    I have loved this song from it came out, in 1969 if memory serves. A powerful song with an equally powerful message. I just love it and listen to my " old school " songs on a regular basis. Great reaction, i must look up the reggae version, thanks👍

  • @John_Chu

    Thanks Harri for the great reaction. There's a little more backstory that I discovered just recently. Spector was inspired to write this (the lyrics are by Toni Wine & Irwin Levine) when he saw "For The Love of Ivy" a 1968 film starring Sidney Poitier and Abbey Lincoln. Poitier co-wrote the script about Ivy Moore, a maid who after nine years of service leaves to go to secretarial school. So, it was definitely about self-empowerment. Quincy Jones' score for the movie was nominated for an Oscar.

    In 2001 when hubby and I were still dating, we'd go every weekend here in Las Vegas to Arizona Charlie's, where Sonny Charles and his band would entertain all weekend. We'd dance our butts off! Then a few years later, we saw Sonny in Laughlin Nevada singing with The Steve Miller Band. We last saw him in West Vegas doing singing in a retirement community. Still as light on his feet as ever and in fine voice! Talked with him for awhile. Very nice chap. When he was at Arizona Charlie's, his band was still The Checkmates. He started singing with others when his longtime bandmate, Sweet Louie died suddenly when they were booked as entertainment on a cruise ship. Sonny has been a fixture in Vegas for decades. Thanks for featuring him Harri! 👍 ❤

    Look at the video, makes you cry too , just to see what our women went through, achieved and still be called second class. You have beauty queens, maids, scientists, astronaut, poets, first lady, business women etc represented there. Make you wonder what we could have done if we were just left alone and no treated like that.

    I have played this song over and over. It was popular when I was young. And Spector's wall of sound... dang. I love this song so much. I was 19 y/o and working with a young black man who introduced me to this song. I found it so wonderful, I wished I was black so I could claim it for myself. Good review.

    I’m from the Southside of Chicago, and I know this song because my mom has the 45 and that’s her nickname Black Pearl she was in a gang called the Duprees, in Pilsen, they also called her blacky, we are Mexican but my mom is very Dark skinned and this song just fills me with joy I almost cry sometimes listening to it, blacks and browns unite, and all others let’s continue together

    As a lifelong reggae fan I remember discovering soul originals. It can be such a shock to find out that it’s not a reggae original. I like your cultural comparison between the two genres and placing it in historical context. I particularly liked your affection for the reggae version
    Nice one ❤

    From their 1969 album, Love is All We have to Give, this was produced by Phil Spector. Inspired by the Sidney Portier's 1968 movie Love of Ivy.
    Such a great song from past. Beautiful lyrics in this song, sung with such sweetness and delivering a message of love and loss. I always loved this song.
    Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and John. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

    I love your channel and your accent Harri. Please do a reaction on “Young, Gifted and Black” by Donny Hathaway live at the Troubadour. It too is a very empowering song. I know people listen to the great Ms. Nina Simone sing it, but Donny does it with so much soul and he does it live. Please check it out for Black History Month. Thank you.

    Here's the reggae version by Horace Faith th-cam.com/video/x9rQ4eXw-NE/w-d-xo.html Got to #13 in UK in 1970. Bob and Marcia "Young, Gifted and Black" th-cam.com/video/ZV_afu1-jDw/w-d-xo.html which was #5 in the UK also in 1970.
    As far as I know The Checkmates version of "Proud Mary" th-cam.com/video/VvMGW9dLQVg/w-d-xo.html was the first to use the arrangement that Tina Turner would make an integral part of her act for ever.

    This came out at the very beginning of America making strides toward racial equality...Next came Martin Luther King and we were getting even closer, but it seems after his death we stalled out and the last few years we seem to be regressing...What a shame and an embarrassment for our country...

    • @26rickg
      @26rickg ปีที่แล้ว

      Where's the "regression"? Really, please tell me..., that's a divisive false narrative promoted to divide us by people that hate America...and you've got the timeline wrong on this record too. MLK was assassinated in '68. .. this record came out in summer of '69.....The
      "embarrassment" is the people that fall for the race baiting politics.......wise up..
