This is exactly why eBay is a no no for gold and silver. I would recommend sticking to the big name companies like apmex , provident metals. For one your metals are insured. And also they have very competitive prices. Apmex offers free shipping at the moment and provident metals has items that you can add on for free shipping. At provident metals your paying about 60 cents over spot for some silver and your metals are once again insured. I don't see a reason to buy anywhere else.
alex rodriguez it's not just eBay hate to break it to you it's state sponsored counterfeit gold and silver you just have to face... You can have a taste but someone already owns All the steak...and the gold rush is a gold bluff it's just like currency you can aquire some through hard work but that's it just a taste
A LONG time ago (silver was around $6 oz), I bought 80 bars on ebay. Paid $80 for INSURED shipping. 40 bars turned up, when I queried this the seller emailed me a receipt for $11 in postage, then never responded to another message. To cap it all off?? EVERY BAR IS A FAKE!!!
MonkofAu the problem is that most people won’t find out that they got a counterfeit. They will carry it for decades thinking that they got the real thing.
I had no idea that a 1oz bar of silver would even be worth faking? I knew about the 10oz bars & silver eagles, but a 1oz generic bar is sickening ... Don't throw the fakes away .. Educate with those fake bars or coins if you ever come across those sir. Great video & thank you for sharing sir ..
+Philip Young Agreed, this is like counterfeiting a $1 bill. It doesn't make any sense, which I suppose is exactly why they're doing it. Who would suspect?
That fake bar was brass. Had it been pure copper you probably wouldn't have noticed it was fake. Copper is only slightly lighter than silver so the small amount it must be thicker to have correct weight would probably not be noticed as they all seems a little different because of their minting. However on pure copper magnet would slide only a few % faster than on pure silver. Not something anybody would notice unless done on a lab in controlled environment with something of exact same size to compare with and with sophisticated measuring instruments. The "funny" thing is that making them of pure copper wouldn't make them that much more expensive to make as brass to begin with is most copper anyway. The zinc however alters is ability to conduct current significantly and that's why the magnet slide down fast - there's almost no eddy currents compared to pure silver or copper.
The magnet test is pretty amazing if you haven't tried it. Most of us have only ever seen magnets either stick, or not. But the weird way silver reacts with a magnet is surprising when you try it yourself. Videos just don't do it justice. I wonder though, if something that is silver plated would do the same thing.
Man I have built the ultimate mag-tester for both coins and bars. I don’t remember where I read about how to do this or I would pass the info on but you take two very powerful computer Hard Drive magnets and bolt them together making a slot between them to drop your coin or bar through. Silver passes through very slowly as fakes just drop like a rock and of course steel sticks so hard that it’s actually hard to remove it. Best mag-tester I’ve ever used! Maybe I’ll get over my cam-fear and make a vid in this. Lol
I'm new to stacking, but thanks to vids like this, I am super vigilant and will only purchase from reputable dealers, i.e., APMEX, JM and SD Bullion. Thx for sharing SK!
BTW the "slide the magnet" test you were doing is an intersting idea for a test, I like that! That effect is called "magnetic braking", look up "eddy currents" (or watch several videos here) for more information. That will unfortunately happen with a lot of non-ferrous metals. I wasn't able to quickly find a table of what metals brake better, but I believe its proportional to elecrtical conductivity. So silver, gold, *and* coper *and* aluminum will all brake well, with copper being the most popular for both braking demonstrations. (*and* coin counterfeiting) I tested a large copper (999) coin as well as an aluminum heat sink, a Morgan and Peace (900 silver 100 copper), and a Sealand (999 silver) dollar. All four braked well, including the heat sink, with very slighty better braking on the pure copper, too minor to measure reliably by my simple testing. Angle and surface texture introduce too much uncertainty.
To all those that are against buying off eBay, there are reputable dealers even on eBay. For example: SD bullion, MCM, Apmex. So eBay buying doesn't have to be risky
Thanks for the info. I actually have some silver town bars, I will have to check them. I lost a lot of faith in E Bay buying old coins. I stick with JM Bullion now.
Does led slow neodymium magnet? Why I'm asking is because it has pretty close density to silver. So why those fakers aren't using lead to fake silver bars?
