    Hi Paul ,a nice simple video which I enjoyed.Having a 15 Broadland made as I text that I’m looking forward to.I was going to say ,when I saw the bridge at the end,that it would of been nice to have seen your wife ,then she appeared,baby in a sling with a big smiling face .I’m sure the river can be challenging at times .Be safe .Kevinrpointer

      Definitely a bit rusty, hadn't touched any white water in over a year. But, it's a good excuse to keep visiting to get my skills up.

    Fantastic! Sure enjoy being subscribed to your channel and taking in all the sights and sounds of your corner of the world. Looks like you are right into spring, where things here in Nova Scotia are slow in budding. Just gorgeous out on that water! Thanks for letting me tag along and hope you are looking forward to a great weekend!

    Hi, i am totally new to this and so excited. Can you advise me as to what sort of canoe i should go for as a first timer and also i love the idea of being able to attach a sail. I have looked at the Firefly and it appears to let a bit of water on board from splash to the front end end. I had initially started out looking ay kayaks, but this just appeals even more. Have subscribed and will look at more of your videos. If possible to chat some time even better, but understand if not.

      I'm really sorry for not replying sooner, It completely passed me by! you've probably got one now😂 but it really depends on what you are using it for? I've never paddled the firefly but I reckon it will feel a bit unstable if your new to paddling, great for some white water fun, but a bit small for tripping.

      @@WhenNaturePauls haha. yes i have a new novacraft prospector 15, it's fantastic, but quite heavy. Apologies for my message was a little difficult to understand, but i have got the canoe i wanted and cant wait to do my first river trip, just a bit afraid of the solo camping bit, but i will do a Dartmoor trip as it's on my doorstep and get used to solo camping. thanks for taking the time to reply.

      It's a superb river! Can canoe 135km of it all the way from the cairngorms out to the sea. Aim is to take my camping equipment and complete it over 4 days at some point.

    Hiya Paul, welcome to Scotland. I enjoyed that video just back from a 4 day trip from Kingussie to Spey Bay. some fantastic camping spots and wildlife to see, particularly liked the common sandpipers and ospreys and I love the sand martins. I am in the process of replacing my canoe at the moment (not as a direct consequence of last month's trip!) and am going to opt for a 16 or 15 duralite SB broadlands. Hope you don't mind me asking but how's the bow sailing seat for solo paddling (I am assuming you're half perched on that while kneeling?). In general i take it you're happy with the boat? Going to have a look at your other videos, if you make it to the Outer Hebrides sometime (great inter-loch paddling) feel free to get in touch for any pointers or a pint. cheers for now, keep up the good work, Roddy

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Roddy, thanks for the comments and thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
      I'm planning on doing a multi day trip down the spey myself (probably in the Autumn now) did you go solo?
      I went for the 15 as I wanted to do mostly solo paddling and carry kit, although I will be tandeming at some point, but they also do a high line version of both the 15 and 16 to make the decision even harder 😂
      I'm hoping to take the canoe out without kit and dog to try the sail in stronger winds soon. But, the setup seems to be working well, it seems every configuration is a bit of a compromise if you want to do everything and it may well change with experience but felt good so far. I generally use the seat and drop to knees for the faster stuff (I'm quite happy/comfortable without a kneeling thwart, in fact I prefer it) but I did find myself occasionally inching forward on the sailing seat (half perched) when soloing with the canoe pointing backwards.
      But yes I'm we'll happy with the canoe so far.
      Thanks for the invite me and the wife plan on walking the outer hebrides at some point, they look amazing!
      Hope that answered your questions, don't hesitate to ask if there is something else (or I've misunderstood).
      Cheers, Paul.

    A very good day to you Paul, thanks for the great video. this beautiful river is on my to do list for sure. One thing i wanted to ask, I have a new Broadland 15 too, and am about to fit her out etc. please could I ask what your measurements were for the lacing of the boat> did you use 5mm cord and what diameter tubing? Also, what is the jacket you are wearing? Many thanks Matthew

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day and thanks.
      Silverbirch laced it up for me. I was going to lace it myself, but they offered it for free. Anyway, I've just measured it for you: the first hole starts 165mm from bow and stern, then the holes start of 80mm apart and about 20 holes in it reduces to 75mm 🤷🏻‍♂️. They start off 10mm down from the gunwhales then towards the middle reduce to 5mm down 🤷🏻‍♂️ (I would of probably just started in middle and gone 80mm and 10mm down throughout). They've used 4mm cord and 6mm tubing.
      Happy to help, if there is anything else or you need me to be more specific or clarify anything, just let me know.
      All the best and good luck, Paul.

      The jacket I'm wearing is just my normal walking jacket by Jack wolfskin. I am in the market for a new cag, but haven't made a decision yet.
      Cheers for watching, no doubt I'll cover the rest of the Spey in future videos.

    Hi Paul,
    Can I ask how long did it take you to canoe from Cragganmore to Aberlour? Going out on first long trip down a river next week and we've given ourselves 3 days. Aviemore - Grantown, Grantown - Aberlour, Aberlour - Spey Bay. Doing it in touring kayaks though.
    It's roughly 20 miles a days (give or take) but we're unsure of how long it will actually take. We're not in any real rush and the days are long so it's not an issue. Just wondering on the actual time it will take as can't find any info online.
    Thanks man!

      Hi Cameron,
      Sounds like a good plan to me!
      I think it took me about 4 hours.
      I have a book 'river Spey canoe guide' that suggests the same trip you've planned for a three day trip. It also has a couple of longer three day trip options. I'm hoping to do the whole thing myself this year in the Autumn.
      Good luck! Don't hesitate to a ask if I can be of any more help.
      Cheers, Paul.
