- Michael Versteeg is something of a trail running relic. He operates like the old days prior to the word ‘elite’ even being a modifier of ‘trail running’.
In this episode he talks about his race - Saddles 100, Satisfy Running, Aravaipa, + more.
I’ve been looking forward to this for a while.

Nice work getting MV on the show. He is like an 80's garageband, ya never no what you will get but, good or bad, it is always Satisfying!
Haha. 80s GarageBand. Hilarious.
Legend! It’s always interesting seeing the different ways people view this sport. What it is/was/is becoming/what it should become. Versteeg’s punk rock attitude towards it is one of my favorites.
I agree. And the diverse takes on the sport from people who all tie the same starting line is great. I also enjoy Versteeg’s take on the sport and life.
Versteeg really thinks like the rest of us. Great interview for the people in small communities all over, running trails and logging roads for hours and loving it. I happen to run my local hills and logging roads, finding and following single tracks along the timberline pondering things and wondering what the future of this sport will be. Versteeg gives me hope.
Yes. He’s a relic. I think the future looks more like him than the alternative. I hope, at least!
I so appreciate Michael Versteeg! My running marathons and ultras were in the 1980s and 1990s when running life was simpler and just fun. There were no pros, coaches, fancy food or drinks. Just running trails and roads for the joy of it. Go Michael. I love your style!
Yes, he represents a great era of ultra running.
Nice job on the interview. It’s interesting how some interviewees drive the conversation and others need you to drive. Different levels of energy for sure. I enjoy them all, and I appreciate your ability to keep them moving. I found Michael intriguing and related to him in a few ways.
100%. That’s exactly how I described this conversation to a friend. Versteeg had things on his mind and I was just trying to keep up!
Mike is rad because he's never just talking about his splits or nutrition, it's more about how he sees the world
@@borderlandstrA couple of other notes….I loved the conversation about the irony of awarding speed in endurance events (maybe because I’ll never be on the podium). I want to enjoy the accomplishment of finishing an event without having to justify hiking part of the distance. I’m not there yet.
I also loved his comment on being on a run and imagining how he would word it on social media. Guilty as charged. I’m going to work on slowly separating myself from the need for social approval. Do you approve? Lol.
Ha. Yes. Me too. He’s nothing if not honest!
Pretty common for hit interviews to morph into a self-directed therapy session.
There are much more to ultra running in Europe than UTMB and other big races. Ultras in Europe can be exactly as down to earth, intimate and non-commercial as Saddles 100 or similar races.
Good point. UTMB is just taking up all the bandwidth right now and, for a lot of American ultra runners, was the first race we learned about in Europe.
A fact that UTMB is big here in France, pushing most of the runners look and be like salomoon runners...
Europe needs more community runs and independent races, to be franc...big trade marks are just taking people to buy stuff not even trying to create communities, its just like bring more money and more you pay, more you enjoy...
Yeahhh bring Saddles in EU to France!!
Would be amazing!
Love this guy....holy shit!
National treasure.
Wow this guy is awesome wtf
He’s super legit.
There is a difference between capitalism and corporate capitalism, which is closer to communism