Funny I literally checked my entire stash today before seeing this (took about an hour with everything). I even cut open some of my (20) sheets of bullions to check. Best thing to do is check all of them when they come in. Did all 4 Test I know. One batch worried me with noise but like you said, some cast them differently and the sound can be a little different. (1) Noise Ping (2) Magnet slide (3) Ice fast melting (4) weight.
good video, thanks for showing me how to test silver i got excited from your 1 gram bar video and bought my first silver on ebay to see what it feels like. it should be arriving today! super stocked thanks again man
I just purchased the same dam bar on eBay and will receive it in three days and I'm praying that it won't be fake and if this bar ends up to be fake then I will never buy from eBay again unless it junk silver coins. Thank you for the heads upn
Test it for sure! It is most likely real though. I order silver from eBay all the time and this is the ONLY fake silver that I have encountered. Thanks for watching!
You have to pick up the bar and put tip of your finger and tap it at the edge of the bar. You can’t tell like that, copper also does the same thing when you use an earth magnet.
I just bought 6 oz identical bars today. Reputable dealer. New to this. Next to stagecoach does sound a little different but the stagecoach is scored in 1/4 oz. I do not know enough to do an acid test. I bought 2 10 oz bars along with other. Any suggestions? Thank you
Where did you buy the fake bar? It's good and to know and share with others so people could avoid those sellers, I usually put the silver in small baggies and I write the name of seller so if ever my coin turns out to be a fake I know exactly who sold it to me.
I didn't even think that faking one oz bars was profitable. I'm glad you learned an important lesson and you are willing to educate others though. Sorry you got burned.
Daniel Bull Runner Lamb yeah i think he is legit becuse he sells the 1 oz year of the dog lunar coin that just came out and it usually takes over a year for some one to come up with a fake
lesson number one never buy precious metals such as gold or silver from eBay always buy from trusted dealer like jm bullion or silver. com you pay little extra but you know you getting real stuff and all grams.
Lay 2 silver bars of the same weight (1 genuine bar & 1 under test) on the kitchen counter top and do the ice test. The ice should melt rapidly and in the same time. Bars having the ssme weight and area dimensions but different thickness are suspect.Compare to a genuine bar.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m just now starting I’m buying 2 pieces every two weeks after payday, 3 American Eagles to every 2 Maple Leaf coins, additionally I’ve purchased two one oz silver pour billions all from a Local Coin Shop. Is this a pretty good practice? Soon I’ll be buying online from one of the big companies but I uncomfortable buying from EBay. Any suggestions?
What acid are you using? I thought the nitric acid/muriatic acid chemical is supposed to be a red brown if it is actually silver. It's supposed to turn a blue or turquoise color if fake.
Thanks for the heads up. I mostly buy from the big dealers, but I still test everything I receive...even the rounds. So far, no fakes detected. The specific gravity test several people have demonstrated is non-destructive. In combination with the magnet and weight test, you should be fairly confident of legitimacy. To be sure, only destructive tests will prove it real. Check salivate metal's vid on his testing.
Not just a eBay problem. My buddy bought a fake 2013 panda from his LCS, sent me a pic saying he was all excited and I immediately noticed it was a fake. A LCS owner here picked up 200ozs of rounds from the local PM dealer and found a fake in one of the tubes. That same LCS owner also bought a 5oz silver plated cooper round from a customer. If you educate yourself like I have you will never buy fakes unless it's on purpose. I've notified tons of eBay sellers they were selling fakes and most were big sellers that had no idea. I've only ever bought two fakes and that was on purpose because a guy had a lot of 12 rounds listed and he had 2 rare 1986 Engelhard Everest rounds in that lot that I wanted real bad so I won the lot, returned the two fakes for a refund and sold the two everest rounds on eBay for $115 buy it now and $68 at auction so I ended up with 8ozs I paid like $30 for after it was all said & done.
Just purchased multiple Silver T. Bars. 1oz. To the 10oz. Any many. Was from BGASC. Do these large volume dealers test before selling? I'd like to know. What's cheapest way to test? Where to get rare earth magnet?
Thank you This was very scary to me . I have the same bar from the silvertowne mint as shown in the video. I had problems over the past few years with there coins as well. Never would I thought they would issue fakes.. I did not know if you purchased the coin directly from Silvertowne.. Thanks for the warning T C
I'm in the UK and did the same soon after starting to stack 5 years ago. i.e, inexperienced. I bought 10 of those off Ebay but luckily spotted they were too thick, filed one edge which showed brass and got refunded. Lesson learnt! Legit bullion dealers only now for me.
I would love to buy the "fakes" for my 10 year old nephew who would DIE to have "silver/gold" bars or what ever to add to his collection. I would of course tell him they are counterfeit/ fake but he would still love them.
