Mr. Micheal Roggue, thank you so much for filming Hong Kong over the last 60 odd years. All the films are precious and should be cherished by every Hongkonger!
I was there then and have loads of photos... it was not rare to have a camera... it's the electronics capital of the world then for tourists and duty free to boot! The shop displays of stereos, electronics, appliances, jewellery, clothing was astounding and block after block, mall after mall. So unique to HK and no where in the world. The footage here may make it seem quaint but it was a pretty modern metropolis even then.
Yes, landing at n Hong Kong in 70s. Remember my first visit, from England. Thank you for this footage. Mr. Rogge. The hustle and bustle of the place. Repulse Bay. The Peak spectacular. I stayed at 434 Fortress Hill ,North Point. Block 1958. I remember going up the hill and then up stairway to fourth floor..Was built for employees of the Electric Company. Looking at the people on boats, I remember I bought one of those hats the women wore. Brought back memories.
Dunno why youtube recommended this 6 year old video to me, but it feels like : "Hey bro, do you wanna see what your home city looked like when your dad and mom were a kid?" I love my home.
Anthony Wong sadly said recently "The Hong Kong today is foreign to me, a new land...I'd rather be in Taiwan which feels just as foreign, but is at least normal."
2:08 Buses turning right from Waterloo Road into Shanghai Street, this was indeed a short-term traffic measure during 9-12/1980 just after the opening of the first phase of MTR, and gave a good time stamp for the footage
Am from Hk and 27 years old now. I really appreciated these videos. These videos are priceless and allow me to know how HK used to be. Thank you Michael.
This is so nostalgic for me. My parents moved to HK in 1975 when I was nearly 5 years old. It was meant to be a 6 month placement but we ended up staying for 14 years so I grew up out there. This is the HK of my childhood and the one I miss the most. Now long gone except for footage like this. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Milano This is what came to mind too, we drink and dance forever and a day. We live the life we choose, we fight and never lose, yes those were the days, oh yes those were the days.
What a beautiful video. It feels amazing to be able to recognise each location in this 70s video even being born in the 80s. It was such a blessing to be born in this fascinating and lively city. Thanks for preserving this valuable memory of Hong Kong.
Mike, watching this video was like time travel for me. My family immigrated to the US in 1975 when I was twelve years old, so this is how I recall everything as I left it before to old buildings were torn down to make way for the new. Thank you for the visual journey!
Really enjoyed watching, many thanks. I'm from the UK but my father worked in Africa and the Middle East, and when I was very young I was out there too. We went to Hong Kong in about 1977/78 before heading back to the UK. I was only three and as you can imagine have very little memory, but those fishing boats with people living on them seem familiar.
I was less than 10 years old, brought up in a village where there were countless fields growing all kinds of crops. As the HK began to boom in the 80s, many things vanished over years. Now it's only buildings everywhere. Watching your video, brings back tons of memories. Yes, those were the good old days. To this day, never thought we are fighting hard for our democracy, our kids are dying everyday in battles against the evil Gov't. Such a big contrast to the harmony in the past. Anyone who is watching this video at this moment , please pay attention to what is going on in HK and support us in any ways. Let our voices be heard. Together we stand.
I visited in 2017. I stayed at the Cordis Hotel. I loved the hotel and loved every minute of my time in Hong Kong. I was born in '72 and as a child I saw Hong Kong on television and promised myself that I would visit. I would recommend it to anyone. I would love to go back one day. Great video, keep up the good work. From a fan in Wigan, England.😊👍
It 's either in 1978 or 1979. At 7:23, we can see the development site of Aberdeen Centre, which was constructed between 1978 and 1979. I think most probably 1978.
At 10:33, the cylinder-shape building is Hopewell Centre, its construction completed in 1980. At 10:45, left hand side, you can see the Old Hong Kong Club, a colonial style building demolished in June 1981. So this film was between 1980-mid 1981. Mike, you witnessed the last days of this famous old building.
Yes, to further reinforce the dates, the Prince of Wales building is featured on the waterfront at Tamar, which was the British Forces Far East HQ and is now the PLA headquarters, and was completed in 1979. Thank you for sharing this.
MichaelRogge 9:24 The old Hongkong Shanghai Bank Building is still there, The current building construction started in 1983. 10:13 caught a glimpse of the Prince of Wales Building in Timar Naval Base at Harcourt Road which was completed in 1979. So the film should be taken around 1979-1983.

Hello, Michael, thanks for the clip. From one shoot of Mongkok of Kowloon area, I noticed there are MTR exit, so I gussed the series of clip should be recorded around 1979 - 1980.

Our family left in 1977. In the video, Exchange Square is not constructed, you can spot the Prince of Wales building and Hopewell Centre whether it was completed or not, Repulse Bay features can give us a hint which year it was.
Been to HK ten or eleven times over the years and miss the vitality of the place. Loved the Star ferry ride across the Bay and staying at the Y. Great food too. And flying into the Kowloon airport past apartment blocks was a thrill. Thanks Michael for uploading.

