The irony of the English version of the girl from Ipanema is that it stripped away the swing in Bossanova. There’s a massive difference between the Portuguese lyrics and the English lyrics. Anyway, love Astrud, but also love the irony when people say her version of that song brought bossa nova to the masses

What I found kinda strange is that most Brazilian people I met showed a somewhat disdain for Astrud. Maybe it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. I don't really know. But she was certainly the right person in the right place at the right time to make Bossa Nova reach its worldwide audience. Not bad for a 23 years woman who was in ove with popular Brazilian music. I hear you, I am Brazilian who came to USA in 1961 at age of 12, I am now 74. I don't think Brazilians had "disdain" over Astrud, I would categorize it more as a "disconnect" from Brazil resulting by her move to live in USA. I had no choice about coming to USA as I was only 12, my family came to Chicago as a total relocation. I still have many friends in Brazil and been traveling there since my early 20's on a regular basis, I noticed many people calling me " o Americano" , " the American" when down there, but, it never bothered me. So, maybe this is what happened to Astrud, on a very larger scale, she was famous, I am not , regards to you from Chicago.