WOW! I'm so glad I ran across your video before I bought from ebay from some scammer! Thank you so much for letting us know! I have a question about the acid test. If you use a drop of acid on a real silver bar, what happens? I want to buy some silver bars for the purpose of rolling them out to make jewelry, but I don't want to get ripped off. Should I or can I go directly to Silver Towne to get my silver bars?
I own an ebay store, I sell vintage books. I can see how you can get scammed on ebay. I've seen fake store fronts that even look legit. I won't buy much of anything from ebay for silver or electronics. It's good for collectibles, toys and housewares. I only buy PM from reputable mints. Thanks for posting the vid. It's good to warn people. You 20 bucks is worth more than you know to newbies.
they plate it with silver so it looks real. But the diagmanetic property of silver is unmatched, good way to find a fake. Where did you buy that fake bar? if you go to ebay and type clad gold or silver bars, you will find hundreds of them.
+VIDEOSUPERHIGHWAY Copper is even more Diamagnetic so if they filled it with pure copper and plated it with silver and tweeked the weight the world would never know. Coins are a lot harder to fake unless the dye sneeks out the mint a well trained eye is the only detector.
It's shiny. Glossy. Most real minted coins or bars have a frosty "wagon wheel" from the very high pressure dies that is very hard (not financially feasible) to replicate.
Just needs some peoples advice, which bars do you think I should purchase - smaller ones like 100-250g or bigger bars like 1000g? Which one would sell easily in a coin shop/pawn shop?
Johnson Matthey bars are real nice looking. Apmex is probably the best deals on those 1 oz. but I hate fake shit on eBay. Way too many fake stuff on there, not just silver.
keep that bar as decoy bullion. I bought a few fakes but instead of getting mad and tossing them I keep them in a less secure location so that if robbers ever looked through my house, they'd find those first and think they got an easy score
I only buy from APMEX and Provident Metals. Do I always get the lowest premiums? Nope. However, my product is real 100% of the time. I play a lot of video games and my friends would always try to save a few bucks by buying downloadable games off ebay. Some of the games they bought were hacked/stolen accounts, and when they logged into the game they'd be banned while a Chinese guy made off with their money. Over my life time I've realized across every industry....that it is better to buy from a well known reliable resource than to try and save a few bucks, because in the end the people that paid the lower premiums will wind up likely paying more than I do after they collect several ounces of fake silver.
I never buy from Amazon or Ebay craigslist ect. always buy from trusted dealer or mints keep buying the JM bars there really desirable there are a few other brands to . Google it and buy them up so you can mark them up later based on the name and quality of metal.
Too bad our country doesn't mint silver for the public to invest in unlike US, buying those investment grade bars like Johnson Matthey, coins like Silver Eagle, and rounds cost more than 2x the current spot value here, while the junk silvers (when our country used to mint silver as currency) cost 50% premium over spot due to numismatic and collector's value. And for those fake bars I saw a lot of them being sold around like a dollar or less in Alibaba like Silvertowne, Scottsdale, Northwest Territorial tagged as "commemorative", "souvernir", "silver plated" which you can customize the alloys used, which if you want it to be non-magnetic like a real silver you'll choose copper/brass. This I think is being resold by the people who bought those in China in other online shops like Ebay with misleading titles or outright lying about its composition to make a quick buck, which is a very bad and unethical way of doing business...sad panda face
Bro would u say I would ever be on risk if I buy directly from apmex , jmbullion or us mint. websites. i mean how could u end up with counterfeit like that
do you buy on eBay a lot or was this the first time? I am wanting to start collecting silver I have been looking on e Bay but not sure how to tell if it is real
If you really want to buy silver/gold, do yourself a huge favor and skip ebay altogether. "Silver Killer" has another (more recent) video where he acknowledges he bought 6 fake gold bars on ebay. Unfortunately the $20 lesson here on fake silver wasn't costly enough. There are plenty of reputable bullion dealers (APMEX and JM Bullion, to name two) where you can buy online and have a sale price directly tied to the minute-by-minute spot price. You can also be certain they're selling you the real deal. Some think they'll get lucky on an ebay auction and buy silver, etc below spot price. Their hope (and greed) is why the counterfeits get sold there. Meanwhile, you can complain to ebay the silver was fake, but the seller can claim ignorance and keep doing what they're doing...
