    Some really useful tips in there, especially the desaturation and using the curve to make the things that need adjusting easier to see! Thanks!

      Awesome! I will keep them coming! Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment.

    Wow! Learning so many new things from you, Scott. I've always wondered about dodge and burn, although I mostly shoot landscape. Wondering how this can be used for it. Maybe you can do a video on that

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! I can probably make one for that as well. It is the same idea of course, but just a different strategy on where you would want to apply the effect. Cheers!

    Thank you scott for your very insightful technique. Im looking forward to your updated method that you have mentions in the comment section to a previous comment.
    My question though, would you recommend using PS for removing the blemishes in the skin or is there method of doing that in C1.
    Finally, lol can you do FS in C1?

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You cannot FS in C1, and I can't see them every going that direction. There is a blemish tool in C1, but it is kinda trash so I would just stick with PS for that.

    Your assumption about the difference between JPG and raw is incorrect. The big difference between the two is that JPG's are compressed. When you convert to JPG, you shed all the information that is not relevant to human perception. If you want to make changes after converting to JPG you don't have as much wiggle room anymore. RAW is also pixels. That's dictated by your camera sensor (photosites). It does however contain much more information than your monitor can display and is not optimized for how humans perceive color yet. That's the reason why your raw editor needs to know which camera you shot the photo on.

    It's like the "make grey" slider 😁. Great tuts man. Probably the best capture one tutorials on TH-cam.

    You can Dodge and burn with luminosity in Photoshop. Then you have no color Shift

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That isn't exactly true. Yes, you will be able to make things lighter and darker, but when you lighten a dark area, it has less saturation and will shift regardless. Same for lighter areas that will become overly saturated. This because of how light works, and nothing fixes it in one pass. I normally also do a saturation correction afterwards to fix this.

    Scott, thanks so much for sharing this. The results look very good from just a small amount of work, I'm definitely going to give this a try. Do you also use the luma range technique for D&B?

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not usually, as i try and Dodge and burn in the same pass. But you might be able to save a bit of time. Worth trying!

    Why would you edit a jpg in Ps. if you're going to print? And, why not edit in Adobe's raw DNG? Plus, I thought this was a Capture one video. C1 doesn't need Lr, CR, or Ps.

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This entire video is in Capture One and we never go to Lightroom or Photoshop. It is showing a dodge and burn technique on a sample image, which really doesn't matter if it is a jpg or a RAW, since this is just showing the method.

    • @romiemiller7876
      @romiemiller7876 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sedetweiler Well, you were talking all about Camera Raw and Photoshop.

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@romiemiller7876 because this operation is less clunky in Photoshop, which is where I prefer to do it. I never use Camera RAW, that is what C1 replaces.

    Hi! question: how do you dodge and burn out the pink splotch?

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can just paint in a lower saturation over that area. Not so much a dodge and burn as a color correction on another layer.

    Thank you for your time and eforts to increase our knowledge. Even I am a beginer, I am sure that a RAW procesor is the right place for dodging and burning. Instead of going step up and one down with exposure in layers, why you didn't do it with luma curve? What do you find to be more beneficial with exposure +/- 1 ?

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have found that I prefer a consistant operation here, so the quick and easy way is the exposure. I am sure you could do it with a curve (how I do it in PS), but I am kinda channeling the inner HDR mentality here I think by keeping it to even stops.

  • @logang865

    So if I understand you correctly hen I finish my editing in either Lightroom or capture one and I select “open image in photoshop” the file that is in photoshop is not the raw image? I know when I save my changes in photoshop the image is saved as a .tiff file but is that still a pixel manipulation? I just discovered your channel and already I am learning a bunch, but this video in particular left me with some technical questions.

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. The RAW converter, be it C1 or Lightroom reads the image data and you can do some high level editing directly with it. But, once you leave that converter, you are now dealing with the final image that resulted from that editor. Photoshop isn't a RAW converter, it is an image editor.

    • @logang865
      @logang865 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Detweiler thank you the clarification. I look forward to learning more in your future videos.

    What kind of tablet are you using?

    • @sedetweiler

      Medium Wacom pro. But I don't use the buttons, so a Wacom bamboo would work just fine for me if I ever need to replace it. Cheers!

    As usual Scott thank you for these tutorials. How much do you do in capture one before going into Photoshop? What processes would those be if beyond this dodge and burn tutorial?

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do exposure correction first and D&B in special situations. I then head to PD and back to C1 for color grading and the final export.

    You’re not obliged to go into Photoshop with a JPG (8 bit). I more or less stopped listening at that point.

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps I worded that poorly. In the end, the output of an 8bit jpeg is the goal. You can go into Photoshop with much more (i use a 16bit depth), but at the end of the day, we all generate 8bit jpgs if we are going to print or display them online.

    Did you sign up for my retouching class to capture one? The concept of the way you edit is unconventional. Similar to my class. haha, I just thought I'd ask. It's really cool how much you can actually do if you give Capture one a chance and break down how color and light works.

    • @sedetweiler
      @sedetweiler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I didn't know you had one! :-) This is the same technique I use in Photoshop, but I just bent it a bit for C1.

      Scott Detweiler yeah it’s on my private website. I’m trying to build up everything I’ve learned through the years and teach my concepts which are a bit unique to the way of TH-cam. I started developing techniques when I decided I didn’t want the look of photoshopped skin. Go to my Facebook and you’ll see my workshop pinned to the top.
