you kill someone inside a property he will spawn again in the property and not outside the gates. You can flip your car if you are upside down, you can move your car in the air, and all the other reasons why i like gta iv more, you can see it in the video. Gta V is just to much extra, too much added. Gta IV is classic, original. Sorry for my not so good english

GTA IV has more realistic driving than GTA V. In GTA IV it feels like the cars actually have weight.

Siri Rii Driving a car in real life takes much less skill however. And GTA IV physics do have great physics. For boats at least, but not for cars.
It's not supposed to be driving simulation. There is a lot of tight corners, and turns in gta v if it had gta 4 physics we'd be flying off the road at every turn.
I think the exact opposite. In GTA IV, it feels like your cars are weightless and are sliding on butter.

Bland and depressing. Just like real life. Except in GTA4 you actually got the power to do what the hell you want. You play through GTA4, MrAviation? You remember early in the game, Faustin asks you to teach a laundromat owner a lesson? After you wreck his shop, he tells you one last thing before you go. He says he thought he would escape that kind of life when he left his homeland. Right then and there (Aside from Roman and his titties and bowling obsession) I knew that the writers understood what they were doing. That game is dark, and it's why I love the idea of GTA. Also, the color scheme can be indicitive of the theme of the game, but I honestly think it was that way because they couldn't make the game look as nice back way then. Any mods for GTAIV such as IceEnhancer essentially change the color pallete and the game can still keep its theme.

I don't mind the driving physics. What disappointed me in GTA V though, was that people were WAY weaker. A fucking leg shot is enough to kill them. I loved GTA IV's ragdoll physics, and how characters would sorta drunk-walk as you shot them. It's not satisfying to headshot someone in GTA V if they're just gonna die when you shoot them in the arm once too.

I really prefer the driving in gta iv. Driving fast felt way more haphazard and you could see the weight shifting in the vehicle around turns and quick stops. That being said the cover/shooting system was greatly improved gta iv made me want to tear my hair out sometimes in that respect

One thing I miss from GTA IV was that you can always correct your driving mistakes if you spin out going really fast by holding the gas and brake, then turning left or right to straighten yourself out.

GTA V's driving physics were specifically programmed with GTA Online in mind, so every car felt the same, easy to drive, with little damage so there's less time wasted to get personal vehicles repaired, especially driving around the countryside off-road. By comparison, IV's vehicle physics took getting used to, slid about (on flat road), and collisions were far more brutal. Although I prefer IV's driving by a country mile for its realism, you can see now why V's driving got the Midnight Club treatment. Since V is the last campaign of the franchise, it's impossible to say if/when the driving will be improved or balanced out.
+Faisal Masab I can definitely see how they've shifted the target audience. Not saying that the older characters were realistic, but they had a more 'adult' feel to them. the GTA V characters by comparison feel like cartoons, esp trevor.

You can't even make a proper comparison, over half of the evidence is so different from eachother that it does not qualify to make an opinion of.
Having both games, I can say that, hands down, GTA V was nothing but a downgrade in many ways. Not all, such as the map, but very many outside of that. Even the guns are terrible.
If you're going to make comparisons, at least make them somewhat equal.
Far from, half of the small features they made I bet you don't even know about, shooting the gas tank, shooting the oil tube to make the car leak oil, getting hurt overtime, guns are actually way better in gta 5 from sounds to how they shoot without being just pepper pellets that the people apparently eat in gta 4, gta V was a huge improvement, you sound like someone who just watched a video and all of a sudden think they're a know it all about the game, commen sense will tell you gta v was an upgrade in every single way, maybe not a small crack in the wall (oh btw it does happen), maybe not bleeding even with a helmet on lol, but everything is better in gta V and there isn't one thing u can call out as a downgrade

I honestly don't know why everyone is choosing GTA 4 over GTA 5. In GTA 4 there is a very limited amount of activities to do in the game. You couldn't dive under water, you couldn't buy cars or customize them, you couldn't buy more properties, there are no heists, and etc. I would keep going, but the list keeps getting longer and longer. I enjoy the driving in GTA 5 a lot better than 4. GTA 5 is just a better game overall. Just my opinion.

