QOTD: What helps you to feel focused? Do you have a pre-writing ritual that gets you into the right headspace to create? Tell us about it!📖✨

In order to signal in on the creative side of my mind, I usually listen to playlists I created for my characters. I found that music focuses me throughout my entire writing session. Also, I say a prayer before every writing session, which is a ritual that centers my mind and gives my mind a moment to take a breath before diving into the process of writing.

I listen to playlists too, but most of the time I wait for the 'right headspace' to come naturally and then I try my very best to make it possible to write asap. It's not always possible, obviously, because I go to work 5 times a week, but that's okay. I'm happy for every single time I'm able to do it this way. 🤓

I do what I call a scene study to get in the right mindset. Since I'm more of a plotter, answering a pre-set question list for whatever I want to work on helps get me excited and ready to tackle whatever I need to write. (What is the character expecting to happen in the scene? What is the characters misbelief in the scene, does it change? Why do they believe it? What is each character's agenda? What happens when the characters don't get what they want? What does the reader know? How does this scene change the story? Etc.)

What's really weird is that sometimes turning the TV on for background noise helps me focus. It's also just something to look up at when I'm stuck during writing. Keep your phone out of reach and if you writing with a device, don't open a crap ton of tabs. Have a research page, a document (word, google docs, etc.), and a music tab. Keep it simple so you don't start jumping over to other tabs.

"Music is instrumental" 😆 I love it... THAT'S the kind of 'creative accident' that happens when you start your morning like an Emmons sister! 🤘🤙

For myself it's at night after my busy day schedule is over I found that is when my creativity is most active for writing

Hey you two. I like listening to your podcast, but I feel the need to give you a short feedback. I hope you don't feel offended by that, but I think you're repeating yourself a lot lately with all the focus/concentration/mindfullness stuff you say. I'd love hearing you talk about a whole new topic.

Love this! I use music to get me in the zone for writing. I add songs to a playlist whenever I find ones that remind me of the story's theme/truth or relationship between characters. I'm excited to check out the immersive writing session Abbie created - they sound amazing!

I meditate on scripture and ask the Holy Spirit to help me with my writing...
This works especially well before I go to sleep, or during a break in my day...
The Holy Spirit has given me book titles, chapter direction and even specific dialog...
Peace of mind comes through the relationship with the Lord...

Ooo... Abbie saying that playing piano can inspire her gave me a such cool idea - since my MC is a pianist, I think it would help get me into the mood to play piano for a bit before I sit down to write... ahhh I can't wait to do this!!! 🤩

Legit I start listening to the dark fantasy track when I write my book. I queue up a few more behind it but that one is always the first. Thanks for making it!!

I have been using the Forest app on my phone along with a playlist of writing sprints here on TH-cam (including Abbie's) to help me stay focused.

My distractions are usually inside my own head. Mindful meditation practice may be the solution.

Can you recommend a playlist that fits my preference for some experimental/challenging music? Something that makes you do things with intention, and tap into a part of your brain that allows for the unexpected?

fellow ND here. More you think negativelly about you, more fuel you give to executive disfunction. You're struggling and need help. You are worthy and loved. You have to believe that will be better once you will find right accomodations. For me it was accepting my neurodivergency with all of ups and downs. I know that I need right ambient music to distract me from real world sounds, I need to stim if I stuck, I need to work at evenings when light does not buggs me. And I have to take my meds regularly. Like really. Also - meditation is no-no for me. My mind reacts to it completely opposite than NT mind will. Instead of calming it's unnerving and just creates more anxiety with even more erratic thoughts...