Thx for sharing your knowledge However, ebay is sure dangerous i rather get gold n silver from an authorised retailer eventhough the prices might be higher but it worth not to get me worried
newdefsys To check the purity of silver, you can look up the links on the internet, it's easy to do. All you need is an accurate scale, a glass of water and and string.
newdefsys I am just saying a specifty gravity test is a good way to test if you have a real silver coin or a fake one. The density of silver compared to water is a ratio of about 10.9 I think, you can look it up. So if you hang a silver coin in a glass of water on a scale that has been zeroed, you should get about 3 grams. 1 oz of silver is about 31.4 grams I think, so 31.4 / 3 is about 10.9 for a real silver coin.
Nicholas Zounis Yes, the specific gravity test does deliver results. But, it's a complicated test, with variables that have to be plugged into the equation, (room for error exists). Personally, I use a 5 point test on silver, 'purchasing only through a mint licensed distributor', 'weight', 'dimension', 'ringing' and 'diamagnetic'. Also, I only buy Silver Eagles to remove variability in the testing process. (same type of coin brings consistent results which can be compared with the other coins.
I did buy a 1 oz bar from OPM directly and it did not fit in a plastic holder as well. Just an FYI. Best to leave those in the sealed plastic sleeve they send the in.
I try and stick to the main 3/4 dealers online. Supposedly, they have things they do to test. Take it for what that is worth. I still weigh and do a ping test for coins. I have an app for that one on my cell. Bars of course are harder to tell.
here's a tip: look at the corners of the bar compared to a real one. a real silver 1 oz bar has a corner that is more rounded than a fake one. this however is not true with the 10 oz bars
Why not go with Silver Eagles? They cost a little more but they are gov issued and if your caught counterfeiting those your in BIG trouble. Is the piece of mind not worth the extra cost. I mean when the USD does collapse silver is going to sky rocket...
if the US dollar collapses which it probably wont for a long long time because they just use war to keep the scam up,what currency will it sky rocket in ?
Depends if it's rare to get. I only ever bought a Silver Towne as tough to get in UK and 10z bars are rarer to be copies. Once I got mine (the moulding is rough, lot of blemishes, dull which are all good signs of real) i'll switch to a normal dealer.
Always buy from dealers like JM bullion, SD Bullion, Monarch, etc. Just buy from reputable dealers.

Subtle Name sell to coin shops.. or in person where people can’t test on site.
Never buy from eBay silver or gold
why not? just get it tested at your local shop upon receipt. if its fake paypal will always side with the buyer

I won't buy much of anything from ebay for silver or electronics. It's good for collectibles, toys and housewares. I only buy PM from reputable mints. Thanks for posting the vid. It's good to warn people. You 20 bucks is worth more than you know to newbies.
I have more than 750 Morgan's! Maybe I should nickname myself & waste my days away recording myself rambling on & on & on on the you tubes! lol;)
Tough break SILVER KILLER! I hope you ran that seller down and got a refund. That makes me feel sick!
they plate it with silver so it looks real.
Thank you for sharing. Most people never want to admit that they'd been had. I know what to look for. Thanks again.
I got 2 fake silver coins off of EBay. Got them replaced. Now I only purchase from legitimate bullion dealers on EBay.
Now I know why the 1oz silver town I got in a lot of secondary market generic from apmex was drilled into.
It's shiny. Glossy. Most real minted coins or bars have a frosty "wagon wheel" from the very high pressure dies that is very hard (not financially feasible) to replicate.
Just needs some peoples advice, which bars do you think I should purchase - smaller ones like 100-250g or bigger bars like 1000g? Which one would sell easily in a coin shop/pawn shop?
smaller ones sell easier. the large bars are harder to sell.
xYouthAttackx thank you
1 OUNCE ARE EASIER TO DISPOSE OF IN A FIAT ECONOMY IF NEED BE ....
John Swanson yep! i go high as 5 ounce but that's it. junk silver coins are probably the most easiest to sell.
I guessed which bar it was right away. Those silvertowne bars get faked so much and they're all over eBay for like 4$ for an "ounce of silver".. lol
For some reason, my eye went straight to the fake silver bar before you even started.
You might be having some strong intuitive abilities. :)
Jonathan Green I saw it too I'm like that looks cheap as fuck
agentgates that cursive lookin one
Me too. The color was far too dark from normal silver.
Now, did you buy this SilverTowne bar from the SilverTowne seller on ebay? or did another ebay seller sell that silvertowne bar to you?
Can you not buy on Ebay and test it as soon as you get it? Just return it if it's fake/report them.
How do you know if it is fake without the test?
ping test is best method because you can do it without tools and it's reliable when you know how the sound is supposed to be
Meta MGTOW The ping sound is always deeper on real silver.