***** Yes I have. I did the whole story in less than 24 hours game time. You can crouch and sneak in GTA SA. THe cars actually damage in GTA SA and that even using the old engine before the RAGE was done. The 103 (V has 69) mission storyline made total sense with the villain - a famous actor (Samuel L. Jackson) in which CJ needed to find the murderer of his mother and takes him through his home life out of it into the countryside, the burliness of SF, the full desert action and the constant bright lights of casino filled LV. Each with it's own theme and setting which are all unique to each other (Which V can't do since it has 1 little city and landscaping).
Adding to the map, there are many interiors that aren't just copy and pasted like V (look at our apartments). And GTA SA, VC, VCS and IV all have fast food interiors which V doesn't. Yes V has ragdoll physics but that's so Saints Row - there's no purpose for it either. Insurance fraud on SR gave ragdoll a reason.
Remember GTA SA is made on a bullet/euphoria engine rented and now R* have RAGE specifically for it. Ofcourse there is differences, bit you're looking at the graphical side when you need to understand gamepaly, physics, interactions, coding, A.I, environment etc.
GTA V car is Mario Kart, it's aimed for kids. Easy steering and super brakes. Also the mass of the cars are hilariously pathetic - the LSPD (Let's Spawn Police Department - because R* are Lazy) can stop you in a heavy vehicle. I can't ram vehicles out the way in a truck. The mass id set to class and decreased upon player_enter. Now GTA IV, each vehicle has it's own handling.dat and stays like it upon entry. That's realistic.
Yes SA did have less but look at the memory capacity we have now SA takes like 5 mins to download because it's technically small data now.
As I said earlier, graphics are just there for viewing pleasure, like having a girlfriend model. It's about the programming, player options, gameplay, story, and most importantly a sufficient amount of content for the player. GTA V is like a demo in content compared to SA.
Give someone both games and see how long it takes for them to 100% each game. The fair test shows the facts.
The driving in GTA 5 and the damage is a joke, they have taken 1000 steps backwards, brb hit a bus, no significant damage to your car, but in GTA 4 w=it caves in one side of the car that the bus hit. The one thing I miss most is the vehicle damage and bullet impact from GTA IV.
When you crash a car in GTA IV, the impact feels very accurate and deep, while in GTA V, it feels bumped down and recoiled.

vlad marian I accept your opinion, but the driving is the easiest, not the best. The cars in V accelerate up to their top-speed in 10 seconds. You can drive around corners in top-speed (try in reality or GTA IV) - the thing is, in GTA IV you need to use the brakes. And the cars actually have weight, unlike these toys in GTA V.

You do, but you need to drive faster to fly out the windscreen in GTA5. It's not as easy to do so in GTA5 since sometimes in GTA4, you could be driving at 20mph, hit a barrier and then you go flying. Plus, crashing at very high speed in GTA5 will throw you out the car and kill you.
I guess people in Liberty City don't wear seat belts because Niko was flying out the window pretty much every crash.

I like the driving style in both games for very different reasons. GTA V feels like an old-school racing game, whereas GTA IV seems to be going for a bit more realism, although they could've toned down the boatlike handling a little bit. I enjoyed both games for their own very different reasons. They are quite different.

well i love gta5 physics because you can finally turn a corner at high speeds and not crash or flip your car and if you do you can roll it over but in gta4 if you flip a car its done for and lots of my new nice cars fliped so gta 5 has great driving physics and gta5 has so so so SOOO many car to drive (mic drop)

People honestly have to be bling to think that the damage physics in Gta IV are better.
At 5:44 the vehicle's hood has a random dent on it, that wasn't even a point of impact. The bumper (which is what hit the ground) looks to be in almost perfect shape, maybe just a little dented since the game can't handle much damage beyond that until it just falls off.
At 1:31, well, this explains itself. There is a random spike in the middle of the bumper, with some stretches across the whole front of the car to simulate damage, as well as some dents across the bumper which don't look like they belong there.
I love Gta IV, and it did have some pretty impressive damage physics for its time, but Gta V is clearly the winner when it comes to vehicle damage. I dare anyone to prove otherwise. And saying some bullshit like "but damage happens more easily in Gta IV, but the damage in Gta V is not as visible after crashes at almost the speed!", this does not prove that they are more realistic, or even look better. All this proves is exactly what you said, the damage happens more easily in Gta IV. This does not necessarily mean it is more realistic.
Remember, the damage detail is what really proves how realistic the physics are, not the amount of it!

I don't understand GTA 5's cars. They speed up really fast and sometimes turn really fast, like there's no buildup or friction or even physics. GTA 4 on the otherhand has cars that speed up over time and slow down over time.
This, you just described my problem with GTA V physics.

Once the PC version of V comes out I bet there will be mods that bring the physics from IV to V.
GTA V has the driving physics of GTA Vice City
I guess Gta IV's physics is much more realistic. I think the software engineers and the staff who made the V, had a choice, they had to speed the physics up in case of new players wouldnt got bored. Both games are perfect, and I play them both. GTA for life. It's a lifestyle
But there is something I disagree about that the cars run just completely unbalanced, and unlike the real cars, they slide as though they were on the icy and slippery ground.
Yeah, I don’t get why people say GTA IV’s driving is “realistic” when cars don’t drive like that at all. Sounds like a bunch of 12 year olds.

Jackson T I'm gonna need a translation of that, i'm going to assume you meant something like "it does not have the worst driving in GTA history". if it was that, I would have to disagree. you can make turns that do not make sense at the speed you are going, you have move your car while it is in the air, both of these are features that make the driving bad, the second issue is actually part of why they do not have tow trucks in the multiplayer.
So true even when your upside down in a car in gta 5 you can move the thumb stick and ital flip right back up

Am i the only one who hated GTA IVs driving physics? I found the cars too floppy and hard to control, plus they only took like 5 hits without blowing up.

Wade Barrett GTA IV Handling files are experimental to see if it's really realistic or close to being realistic which clearly is not.