I left Hong Kong to Canada at 1980. In your video, is the Hong Kong I know. When I went back to Hong Kong in year 2000 for a week or two to visit, Hong Kong is a different city than I remember it.

Dear Michael, I just want to say that your video's are fantastic. You may have been ask this before, but have you ever considered writing a book about your life and travels? Thank-you
Appreciate what you're sharing, that's the only and real Hong Kong. Back to the day before handover, we all treasured and proud of where the place we lived - Hong Kong.
This is an excellent documentation. Came here as I was relishing John Le Carre's Karla Trilogy and wanted to see what Hong Kong was like in the 70s. Thank you for making this!
when i watch this, i feel like im watching a video that i took with my ex-boyfriend and it reminds me those good old days. i dont belong to 70s but i feel nostalgic.
I think the footage here was early 1980's. Hopewell Centre was completed in 1980. The MTR Central Station (Island line) air intake was still in construction. Thank you for the footage.
Fabulous collage of HongKong indeed. I realised with a shock that it was from an period after I had visited HK in the 70s. I have scant recollection of that visit but I do remember that I loved it. I was there recently and unsurprisingly it was unrecognisable. HK had completely metamorphised into a hitech city but the soul was still palpably there. You've really done a great job in not only filming the different scenes but also sharing it with us on utube. I presume that's your wife at 9.46 onwards. Thanks for the upload Michael and I will definitely check out the other vids.

RIP HK.

Firstly, thank you for sharing this, in a way, very ethereal and erudite! God, I miss HK so much, this makes me feel better for now; soon, one hopes, travel will resume. Greetings from England everyone who reads this x
What's so great about HK? it's small and crowed and the people are rude
This video is priceless, the good old days of Hong Kong were priceless as today Hong Kong is "speechLESS"...
Thanks Michael Rogge to record down such a beautiful time and sharing with us all.
I was there courtesy of the Navy in 1974.
Loved every minute of my stay and have some great memories.
I left Hong Kong to Canada at 1980. In your video, is the Hong Kong I know. When I went back to Hong Kong in year 2000 for a week or two to visit, Hong Kong is a different city than I remember it.
Happy New Year!! May you all be happy, and healthy! May you all have courage and faith to manifest the authentic self to shine the world.
Old Hong Kong make me feel sad because it’s gone!
Rare and Amazing film my dad visited Hong Kong in 1972 or 73 when he was in the navy on the USS Saratoga CVA 60 Aircraft Carrier i only wished he would have told me more about what Hong Kong was like but i guess he wasn't much of a story teller .RIP dad and old Hong Kong I sure wished i could have visited it then.
Dear Michael, I just want to say that your video's are fantastic. You may have been ask this before, but have you ever considered writing a book about your life and travels? Thank-you
I have an autobiography on internet It is in Dutch but I have an abreviated version in English wichm.home.xs4all.nl/amsterdam1.html
Appreciate what you're sharing, that's the only and real Hong Kong. Back to the day before handover, we all treasured and proud of where the place we lived - Hong Kong.
THANK YOU for sharing this video. the good old days of hk
So sad to see this now. Rip HK 2019.

GuitarTee ROBLOX police and stuffs.....
Since 1997 everything really going downhill despite the apparent glitz and glamour
35years ago, it is the time I lived in Aberdeen, what a memory!
This is an excellent documentation. Came here as I was relishing John Le Carre's Karla Trilogy and wanted to see what Hong Kong was like in the 70s. Thank you for making this!
The amount of cool in the video surpasses the total sum of cool from years 2000 - 2019.
Next video
Take a tour of Hongkong in October 2019
Wow so nostalgic of HK in 1970 when i wasn't even born yet and my wife also from Hong Kong. Epic video from the past. Great memento!
when i watch this, i feel like im watching a video that i took with my ex-boyfriend and it reminds me those good old days. i dont belong to 70s but i feel nostalgic.
I think the footage here was early 1980's. Hopewell Centre was completed in 1980. The MTR Central Station (Island line) air intake was still in construction. Thank you for the footage.
Brings back some fond memories coming from me a Old Man born in 1972 Hong Kong
Fabulous collage of HongKong indeed. I realised with a shock that it was from an period after I had visited HK in the 70s. I have scant recollection of that visit but I do remember that I loved it. I was there recently and unsurprisingly it was unrecognisable. HK had completely metamorphised into a hitech city but the soul was still palpably there. You've really done a great job in not only filming the different scenes but also sharing it with us on utube. I presume that's your wife at 9.46 onwards. Thanks for the upload Michael and I will definitely check out the other vids.
想70年代的香港生活 帶回很多往事, 但只能回味. 如無記錯 當時還有明顯的四季.
今天 香港經濟復甦 無望!!
Very nice video! A lot of memories. Thank you
Alice Pham to get back
Sure brought back a lot of memories! The plane was landing in Kai-Tak airport which has turned into some metropolis jungle now! Interesting 12 minutes clip.
