The difference is, people were joyriding the equipment back then: a 303 wasn't made for acid squelching, it was a bass guitar emulator. An 808 wasn't designed for making house tracks, it was a machine to replace the drummer on his days off. Now you can sit in front of a suite of plugins which are, perversely enough, emulator the emulators, but are principally designed for making dance music and nothing else. We need a new generation of kids to see the hidden use of things which are presently being used to churn out pristine replicas of the past. I'm convinced the next technological breakthrough will be far less important than the mindset which reinvents it.