Meta MGTOW Ping does not work out very well for all rounds.. case in point is the Incuse Indians.. FYI..
I recommend using an acid test. Using just sound is kind of gambling.
Meta MGTOW Just what's ping testing? Can you explain how to do it with 1 to 10 oz. Bars. Thanks.
Johnson Matthey bars are real nice looking. Apmex is probably the best deals on those 1 oz. but I hate fake shit on eBay. Way too many fake stuff on there, not just silver.
80% is fake/cheap knock off. Thats what its now.
I normally just go straight to the mint shop to buy my silver coins. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
keep that bar as decoy bullion. I bought a few fakes but instead of getting mad and tossing them I keep them in a less secure location so that if robbers ever looked through my house, they'd find those first and think they got an easy score
You can avoid this by buying directly from the company at better prices and free shipping
What is that magnet? And where did you get it?
Neodymium.
J M Thanks for reliable sources.
Meanwhile, you can complain to ebay the silver was fake, but the seller can claim ignorance and keep doing what they're doing...
by the gold he said a reputable dealer
both apmex and jm bullion sell on ebay
and sometimes they have better deals on ebay than on their own site
do you use capsules to store you bullion????
kacper martyniak i would recommend if your willing to pay the price for the capsules
Thx for sharing your knowledge
However, ebay is sure dangerous i rather get gold n silver from an authorised retailer eventhough the prices might be higher but it worth not to get me worried
You can also do a specific gravity test.
+Nicholas Zounis For what purpose?
newdefsys To check the purity of silver, you can look up the links on the internet, it's easy to do. All you need is an accurate scale, a glass of water and and string.
Nicholas Zounis The purity is obviously zero. No need for continued testing.
newdefsys I am just saying a specifty gravity test is a good way to test if you have a real silver coin or a fake one.
There is a new non-contact magnet test for silver. It might help detect these fakes.
The first thing I noticed was the scale of the design is smaller than the real ones
1 ounce = 28.35 grams so why do they weight 31-32g?
Troy ounce = 31.1g
ok
rest could be impurities.
It's 99% silver.
Awesome video Bubba. You got a subscribe from me. I'm thinking of getting into it all and I'm doing my research.
if you guys need advice for scales and safe box let me know
Congrats on 1k subs.. found this in the trending section
Why do you put the 1 oz bars in cases.......makes no sense to me as the value is in the weight and its not like a rare coin.
very nice bars silver killa
as always keep on stacking cheap silver
I did buy a 1 oz bar from OPM directly and it did not fit in a plastic holder as well. Just an FYI. Best to leave those in the sealed plastic sleeve they send the in.
Frame and hang it up as a lesson learned - never forget!
the magnet test is worthless because a regular no silver quarter will pass as silver in the magnet
Never buy from private dealers on eBay. Go for reputable Bullion dealers that sell on eBay like Apmex
I try and stick to the main 3/4 dealers online. Supposedly, they have things they do to test. Take it for what that is worth. I still weigh and do a ping test for coins. I have an app for that one on my cell. Bars of course are harder to tell.
How the hell did I just stumble upon a 4 year old video by a sub-1k account?
here's a tip: look at the corners of the bar compared to a real one. a real silver 1 oz bar has a corner that is more rounded than a fake one. this however is not true with the 10 oz bars
Tomas Zanella most people won’t know what is “more rounded”
No need to bother you, but I'd handle my bars a bit lighter just to prevent scratches.
Great set of bars ;)
Why not go with Silver Eagles? They cost a little more but they are gov issued and if your caught counterfeiting those your in BIG trouble. Is the piece of mind not worth the extra cost. I mean when the USD does collapse silver is going to sky rocket...
if the US dollar collapses which it probably wont for a long long time because they just use war to keep the scam up,what currency will it sky rocket in ?
Xam Takorian the Chinese fake silver eagles by the millions...your no safer ....buy from a reputable dealer...not ebay
That looked fake right from the get go. Does it even have a mint mark?
Thank you for the insight friend.
What person in there right mind would buy silver or gold off ebay? Pay a little extra and buy from a reputable dealer sd bullion,Jm bullion.
Depends if it's rare to get. I only ever bought a Silver Towne as tough to get in UK and 10z bars are rarer to be copies. Once I got mine (the moulding is rough, lot of blemishes, dull which are all good signs of real) i'll switch to a normal dealer.
Fuck ebay. Face to face purchases is all I would ever think of doing.
